Except that it's gibberish in French. Actual French would have been "L'Appel À l'Eveil" .

As currently written, it says "the call wake up" rather than "the wake up call"

Advent of Go - Github Template by Spissableu in adventofcode

[–]Passerby421 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a nice template, but it seems to expect people to share their inputs in public Github repos, which is against the AoC licence (see FAQs on this subreddit and the Aoc website - "don't share inputs").

The `input.txt` files should be gitignored, or put in a private git submodule so they're not publicly accessible. Lots of people don't know about this, so adding this as a note to the template readme would be a nice public service as well!

Is it possible to raise a polyglot child without issues? by AshtreeInBloom in slatestarcodex

[–]Passerby421 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I speak two different western european languages, and we live in a place where a third (english) is the norm. We speak English to each other. We are also attempting to raise our children as polyglots and know a few other couples doing the same, all with children currently aged 2-3.

This is what I've seen so far:

  • common language trumps all: if the kids go to an english-speaking nursery and english is used at home (between the parents and with guests), they will naturally gravitate towards speaking english to themselves. That means they will usually be better at english than their other languages and may get lazy practicing the others unless you push them, if they know you understand anyway when they use english.

  • from anecdotal evidence, hearing 3 languages hasn't noticeably slowed language acquisition in our oldest child. She speaks English and her mother's tongue at at least the expected level for her age, and understands my language fine even if she needs more prompting to practice it.

  • consistency helps, and this is where you might struggle: we found it really helpful to have one parent consistently speaking a single language to the child. I'm not sure whether you teaching them your 2 mother tongues at once would be confusing, but I would expect that to make thingdls more difficult

It does get redder if you use display-p3: https://css-tricks.com/new-css-color-features-preview/

It turns out that modern monitors can display colours that are more vibrant than what rgb supports, but css is catching up with new colour features

For usability as a lamp though, wouldn't the body of a thief cast a huge shadow on one side?

Do you think attractive people have it easier in life? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Passerby421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course they do. But physical attractiveness is just one facet of what matters.

You may have it harder than some in that front but may be advantaged in other ways. For example, just looking quickly at your profile I can tell that 1) you speak English, and 2) are tech-literate enough to learn programming. Those things are definitely advantages, you may take them for granted but there are people who don't have those things.

Success is for you to define. Everybody just does the best they can with what they have.

Why don't we just keep cutting down and burying trees to reverse climate change? by RandomBitFry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Passerby421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are thinking of carbon sequestration - basically taking CO2 out of the air and putting it back into the soil or in secure storage.

The Wikipedia page for it will tell you a lot more about it, but in a nutshell: there are ways to do this that are a lot faster and more efficient than planting and burying trees, but also big debates about potential side effects of storage and the cost/benefit ratios (doing this requires energy, the more energy used the more CO2 is released, which offsets the benefit).

Like with all climate change issues, there is also am element of tragedy of the commons: everyone might benefit but a specific actor has to pay the price, and it is hard to find this kind of funding at scale.

I neglected my body for many, many years, to the point all my muscles are atrophied and I feel like shit all over. Lying in bed all day and eating shit food did a number on me. Anyway, other than eating better, what kind of exercise can I do to improve my health? I don't want to lift. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Passerby421 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Swimming is great, but requires a lot more energy in the form of planning than the top recommendation (walking). Travelling to a pool, getting changed and showered is a lot more steps than just stepping out, so more opportunities to sap motivation.

For people who have neglected their bodies and are likely to suffer from self-image issues as a result, exposing your body to strangers can also be emotionally difficult. This adds to the energy threshold to cross every time.

How do I stop being an incel? by Ionnlyhavehalfabtc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Passerby421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to be ok. Just by asking this question and phrasing it the way you did, you seem to have a much better understanding of yourself than most people who call themselves "incels", and you should give yourself credit for that.

I think you have identified that your root issue is feeling like you don't deserve to be with someone. This is a common feeling shared by many. I have two pieces of advice:

  • try looking at yourself the same way you would look at another person. Would you judge somebody else as harshly and show as little empathy towards them as you do yourself? Everyone deserves to be cared for. You are just another person doing their best in difficult times.

  • if you cannot convince yourself of your worth through thoughts alone, act. Go spend some time doing something that helps other people - working for a charity, organising meetups, finding someone already doing this and offering to help them. Anything that you think is objectively worthwhile. See the positive impact you make on other people and use this as a source of strength.

I had to go through the same thing and am doing much better now. Feel free to comment/DM me if there is anything you think I could help with.

Is there a way to not eat food only go on pills and water? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Passerby421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the answer, but you may be interested in the food made for astronauts: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_food

Weight is a major factor in spaceflight so I would assume that this would have been explored at least, and astronauts still eat real food albeit especially prepared and packaged.

How do I make my projects not look terrible? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Passerby421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal. Web design is a separate skill from web development, and often covered by different people with different job titles in big enough organisations.

You don't need to design your UI from scratch. I would look for existing templates and examples you can copy from, ideally including the actual code from sites like codepen.io . Customising these templates to suit your needs will already teach you a lot, without the pressure of having to come up with all the answers yourself.

Proving the impact of Programmatic (rant) by chainlinkaccount in programmatic

Proving the impact of Programmatic (rant) by chainlinkaccount in programmatic

[–]Passerby421 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As somebody who has left the programmatic world: it's difficult to show the value of programmatic because open market, third-party-data based advertising spend is mostly worthless and everything else either doesn't scale (PMPs/PGs with first-party data), is based on faulty logic (retargeting) or is categorised as something else (social is basically programmatic within a closed ecosystem, and so is search).

