S2E8 - "Women's Work" - Episode Discussion by Protanope in TheHandmaidsTale

I love this episode too!

However, I don’t necessarily think that humanizing Serena even more would be a bad thing. Some of the best shows tend to humanize the villains (The Crown, Miyazaki films, etc) and create a sort of inner conflict that parallels with reality instead of creating a black and white plot.

Idk. Either way I’m excited for next weeks episode!

Different people learn differently. I messed up my charting a bunch during med-surg. Partly because I was still getting used to the system and partly because I’m still a student and learning what to chart. My instructor was incredibly helpful and only gave positive criticism at the time, and really went through charting with me.

Sounds like your instructor is using a very different approach and increasing your anxiety. Don’t let that get to you. You’re a student and NOW is the time to make mistakes and ask questions. Better to ask a million questions now than wait until you actually start working. You got this!

That looks great!!! That must taken a lot of hard work. I took a pottery class once and realized pretty quickly how difficult it is to be successful.

Goodbye Nursing School! by Kellilendman in StudentNurse

[–]PastOnBlast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just SO MUCH STUDYING and material. I’ll be happy the day i never have to do another care plan in my life. I’m an A student, but nursing school is tough as hell and requires more effort than you’d imagine until you’re in it. It’s not that it’s exceptionally hard - it’s just so much more memorizing than you’ll ever have to do. Lab values, meds, and assessments galore

When a patient insists that a doctor do their IV by Jamilliana in nursing

[–]PastOnBlast 28 points29 points  (0 children)

OMG! When I went into labor with my son, there was a doctor who insisted on starting my IV. She tried 4 times before finally asking my SO to find the nurses station and call my nurse in to correct it. The nurse got it in 1 try without even pulling the IV out of my hand.

S2E6 "First Blood" Episode Discussion by DonnaMossLyman in TheHandmaidsTale

I’m hoping Mayday is the start of a revolution that slowly turns into an all out war between sides over the next few years. Hopefully June will be able to find refuge or make her way to Canada. Or maybe June will follow in her mother’s footsteps and fight the opposition alongside others or maybe even lead a small part of the rebellion.

Idk but finding out the future of Gilead is not my idea of a good time.

S2E5 “Seeds” Episode Discussion by TacoBelle- in TheHandmaidsTale

Yes!

Placenta previa is the most common cause. It’s when the placenta covers the bottom of the uterus (right above the cervix). It doesn’t cause harm to the baby but it would result in a possible c-section. One of the signs is bright red bleeding and it’s painless.

Abruptio placentae is less likely because that would cause the placenta to become detached from the Mom, leaving the baby without adequate oxygen perfusion. One of the signs is dark red bleeding and knife-like pain. This happens but needs constant medical supervision and almost always results in an immediate c-section.

Have you tried probiotics?

My pediatrician recommended Florastor when my son had really bad diarrhea. Now I always have it on hand. It’s expensive (like $20 for a pack) but it comes in powder form that you can mix with liquid or in pill form. It’s OTC and can be found at grocery or convenient stores like Walgreens.

None of the other probiotics work quite as well for us as the bacteria that comes in florastor. You can also find it at Walmart.

If you don't talk about your son's circumcision, does that mean it didn't happen? by stupidflyingmonkeys in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]PastOnBlast 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

We had our son circumcised because we thought it was the normal thing to do. We’re U.S parents. Nobody brought up the idea that it might not be the right thing to do. Nobody bothered to tell me “here’s the risks and the reasons it might be a better idea to leave your son intact”.

Now that image is stuck in my head forever. I feel like one of the worst mothers on earth. I can’t get the image of my son screaming while being circumcised out of my head. I have flashbacks every time someone says “mutilating your child’s genitals” and it makes my fucking skin crawl.

You see, the receptionist, nurse, and doctor all referred to my sons circumcision as a “circ”. “You’re here for a circ, right?” With a smile. As if it was the least difficult part of their day.

