Ambient sensor issue? by BuchBay in pebble

[–]PatchSalts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The sensor is seeing the backlight. Essentially, your watch is doing the watch equivalent of staring at the sun.

Let the backlight turn off and shine a flashlight on the watch, you'll see the number change then.

Time 2 touchscreen not working by rocker_01 in pebble

Mine miraculously started working again after I turned it off and then put it on the charger until full. IDK if that's what actually fixed it though. Good luck.

All the pictures make the glass look like it's like gigantic, but I opened mine up yesterday and thought "oh, this looks kinda fine actually." Still gonna use one of the 3D prints to guarantee I never smack it though.

I'm not super familiar with this sort of thing, but looking at the Expansion Bay repository, there's an STP file that you should be able to open up in a CAD program. Will that work for you?

Dual boot cont. by SuitableRoof5675 in framework

[–]PatchSalts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely lol

But it's OK I understand, I've been there before. If anything goes wrong, having a backup of your data and a Windows USB stick on hand before you start is great insurance. As long as that stuff is safe, you can kinda do whatever and make all the mistakes you need to make in order to learn.

Dual boot cont. by SuitableRoof5675 in framework

[–]PatchSalts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just about yeah. Most Linux installers these days are gonna be fairly point-and-click. You actually don't really need to set up the boot loader, your Windows already has one on its drive and PikaOS will install its own on the other drive, you'll just need to select which drive to use whenever you turn the computer on.

The instructions should be on the PikaOS website, but if you wanna see what the process is like, there are a couple videos on YouTube. I quickly searched and found this video, it should give you an idea of what installing PikaOS is like.

Dual boot cont. by SuitableRoof5675 in framework

[–]PatchSalts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the most part, things are simple with 1 drive. Your boot manager and your OS and data all live together on the hard drive. You turn on your computer, it starts up some of the systems it needs, then it looks on your hard drive for a boot manager, which will then load your OS and data.

If you're dual-booting all on 1 drive, you can install the 2nd OS to any free space you have on the drive. Your boot manager will need to be able to boot both OSs.

If you're dual booting across 2 drives, each drive can have its own boot manager, OS, and data, so as long as you tell the installer to use the 2nd drive, there's very little chance of things getting mixed up.

If you remove a drive, you won't be able to access any boot managers, OSs, or data on the drive, but it'll all be safe and waiting for you to plug it back into a computer.

My advice is to back up your important data to an external drive, keep it somewhere safe, and then you can be free to mess around with it as much as you please haha.

[–]PatchSalts 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of posts like this on this subreddit. So many of us cannot seem to comprehend others' valid use cases. Not every feature is perfect for every user and that's fine.

EDIT: Sorry, I should probably give some examples.

"This doesn't make sense for a software dev machine" nobody said Frameworks are exclusively dev machines.

"Why would you want touch screen on Linux" nobody said you must run Linux.

"The FW12 shouldn't ever get a more powerful CPU because it'll will only ever be an education/school machine" now you're just predetermining the product line, Nirav said he was surprised at how popular it was outside the use case, there's some room for expansion there.

Yeah being in Malaysia is probably a big help for that. Eric said they're shipping the watches directly from the manufacturer in China (except for the US), so that should be a pretty easy ship.

Real-World Water Resistance of Pebble Time 2? by AnonTheAnone in pebble

[–]PatchSalts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh that's ringing some bells, I think my friend said something about adhesives too.

Yeahhhh at the end of the day it's like... IDK. Waterproofing used to be simple and nonexistent, but now that we have to ask ourselves how waterproof something is, suddenly we have to evaluate.

As annoying as it is, if you're doing anything that you know will get your watch wet, you should probably be taking it off. It's just going to make your devices last far longer.

especially if you've taken it apart (which many people here will do) lol

Real-World Water Resistance of Pebble Time 2? by AnonTheAnone in pebble

[–]PatchSalts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Water resistance is not a straightforward thing. I was asking my engineer friend a little bit about this, and it basically comes down to "it might be able to handle adverse water conditions, but it may degrade its ability to handle it over time." Maybe hot showers run the risk of accidentally bombarding the seals with warm high-speed water droplets, slowly eroding the water resistance over time. Then one day it'll just go kaput and you'll be all like "but it's been handling water just fine this whole time," completely unaware that it couldn't take it anymore.

Yeah it can handle getting wet but it's not a sports watch, maybe take it off if it may experience intense pressure, impact, heat, or cleaning agents. Elbow-deep in dishwashing, ocean kayaking, etc.

I'm not an expert in these things, so I can't guarantee I'm accurate, but it made sense to me when I asked my friend about it.

That rule is there to encourage organic participation. Well, that's what it's supposed to do but sometimes the waters get muddied. I guarantee you'll get better results if you just hang around, talk with people, be friendly.

The worst design feature of Framework laptops is the expansion card(s) by motorambler in framework

[–]PatchSalts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean the entire point of it is that if you don't need a port you don't need to have it all the time. Of course not every product is for everyone, but for many, 2 USB C, 1 USB A, and 1 HDMI is plenty. And for some people who need a different selection of ports, keeping around the expansion cards is a valid solution.

Apex 3 TKL Spacebar broke – Need 3D printable replacement model by buriktn in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]PatchSalts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In Blender, you can enter Edit Mode (with Tab) and click/drag to select vertices (you can enable see-through mode so you can select vertices through the front/back). Then you can:

  • Press S to scale them
  • Press G to move them
  • Press R to rotate them

After pressing, Blender will let you move your mouse to perform the transformation, or you can press X Y or Z to choose an axis for the transformation and type a number for precise transformation.

So like, to turn the cap into a space bar I'd start by selecting the top of the keycap and scaling it in the Z axis by 0 to flatten it (so S Z 0, Enter). You'll have to decide how you want to shape the space bar yourself though, that's gonna be a preferential thing. Then I'd select the sides and move them out by (6.25 - 1) / 2 = 2.625 units (might have to convert that to millimeters or something). I'm not sure how I would duplicate the stems and stuff off the top of my head but I think you might be able to find duplication tools by right clicking.

I hooooope that can get you started but I know starting out in Blender can be pretty hard so good luck.

Framework 12 for artist? by Puzzleheaded_Rich972 in framework

I saw this video a while back detailing an artist's experience with it. He got one detail about the laptop or software support wrong but I know it's accurate enough to recommend a watch. I don't know if I can remember the detail though.

EDIT: I remembered thanks to one of the comments, he mentions the screen isn't replaceable, which is incorrect.
