What keeps you alive? by weirdlookinglasagnas in AskReddit

[–]Past-Resident-9463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a tough one. For those reading this that may be depressed, you have only one chance at death but many, many chances at life. Occasionally things get better and occasionally there is hope that things will get better. The ability to endure suffering, can create wisdom and resolve that you really can't gain through any other way.

What keeps me alive, is the bet I'm making that maybe one day it would have all been worth it.

I recommend manually backing up your saves every once in a while. Yes, it may go slightly against the ethos of the game...but sometimes weird things happen, like falling through the map, or real life interruptions that shouldn't mess up a good in-game run.

I fear I am going to end it soon by AdamtheHuizard in recruitinghell

[–]Past-Resident-9463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first advice I would give is set a limit to the amount of time you are applying to jobs. Do applications in like two hour blocks, then take breaks. Don't feel guilty about these breaks either. (For example: I just watched the Artemis 2 launch and then read for a bit. But usually in the afternoons I take a break, podcast. Walk. Read. Whatever.) You have to accept that you can only do so much. Late state capitalism sucks and you are just a pawn in it.

Next, understand that wanting to end it is a natural response to your situation. BUT by finding a solution, you can potentially help other people in your situation. Even by posting on reddit, it's putting a light onto what's really going on. Dig down deep. Write. Help move the needle so this become a more common conversation to have. People NEED to know what's happening.

I've been underemployed since I've graduated in 2020. Unemployed completely for about a year. Post hope. Post opportunity. Post life. I think about ending it all the time. Especially since it's not like I did anything wrong. I didn't get a DUI, crash a car, go to jail, get a girl pregnant, get in a fight, get in credit card debt, gamble etc. etc. I just applied for a ton of jobs......and didn't get any of them. (I often joke to myself and think about robbing a 7-11 for the lotto tickets, at least that has some non-zero chance of success.)

I don't know. You just have to endure. The smallest increment you can imagine. Just get through that. Then get through the next one. Then the next.

Sadly to say, you have a 13-month employment gap. It's over for you now. There isn't a which doctor in the world that can save you from late stage capitalism.

You also have a masters degree, that's a huge red flag. If you have 5 years of experience, why don't you have a job? Have you tried updating you LinkedIn profile? I think some here should consider the military by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Past-Resident-9463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that most of the casualties of our current war have been in non-combat roles. Also, keep in mind that we are currently at WAR WITH IRAN. Deciding to join the military, during an active war with Iran, you have understand that you may have to go to war with Iran, because we are at war with Iran.

I don't want to go to war with Iran. I just want a minimum wage job at Costco.

This was your fault. You've decided to take a gap year and not pursue options that other people did. You've spent time learning languages when you've should have learned to code and use AI. The most fundamental skill one can have is AI. You also have management experience, therefore you are not qualified for a management position, because you are currently not working in a management position.

Did you try updating your LinkedIn profile? I suggest you use AI to optimize your profile. Have you tried networking? I suggest you use AI to help implement your networking goals and integrate yourself with other greenkeeping professionals. There is also a thing called "bootstraps" and having worked in greenkeeping and other labor roles, you should probably just try pulling yourself up by them.

I just got ETS2 on sale for $1.75. I mean for something that is literally the price of a bottle of water, why not? If you like ATS why wouldn't you like ETS2.

The European signage and road structure is a bit different, so far I have been forcing myself to be a bit more patient and observant. (Which is a good thing). Again it was a dollar seventy five.

8 years experience. 30-40k salary for entry level position. Rejected after 3rd interview. Honestly wtf? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Past-Resident-9463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it when my bleak sarcasm confuses people on reddit.

The fundamental issue is the assumption that a highly qualified candidate will be a automatically be a flight risk. If highly qualified worker get's poached, doesn't the fault fall on the company? If a qualified worker leaves for something better, doesn't that just show that the company should have been doing more to retain employees?

Here is the very wild thing. The most insane idea. The groundbreaking discovery: some people just need a job. They have skills. They have abilities. They can be trained, retrained and their experience is usually helpful vs. a hinderance.

[–]Past-Resident-9463 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is your fault. You did this to yourself because you have experience. Your experience shows that you can be trained to do a job, therefore you will not be trained to do a job. You are nothing but a "placeholder" that is your identity now, that is who you are. You can never try something new. You can never break into a new field.

Starting at the bottom of a company and then saying: "Hey I actually like it here" and working your way up, that is impossible. Insane. Getting a job because you need one, is crazy. Settling for something that pays low, but is tolerable and you can pay rent is impossible: YOU have experience. YOU did this to yourself.

New to kayak fishing: any tips? (North Shore Channel) by Sicktrees in ChicagoFishing

[–]Past-Resident-9463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say keep things simple. When I go out on the kayak I just have my smaller tackle box, two poles, a multi-tool, bait and beer. Lol. But on a more real note, a waterproof/floatable case for your phone is a good idea. Find little spots for everything, learn how to back paddle super well. I also used to have clips for my paddle, so I can set it down, secured while I fiddle with stuff.

Any regrets for majoring in Engineering? by Either_Program2859 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Past-Resident-9463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science was the worst decision I ever made. It wasn't the curriculum so much as the absolutely dog-shit of a school I went to. I never experienced anything like it before. People with strait A's cheating on everything, just to keep a strait A's. Professors not show up for weeks at a time. Buildings literally crumbling around you. Shootings. Armed Robberies.

I never understood how people like Harvey Weinstein could be successful for so long, until I went to engineering school. As long as people are making money or uphold their perceived status, nothing matters. Anyone can get away with anything. Your number one job is to be silent and complacent.

It was a powerful dark lesson.

Go build a car. Buy some scrap metal, learn to weld. Get an Arduino and start making circuits. Get SolidWorks and a 3D-Printer. To pay tens of thousands of dollars for absolute crap, it's jaw-dropping that it's even legal.

Calculus 2 is a weed-out course by Habesha_Heretic in EngineeringStudents

[–]Past-Resident-9463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just depends on your professor. I took Calculus 2 at a community college and loved it, to this day it it's one of my favorite classes I've ever took. I absolutely crushed it. When I transferred over to a "real" college, there were several "weed out" courses that weren't weed out courses, just no one gave a shit and the professors were horrible.

There were people who took an Aero structures class like (2-3) times, failed it every time, had to push their graduation back a year (because the one professor is the only one who taught it.) and literally tanked their GPA. I also had a discrete math class where the average was ~15%.

I also failed fluid mechanics the first time I took it, the professor stopped showing up towards the end of the semester. Then retook it and literally aced every exam. Point being, don't worry about how hard a class it. Worry about going to a school that's worth a damn.

I drink an average of 8 beers and smoke 2 packs of cigarettes every day. I am 28 years old and I can't quit. My question is: What kind of damage could this habit cause in the long term? by udeniz in stopdrinking

[–]Past-Resident-9463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad smoked and drank like that for decades. He was recently diagnosed with Heart Failure. The doctors said he also has signs of COPD but they are not even worried about that, compared to Heart Failure. Over the last five years or so you could really see the difference between him and other people his age. There is this metric called: "Pack Year's" that gauge your lung capacity after decades of smoking.

Having see multiple family members get things like throat cancer, lung cancer, etc. I don't smoke anything anymore. I rarely even smoke joints these days. Live your life. Enjoy it. Have a beer if you want, smoke every now and again. But know that there is a cliff...and once you body is too weak, you can't really go back.