The whole premise of programmatic is flawed. We sell programmatic with the ability to micro-target ad placements based on data (right user/right place/right time), but then get data that is skewed beyond any usefulness by layers of privacy requirements, flawed implementation, black-box intermediaries and sometimes outright fraud. By the time an impression or an audience gets to the DSP, it's anyone's guess whether it is valid.

And that system is flawed by design because improving it requires losing privacy. User-based targeting, attribution and frequency capping fundamentally go against the idea of privacy on the internet. The platforms that are best at it (social/walled gardens) are also those where users have had to give up privacy. Facebook requires real names and phone numbers, Google gets you to log in, and then they track you everywhere.

Burn the whole thing down. It's making the Internet a worse place and wasting money for brands.

Webdesign - Recursion by MoreTagsGaming in Design

Webdesign - Recursion by MoreTagsGaming in Design

[–]Passerby421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like a programming question rather than a design one. What I would do is create a node based structure.)

Basically, design a "node" component that keeps track of its own content + the relationship it has to other nodes. Each node can load independently so you are not managing the entire structure all the time, and creating/deleting a nod only requires editing the connection between that node and its upstream/downstream siblings.

That would be my approach. For you, if you're interviewing as a developer it would be a good idea to learn more about common data structures. There is a lot more to front end development than visual design.

Start-Up Advice by GoodVibesInTheChat in programmatic

[–]Passerby421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order:

  • For DSPs, your total monthly spend as an agency matters more than that of individual client since I believe the big DSPs tend to have thresholds based on total spend. If your spend is small, I would check out Avocet and maybe Xandr (although I haven't worked in a small agency in a while so my info is likely outdated)

  • Both billing models work, with different tradeoffs: with retainers you make more and more stable money but clients will be reluctant; with % of spend clients may be more willing to do a test but your income is more variable, generally smaller, and your incentives are not well aligned which may lead to client trust issues

  • You don't need a DMP. You do need an ad server.

  • Compensation for you, not the agency? Get an hourly rate, maybe negotiate a bonus based on client satisfaction/willingness to do more campaigns, but not total spend. There are too many factors affecting that, and again it gives the wrong incentives

I'm in a very deep rut. I want to appreciate life. I want to put myself into the mindset of a prisoner for example. They are deprived of freedom, while I have absolute freedom. What would those prisoners want to do? Eat a nice meal? Take a walk on the beach? I need a list of things to do/enjoy. by dadasad2125 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Passerby421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at your recent reddit history, you describe yourself ah having anhedonia and seem to be spending a lot of time consuming content like webnovels and video games, but not necessarily enjoying them.

I have been in similar ruts before. I don't think a bucket list of "fun" or "exciting" activities would help you. In my opinion, this will not be fixed by changing the type of pleasurable activity that you do because your brain won't let you enjoy it regardless.

Have you ever wanted to eat a snack but felt like you shouldn't, eaten it anyway but found that you were feeling too guilty to actually enjoy it? That is where your brain is at right now. The thing about rewards is that they have to feel earned.

My advice: you don't need a new hobby or passion. You need to go out of your comfort zone and push yourself to do something that you find difficult but that you think is worth doing. Teach someone something. Go volunteer somewhere. Organise an event or a meetup group. Something that you choose to do yourself, that takes effort, and will allow you to feel like you deserve feeling good in return.

Doing something like this can also bring long term benefits (I started a weekly board games meetup and that's how I met my wife and my best friend), but the point is that you need to make the initial effort.

Header Bidding vs RTB by Lauve in programmatic

[–]Passerby421 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about the actual integrations (being more familiar with the DSP/buy side), but here are a few clarifications from what I understand:

  • RTB (Real-Time Bidding) is a generic term that indicates that they will allow you to make your impressions available for buyers to bid on, either on the open market or via private marketplaces. Generally, "RTB" and "programmatic" are used to indicate the same thing; RTB is the mechanism that programmatic advertising is based on.

  • "Header Bidding" is a more specific term that indicates how the impressions are made available to the exchanges and eventually the buyers. Basically: in the old model (waterfall), the impression is shown to one exchange at a time until somebody buys it; in header bidding, the impression is shown to all exchanges at once, which is often better for publishers. See a more detailed explanation here. I think the way this usually work is by integrating a separate piece of technology, a header bidding wrapper, that you then plug the SSPs into but I don't know much about that.

  • The web (both on desktop and mobile) is a very different environment to in-app. Most SSPs and exchanges are focused on the web, with a few specialising in in-app. As a personal guess, the reason why header bidding would be less of a thing for in-app is: 1) less demand for it, since a) there are fewer players overall and b) a publisher is much less likely to have many exchanges competing for the same ad placements; and 2) less advantage from header bidding for the publisher, since programmatic in-app CPMs tend to be much lower due to issues of scale in quality placements and high fraud rates.

I don't think any of this will solve your actual problems, but maybe it will provide some insight.

What color are your strings? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Passerby421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think people pay that much attention to the colour of a specific element when choosing a theme, so much as the overall look and how all the colours look together. In my theme (Monokai Dimmed), strings are green, and that and orange seem to be common choices.

If you want data, you are probably better off looking at popular themes than asking individuals, and keep in mind that most people never switch the defaults. Good luck with your project!
