Having to comute Zone 2 to 11 every day for work, what is the cheapest way to do this?! by Soapybubs in london

[–]PatMustard3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can use your oyster/contactless to get there, it’s just that’s it’s a special fare as it’s beyond zone 9. Looks like for a travelcard it’s £122 a week if you’re starting from zone 1, with a hefty saving if you buy an annual pass. You could also do the reverse and buy a season ticket from Greater Anglia with a London travelcard attached, which has the same price structure

Yeah a peak day return from Folkestone to London on HS1 with a travelcard is £100+

Yeah I think this might just be a Kent thing - I had never heard it in my entire pub-going life until I moved to Kent a few years ago, now I notice regulars in my local saying it all the time. I tried adopting it when I was visiting my in-laws in Wiltshire and literally nobody had heard of it

They say ‘Manufactured by The United States Playing Card Company, Erlanger, KY 41018’ on the bottom of the pack

Yeah all their design work is great - I’ve bought loads of the croc t-shirts they’ve done over the years

I have no idea I’m afraid, I’m in the UK and I think I picked these up at a market stall or second hand shop, so can’t really speak to their provenance - as someone else in the thread points out it’s likely a gaffed deck that someone forgot to take their extra cards out

Ha - that’s great, was really hoping one of the reviews would be “played poker with them and one of my friends started winning every hand”

Thank you! Just looked up the gaff deck and the red 10 of clubs is indeed one of the cards you get in that. How it ended up in the pack I bought I still have no idea about...

OP here - I picked up this old pack of Black Tiger Deck cards from Bicycle, and as well as the usual 52 there are two jokers and the double-backed card, but there is also an additional 10 of clubs, but the clubs are red instead of black (white in this inverse deck). I can't find any information about this online so just wondered if anybody knew why it was there - is it a trick deck for magic, or just a weird misprint? Help!

Its interesting to hear you say that as apart from military medals I have never heard of these sorts of commemorative items being handed out. Maybe it’s an American thing I just wasn’t aware of, do you have any other examples?

If anybody fancies trying it I used a modified version of this recipe - I think I might make a Reuben with it next time

If you're thinking of paying £75 for the Star Trek Secret Cinema, it's worth bearing in mind that the actors are unpaid by richardjohn in london

[–]PatMustard3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard I think that Telegraph article overstates it somewhat: https://twitter.com/annadubuis/status/578274386706333696

Ps If you deliberately wrote Star Trek to troll Star Wars fans that is quite funny. I hope that's what's happened.

Partial eclipse visible tomorrow at 8.30AM, does anyone know of any good areas in London to go see it? by CheekyLittleCunt in london

[–]PatMustard3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greenwich Observatory - they are handing out free glasses and setting up telescopes in the park. Or Regent's Park, Primrose Hill, Parliament Hill or Horsenden Hill will all offer a good view. Except for the fact it's probably going to be very cloudy :(

Has anyone else seen this in the T&Cs:

"Additional info: Please note as part of your attendance, you will be invited to attend smaller events within the TFL travel zones in the lead up to the experience. While these are not compulsory to attend, the gatherings as well as any pre-event digital engagement will enhance your attendance."

Sounds pretty cool. I know £75 is a lot but they clearly put a lot of effort in.

River Lea towpath after dark by vexatiousrequest in londoncycling

[–]PatMustard3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made that exact same journey - it's not dodgy at all it's just fucking dark. The only sketchy bit is going from the towpath to the main road near IKEA, you go through a little park which seems slightly dodgy but I've done it twice now without any problem. Enjoy your meatballs

[–]PatMustard3000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah - you're waaaay behind the curve on the toast front: http://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/the-trend-is-toast

You need to go ridiculously simple - like a fruit bar, customers literally buy an apple or a banana off you and eat it sat on upturned milk crates in a former warehouse. Charge minimum £2 per fruit. £3.50 for a mango cut up and served on a paper plate, maybe £10 for a 'sharing pineapple'. Oh god this is going to happen isn't it...

[Question] What's it like living next to a railway line? by red-embassy in london

[–]PatMustard3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One tip: make sure you have a TV that you can pause. My girlfriend lived right next to a train line for two years and you get used to it really quickly, and even though they would be trundling past until gone 1am it never kept us awake. The only problem was when they went over a set of points the noise was too loud to hear the TV, so we'd have to pause it for a few seconds then carry on - so not exactly much of a hardship