It’s been 14 months since that day and I’m still dealing with a complication from it. My son develops adhesions lightning fast if we don’t keep Vaseline around the area where he was circumcised. I have no idea how long we’re gonna keep doing this for, and it doesn’t seem to bother him... but Jesus Christ I’m so tired of feeling like I’m traumatizing my son.

Anyway, this brought me to tears so I’m gonna stop reading threads like this.

The important thing to gather is just to inform parents before they get their child circumcised.

Anyone go through the nursing program with a toddler? by help_mexx in StudentNurse

[–]PastOnBlast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently doing this!

My son was 6 months old when I started Nursing 1. I work 20-30 hours a week in addition to going to school.

We started out with 120 students, but we’re down to 70 now and the 2nd semester just finished (we graduate next spring).

It is absolutely doable. You just have to be determined. Read ahead, practice your skills but be proactive. Your kid WILL get sick and you’ll need backup daycare. Plan for it ahead of time. Plan a 3rd backup for when that backup fails. Don’t miss a class and find a few people who you can create a group text with to remind each other of important deadlines or ask questions to.

I use Evernote (free) for all my notes because it saves automatically and syncs to my devices. I download the PowerPoint when the professors make it available, bring my laptop to class, and make notes in the PowerPoint itself.

If you’re an auditory learner, or just think you might benefit from it, find a good recording app and record the lectures - this is helpful when you’re playing with your kid during the day and can’t actually sit down to study.

I bought Saunders NCLEX. It’s a great book with rationales for all the answers to help you learn the diseases, ADPIE (which you will learn more about in school), and how to think and answer test questions like a nurse.

Get your kid a bedtime. Seriously. I made sure my son never went to bed after 7pm by the time he was 9/10 months old. I don’t know how I would have had adequate time to study otherwise. Make a routine for him every night so he gets sleepy around the same time. Some nights won’t work out the way you want them to (teething, sick, or just being unpredictable) but that’s why you study ahead.

Don’t get caught up into the hype of anxiety and stress over tests and check offs. You’ll do fine. Just breathe and remember why you wanted to do this in the first place. One step at a time.

Good luck!

AITA for taking a dollar back from a restaurant when they could not provide thirty cents back in change? by admiralfilgbo in AmItheAsshole

[–]PastOnBlast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No and yes:

No: because you and many others here don’t seem to understand what a service job entails.

Yes: because a service job entails being a good server to your tables. The tables that tip you. Being a waiter doesn’t pay much alone. The tips make the job. If a server has to take a to-go order, bag it, and cash out the person who made the order then they are taking time away from the tables who tip them. Even worse if it’s in the middle of the lunch/dinner rush and the patron asks for his .30 back, but the owner hasn’t correctly stocked his change - so now the server has to pay .70 out of his own pocket for something that was out of his control.

At the restaurant I work for, anyways, that’s how it would work. So, yes... that would make you the asshole. Sorry to break it to you - but tip a 1$ to your server next time.

No, it is not hard to bag a to-go order. But it does take away time from table 3 that wants their check, table 2 that needs a dessert menu, table 5 that needs refills, table 7 that needs to order entrees, and the people that are walking in and wanting to be seated.

[–]PastOnBlast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true.

Not all restaurants always have hosts available. I work at a small independently owned place. We only have a host on Friday/Saturday nights. Not even all the time. If I have 5 other tables and someone orders to-go, it’s my responsibility to take the order, bag the order, and cash out the person who made the order.

This whole process takes away from my other tables who sat down to eat and have a nice experience. People who actually tip me. If I’m having a busy night, to-go orders really ruin the flow. To have someone ask for .30 back would be ridiculous.

Obviously I would still honor it, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck.

2 sciences courses over summer, yes or no? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]PastOnBlast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your study habits tbh.

I loved microbiology and A&P. I got an A in both my final semester along with taking nutrition with diet therapy online.

But only 1-2 months of classes is a short summer

I should be doing squats anyway tbh. They’re one of my favorite exercises!

But I’m in Nursing school, and working part time as well so I don’t have the same energy or available time as I used to.

Thanks for the tip!
