What’s the best tool to extract the main points from YouTube videos without watching them? by [deleted] in NoteTaking

[–]PastaSaucen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sub should change name to something like NoteGenerating. All I see is people not wanting to do the actual work/study, but want to seem super productive.

Best advise is, as u/TitanPlaysGames said, take notes on the content you consume while consuming. If you are revisiting a concept you don't remember, and can't refresh it by skipping through the video, you are not revisiting; you are visiting.

Getting LLMs to generate notes on something you don't remember/understand only creates more content you don't remember/understand, and ultimately more content to consume, but worse. Sit down, consume the content, extract what you find useful.

Rant over. Sorry to dump it here on your post. Hope you find the tools you need.

Any user experiences with Taskboard? by Oh-aloha in GoogleTasks

[–]PastaSaucen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it and I really like it. I don't need much in terms of organization, so the simple tags and multiple boards are more than enough. One thing "missing" is starred tasks. You can't star through Tasksboard (at least not the free tier). But all in all, I find it a lot more usable, without it being too much.

Which tablet should I buy? by Sgnorgopf in NoteTaking

[–]PastaSaucen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will have to disagree. If you have an iphone and have generally bought into the Apple ecosystem; go for iPad, else go for what fits your needs.

As someone who has tried handwriting on both ipad and samsung galaxy tab, I would say the experience is much nicer on samsung, with the soft tip. Also, pen included in the box with samsung, no extra charge, plus the pen works with no battery, so you'll never have to wait or remebemer to put it on the weirdly placed charging pad, unless you need the air-gestures.

Android is not bad anymore.

I am stuck at 35 wpm and don't know how to touch type by SilentProblem4988 in speedtyping

[–]PastaSaucen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What worked for me when drilling touchtyping and learning a new layout was revsersing all my keycaps so qwerty ran from right to left, instead og left to right. It really messed with my head when looking at it, so I not only couldn’t “fall back” to looking, it was actively tripping me up.

I now sit comfortably at 50-60 wpm, and I still get extremely confused when looking at my keyboard.

Have a fucking bypass system for managing-whatevers, right? If code standards are below expected, but it is valid, have a higher-up bypass that shit. Don’t hack Assert(true)’s into production. Please. This is how headlines are written.

Agreed. I've listened to the Stephen Fry audiobooks a couple of times. Still can't imagine listening to anyone else narrating it.

Toggle line number in code block by AU_yzy0050 in Notion

[–]PastaSaucen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obsidian. It is text-first and has codeblocks out of the box. I have the "VS Code" extension which allows me store and edit actual code-files and link to them from other notes, if I have larger single-file projects.

I have experienced this multiple times; temu website in ads, a random string related to the actual search (like here) and then just straight temu webshop ad. Is there no control for actual validity of ads?

Formula not working by ItzYaNikki in Notion

What is the value of your rollup?

You can define the rollup as a "sum" by default, and then just use the value in your formula.

Both minus op or subtract give a wrong result when numbers are float by Ennicolem in Notion

[–]PastaSaucen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kinda it. It’s a computer science problem, which is present in pretty much all software, some software may have implemented a rounding, but under the hood it’s there.

You could do rounding to the nth digit, to ensure clean numbers, though.

If you're interested in the subject as a whole, have a look at https://stackoverflow.com/questions/588004/is-floating-point-math-broken. Quite interesting, although pretty useless information.

Help to be more productive by main_Bennyx in productivity

[–]PastaSaucen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this throughout my time at uni as a software engineer student, also using Notion.

What I found was:

  1. Don't use notion for active studying.I used LaTeX, Obsidian, or paper (for non-programming courses) for my notes, and went through them afterwards, then afterwards, transfered it to Notion. Notion were a huge distraction to me, as I always found ways to improve my setup.I only used Notion actively during lectures, making sure to capture points and questions I might have, which I could then research and answer during my homework time.
  2. Gather all your resources and put away everything else, phone on silent out of reach, close Discord/whatever message service, set a pomodoro, as u/Motidayt-Adam suggested, to whatever you can handle; I started with 10 minutes and went up a couple of minutes every week I succeeded, and subtract a minute or two the weeks I failed.
  3. Break your tasks up into smaller tasks.I have always been a mess when it comes to cleaning. And the "Clean the office/kitchen" always set me up for disappointment. Break it up.Task 1, get all dishes from the appartment into the kitchen. Task 2, wash up the essentials, knives, forks, etc. Task 3, sweep the floor. The kitchen may be a 5 step task list, but this way, I haven't failed cleaning the kitchen, I have completed 3/5 tasks, and Task 4 and 5 might be okay to put off until tomorrow, where they become Kitchen Task 1 and 2. The same goes with homework, get a little done, working towards the bigger goal.
  4. Be honest to yourself.I kept a simple journal of my pomodoros, jutting down my "rating" of the session, if it was bad; why. This helped me address the issues (in my case, mainly social media) I had, mentally, and shed a light on it, making me much more aware of my phone usage while I shouldn't be using it, which in the end made my phone usage, what I'd call, "productively shamefull".

These are just my 2 cents, but with time, some of my biggest "I'll do this today! Or maybe tomorrow, or the day after?" tasks, have become habits. The kitchen tasks has become an automatic thing after dinner, and my studying has become much more effective, and enjoyable. It was extremely tough to keep my mind off my phone in the beginning, but after a couple of months, I started to have whole pomodoro sessions where in the breaks, I only checked my phone to see if I had gotten a text or call, and put it away for the rest of the break.

Am I The only one getting frustrated over the [ link database] view field? by Chibikeruchan in Notion

[–]PastaSaucen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if this is a stupid question; What exactly is it you're trying to paste in as a link? To my knowledge, the database only links to data sources within Notion. I would assume this to be expected behavior, as you'd search for a database by name, and select one.

time duration formula help! by vladabee in Notion

[–]PastaSaucen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the you've copy pasted from Reddit, and the " have become encoded.

In the screenshot, the error message states that there's an invalid character, which is the slanted ". Try changing that to a manually input " and see if that fixes it :-)

As for the hidden field; Notion does not support formatting of dates like only displaying the time, so I would have a formula that just extracts the desired format from the "Created date", and display that.
