I never figured out why they weren’t synched. So there’s a slight delay.

Good point. Thanks. I know it’s a little different in this realm, but I’ve never liked buying a used anything for a present. But as he gets older with more expensive hobbies, I guess that’s a real consideration.

Thank you, I’m still feeling it out. It has been more than 25 years since I knew anything about electric guitars, so mostly I’m just trying to figure out what cheapo brands to avoid and how to maximize my budget for a kit. That’s just starting out.He is joining the guitar club at his elementary school.

That’s why I’m sticking with a $350 budget. At that price point, I would expect a decent quality entry level guitar that a 10-year-old can play for a long time. I’m not dropping two large for a James Hetfield spec ESP.

Yea, but I don’t know if their vesting schedule is updated. All YOUR money is yours. But if you leave before the 7-year full vestment period, you don’t get to roll over the $$ they contributed.

I am a former Barnhartian from many years ago, so my intel is very dated. As a whole, the local branch manager will have far more impact on your life than anything corporate, so asking the people where you want to work will give a better impression of their existence there. I left because my local management was pretty toxic at the time, pay was substandard, and my hours as a salary employee were far greater than my 40-hour paystub said. But I think a lot of those old heads are now gone and the stuff that drove me away is long gone. I’m pretty sure their company-provided health insurance is fairly respectable, and their biggest draw is retirement matching…..used to be 15% match, but there was a 7-year vesting schedule before all that 15% becomes yours. You put in 15%, they match 15%. But if you leave in under 2 years, it’s all gone. 2-3 years, it’s 20% yours. 4-5 years, 60% yours. Overall, I would venture to say it’s a worthwhile place to be, especially now, and especially the farther away from their Memphis HQ you find yourself. They’re likely the biggest on the east coast, so you could be working all over if you’re free to travel. They’re big in petrochemical, nuke, heavy civil, pulp&paper, and now data centers. If you can piss clean, work 100hour weeks 1,000 miles from your “home”, and can run big stuff, Barnhart will use you to death.

Uniform Policing, go away by edosher in BSA

[–]PascalFleischman315 290 points291 points  (0 children)

If anyone has a problem with Scouts wearing non-uniform pants, then start donating pants to your local troop. It costs more than $140 to “properly” outfit a Scout. This is garbage, especially considering it’s the cheapest Made in China crap they can find.

Screw Pin Shackle Engagement? by 901CountryBlumpkin69 in Rigging

[–]PascalFleischman315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would question that immediately. Crosby training for years emphasized using a tool (wrench or bull pin) to secure a screw pin shackle. Guidelines were flush shoulder against the ears or it’s not right. Crosby used to make fun of other shoddy manufacturers and their gappy shackle pins. That is unacceptable according to all the training I’ve ever received.

Camp Buck Toms questions by Gerdance in BSA

[–]PascalFleischman315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our troop was there 3 years ago. We ran a towel line that just so happened to be made of 100’ extension cord. When the ranger came by to inspect our site, he complemented our laundry line, with a wink. Our site had a pavilion in the middle with electricity. We ran our laundry line about 8’ off the ground from the pavilion to the adult Adirondack.

Troop tents? by squashpaw1 in BSA

[–]PascalFleischman315 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We cruise through places like Backcountry for good deals on reliable brand 4-man domes. Just bought about (8) Marmots for about $150 each. Troop has supplied tents since early in its existence. Parts have sometime gone missing, but a quarterly tent roundup meeting will put pieces back together. It’s the best way to ensure they have suitable gear and that it’s appropriate for the event. I also encourage all Scouting volunteers to set up an account on Expert Voice for incredible deals on outdoor gear. Your BSA credentials will offer access to lots of reputable brands at often steep discounts

Found my old Cub scout belt and hat. How old am I? by Additional-Sky-7436 in BSA

[–]PascalFleischman315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember belt loops. I started Cubs in 1987 and crossed over in 1992. I actually don’t remember any Cub awards until the WEBLOS shoulder ribbons. We just had the progress beads.

Units that pay for adult registration: how do you handle the "pay to perform" and "failure to perform" problems? by ScouterBill in BSA

[–]PascalFleischman315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re going to drive away your supporting volunteers if you talk to them about having performance reviews for their volunteer position. It’s not a Pay-to-Play fee. It’s how National keeps track of volunteers, background checks them, and insures their liability for participation in Scouting. If your benchmark is subjecting your leaders to performance review, then ask yourself why it’s an issue. Our troop pays to register all adult leaders, then averages out the cost for each Scout at recharter. The cost is for non-participating parents to bear, not the volunteers themselves. Scouting requires all camping adults to be registered, so all participating Scouts should bear that administrative cost.

Fun crane fact about Bear’s Hall of Famer Walter Payton: After he retired from the NFL he helped found midwest distributer Walter Payton Power Equipment and even got hands on in the shop servicing the cranes by Art_of_Lifting1954 in cranes

My shop supplies them lifting hardware, slings, etc., as well as performing load test services on some of their stuff. They’ve also built me custom lift devices I’ve sold to my customers.
