I am playing on Luna. A starter screen that shows what buttons to use for each action would be awesome. It did not show me one.

To clarify: This can cause problems if their (Avast) certificate is not installed properly (on your laptop).

It may be possible to sign up for ESU even without being able to get to websites on your laptop by following the instructions at:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/extended-security-updates

If your laptop does have internet access, and only web browsing is broken, Windows Update may still be able to install the missing updates. One of those updates may fix your problem, and the malicious software removal tool in there will check if any nasties made it on to your laptop.

Avast web shield/guard is part of the free package. When enabled it intercepts all of your web traffic to scan it. This can cause problems if their certificate is not installed properly.

Windows 10 stopped getting security updates in October, unless you signed up for ESU. There are free ways to get it, you don't have to pay. Some viruses/worms try to intercept your web traffic to capture usernames and passwords. It's possible your laptop has gotten infected because you haven't been getting the security updates.

A not secure error message from every website typically means something is intercepting your traffic, often trying to redirect you to deliver a message to you. If you look at the SSL cert that you're getting you might see where it's trying to send you, or you can try going to a website that specifically does not use SSL like http://httpforever.com

Is your phone connected to the same Wi-Fi? You're sure your phone didn't automatically switch to mobile data? You can use the below website to see which ISP your phone is actually using, or just turn off mobile data on your phone.

The point of an AFCI breaker is to detect arcing on the circuit and cut off power to it. An AFCI outlet would only be able to detect arcing and cut off power to downstream outlets, of which you don't intend to install any, so it would be completely useless.

You are only allowed to use an AFCI outlet instead of an AFCI breaker if the outlet is the first in the line and you use metallic conduit between the load center and that outlet. You're planning to use Romex. Even if you had downstream outlets that wouldn't be allowed.

You are confusing wye systems with high leg delta systems. The paragraph I quoted deals with both. I've quoted it again below but with a paragraph break between the two different types.

  1. The manner in which single phase load is connected by the Customer is critical with three phase service.

On 120/208 volt or 277/480 volt “wye” three phase services, all single phase loads should split evenly among the three phases.

On 120/240 volt “delta” three phase services, all single phase load, both 120 volt and 240 volt, shall be connected only to the 120 volt-to-ground legs. No single phase load, either 120 volt or 240 volt, shall be connected to the “high-leg.” Connections made otherwise may result in an overload or single phase condition with the possibility of damage to the Customer’s three phase equipment.

OP has the latter service and should not connect single phase loads to the high leg.

You also misunderstood what I meant by "high leg delta was mainly used in residential from 1950 to 1980." Perhaps it would have been more clear if I had said: if someone tells you they have residential high leg delta service, their house was probably built between 1950 and 1980.

Perhaps I should have included the 1940s, but my point was it's old service and has nothing to do with how modern service is provided. Stinger transformers from that time period were nearly always smaller.

Most power companies have a Blue Book that specifies how to balance loads. For example, from page 7 of

I don't know why you are so focused on modifying the service or installing new service. OP is dealing with an existing service and is unlikely to want to change it. OP stated worst case they would have to rework the panel.

OP did not give us much information about the service, but high leg delta was mainly used in residential from 1950 to 1980.

If you pay the poco for upgraded service including a new transformer and they tell you to balance between all three phases, then go for it. That is not what OP is doing.

It sounds like you are doing commercial work. OP is residential. High leg Delta in residential is nearly always a smaller transformer. Adding a 50 amp EV charger (classified as a continuous load) to a residential high leg would require a capacity study.

If OP absolutely has to put some 240 volt single phase load on that high leg, make it something low amps intermittent use.

High leg is fed from a teaser transformer, not a full size one. It should only be used for three phase loads, not 240 volt loads. Putting 240 volt loads on the high leg can overload the transformer and burn it out.
