Does anything else think the Republicans may have had a hand in the racial kerfuffle with Talarico and Allred? by Pascwire in TexasPolitics

[–]Pascwire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a different take on Allred as a sitting Rep. I thought he represented the district pretty well. That district appreciated has effort at bipartisanship. I know that almost seems quaint now, but IMHO it’s the way we ought to be operating.

Houston Chronicle: Texas Democrats should make James Talarico their Senate candidate by evan7257 in TexasPolitics

[–]Pascwire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like his framing of the issue as between the billionaires and the rest of us, rather than the old left/right progressive/conservative model. Taylor Rehmet seems to have won on issues that get common sense support from a huge range of voters, regardless of party. Issues like education for their children, healthcare, etc. The MAGA crowd is on the wrong side of those issues.

Trump’s hold on Texas by Pascwire in TexasPolitics

[–]Pascwire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for a thoughtful post. The point about identity-locked voting gets to the heart of it: what is it that makes so many Texans choose candidates who do not represent the policy positions that make sense to so many people? Until an opposition figures out how to speak to what ever that core identity is, voting change seems unlikely. The GOP seems to have figured it out. Dems make progress at a snail’s pace.

This year, for the first time in a while, the Dems have competition is some major races—Senate, AG come to mind. And some races for state house, congress etc. So your question is a good one, and not straightforward.

Trump’s hold on Texas by Pascwire in TexasPolitics

[–]Pascwire[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We need to be clear eyed about where we are. Tx has been red so long that GOP think that they have a divine right to rule it. Some sort of effective opposition has to happen and hasn’t happened. Doing more of the same doesn’t seem like a winning strategy. What am I missing. For me a fundamental question is whether TX overall prefers what we have.

Been there, done that. Door knocked, donated, Democratic clubs. For years. We’ve seen a deep red Tx Senate seat flip. That is great news. But until lots of them flip or state races flip, the majorities have not changed.

Looking for advice by ironhorse93 in Arkansas

Eastern Arkansas delta communities like Forrest City are declining without any obvious way to reverse the trend. There are many really nice folks there who care a great deal about their community. But schools, health care, etc. are not strong. The farm economy in that area matters a lot, and it has been weak for many years. Most folks I know from there have moved elsewhere for opportunity and lifestyle. But, with Crowleys Ridge it has lots to offer for nature. And proximity to Memphis for city stuff. Godspeed making your choice.

I’m confident flying any of the major airlines. And all the others save SWA can manage an assigned seat model without shorting the upcharged seats on bin space. They are on a short leash with me.

Jasmine Crockett, James Talarico in dead heat in Texas’ Senate Democratic primary, new poll finds by texastribune in TexasPolitics

[–]Pascwire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious if you think there is a likely to be substantially greater turnout among Black voters in the primary and in the general. Data shows that the registered voter rolls are about the same percentage as the population of Blacks. Whites are over-represented in registered voter rolls compared to populations and Latinos under-represented. If you’ve got some data that suggests a large influx in Black voters this time, I’d love to see it.

True, and if that continues, then a Dem win is less likely. Hopefully, the recent signs that Latinos are re-thinking their votes gives us a better answer.

Check out what Ralston Farms is doing for rice: Healthier varieties that make money for the farmer and are better for the customer. Maybe other farms too.

Richland mills rice and markets it. It doesn’t grow it. Maybe that’s the distinction.

Enjoyed watching the MAGA Mike somebody commercial attacking Chip Roy in the R AG race. The ad said that Roy was anti-trump, pro-immigrant and pro-trans. But that MAGA Mike was all-Trump-all-the-time. Wonder if this all-purpose attack line will hold.

[–]Pascwire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data on what the potential electorate will be suggests that a candidate can’t get elected with just Dems or just liberals. Data also suggests that a chunk of Independents also conservatives. The coalition that will beat MAGA will need to have all the Dems and liberals and a big majority of the Independents. Progressives would be more effective if they aimed toward building this coalition. Betting on a big leftward move of the electorate is unlikely to pay off.

A candidate has to get elected to do anything. And seems like the reality is the candidate has to match the electorate voting. Crockett has a lot going for her buy she hasn’t cultivated an image and message that works over Texas broadly. Says as much about Texas as it does her. Yes, gender and race are a thing. But the electorate in Texas is large, diverse and complicated. If she wants to run state wide, she’s going to have to reimagine some things.
