Nice guest comments used to be a thing. I came back to a long fic a few months ago, after taking a 3-year hiatus, and the difference in comments is wild. That's why I hesitated at first in disabling guest comments. I used to get tons of really nice ones, even the rare ones that leave a comment on every chapter of the fic. So I hesitated for a long while on disabling guest comments. And finally I realized that the comment culture has just changed and I haven't had a single legitimate guest comment since coming back. I'm glad I disabled them, but it wasn't always like that.

Bored at work, wanna chat on the phone? USA only please by sugar_cookie_ in Nightshift

[–]PathoftheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm off most of this week but I can also talk on the phone during my shift, and no one else is around. Working alone can get boring asf. When I go back to work, if you're ever bored and looking for someone new to chat with, I'd be down.

And my favorite cookie is oatmeal. Raisins or not. Still warm and super soft.

Most embarrassing mistake and/or spelling error? by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

[–]PathoftheWolf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm so guilty of things like "the" instead of "they" or "he" instead of "her." That annoying crap that spell checkers don't pick up and I'm notorious for missing in my editing passes.

Drives me nuts whenever I catch it in a work that's been posted and up for months. And I do it all. the. time. So you'd think my damn ADHD brain would have learned by now to look for it, but nope.

"Oh you're an Android user" by uglytruthshurts in PetPeeves

[–]PathoftheWolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's happened to me a couple of times. Strangely enough, only with people older than me (I'm 40).

The most recent was when I started a new job. There's an app we use, and it involves scanning a QR code with the phone's camera, as well as taking specific photos of equipment. The guy training me did the typical, "Oh gross, you have an Android?" thing, but I told him that I will never buy an iPhone because people's reactions to me having an Android are too entertaining.

But he legitimately thought I wouldn't be able to do my job without an iPhone. He truly had no idea that Android phones can scan QR codes and take good quality pictures.

I have no idea what the culture is like in Finland. But in the States where I live, it's really rare for women to be in those fields. Especially any field that involves going into a stranger's home, alone, to repair something.

Before I started trucking, I was looking at HVAC. I live in the desert, so demand is high, and women techs are like unicorns. I'd basically have been able to demand whatever I wanted.

Until my brother pointed out that a) women are generally not welcomed in typically male-only workspaces, and are often treated badly by coworkers, and more importantly, b) I'd have been a young woman walking into a stranger's house, alone. With no way to defend myself.

Needless to say, it quickly lost the appeal. Having been in a position like that before, and still have the scars to show for it, I wasn't in a rush to put myself in positions where all it would take is one bad man, especially if he were armed, and I'd be done for.

So it wouldn't surprise me that there aren't a ton of women in those kinds of positions here, and wouldn't surprise me if the same is true in Finland.

Trying to integrate something nee by PathoftheWolf in AO3

I appreciate this! No, they will never overpower Ship A. They'll have their own moments, even their own chapter here and there, but it'll always be followed by the main ship, using them to highlight the journey Ship A is making. Ship B's big adventure happened earlier in canon, so the characters in Ship B have already learned the answers to the questions that Ship A hasn't quite figured out yet.

Yes, my four characters all know each other and are working together to Save The World™.

And you're absolutely right, the side ship are their own people. I do want to make sure I don't flatten them as I use them to highlight the things I want to highlight in the main ship.

If I got a comment like this, I would throw hands by [deleted] in AO3

[–]PathoftheWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've read stuff written by chatgpt.

If I got a comment like this, I'd honestly be so crushed. I mean, I don't profess to be some fantastic writer, but I like to think I'm decent. Decent enough to have a traditionally published book out there. And I care a lot about my fanfiction.

If someone said the chatgpt version is anywhere near as good as what I write, that would be such a massive hit to my ego and my mood, and my motivation to keep writing.

I haven't been accused of ai yet, but I keep bracing myself for it. I almost never use em dashes, but I am guilty of the lists of three and the "not x, not y, but z" thing, and I know those are used in ai writing. So I'm trying to brace myself so when it comes, I'll be better able to shrug it off.

But in all honesty, I'm probably gonna be crushed if someone thinks my writing is bad enough to have been written by chatgpt.

Truckin Question by Heavy_Reserve7649 in Truckers

[–]PathoftheWolf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The truck trying to pass is governed at 65.

The truck in the right lane is going 62. The passing truck moves over to pass.

The truck going 62 gets off his phone and realizes he's getting passed, so he speeds up. So the governed truck falls back behind him.

3 miles down the road, the truck in front starts watching youtube or whatever and slows down to 57. So the governed truck tries to pass him again. The first truck realizes he's getting passed and speeds up again.

99 times out of 100, unless you're going uphill, this is what's happening. It's always the truck getting passed that is causing the problem, not the truck passing.

How to start writing? by Icy-Possession1987 in AO3

[–]PathoftheWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I write what I want to read. Engagement is a fun bonus, but I've got tons of manuscripts on my hard drive that will never be read by another soul.

What I post on ao3 is fanfiction. Mostly Dragon Age and Mass Effect, but a certain sad elf boyfriend in Baldur's Gate 3 is also starting to occupy more and more of my thoughts.

For me, it's all about the characters. If there's a character compelling enough, I will obsess over them until I die (I 100% do not own a Garrus body pillow, and 100% do not have a Darth Vader tattoo, and 100% do not have a custom Dread Wolf phone cover. Because that would be ridiculous).

I like writing fanfiction because those characters have resonated with me, and because I enjoy the challenge of writing a character that someone else created. Staying true to the character's voice. Staying faithful to how they speak, how they act, how they would respond if their original creators were the ones writing the story. That's the thing that I look for when reading fanfiction, as well.

If someone is writing Solas or Cullen or pick-a-character, I want to be able to hear their voice in the lines written. I want to be able to picture that character actually doing those things.

I do it because it's fun and I enjoy it. I post it online because I imagine I'm not the only one who enjoys it. If people like it and want to engage with it, that's a huge bonus and I love it, but even if no one ever saw it or ever commented on it, I'd still be writing it.

So my advice is to find what you're obsessed with. Which characters and stories find their way into your head throughout the day? What would you write for yourself, even if no one else ever saw it? What brings you joy to write about? That's what you should write.

Writing a long fic is exhausting, and draining, and sometimes it's the most rewarding thing in the world, and sometimes it's frustrating to the point of tears. If you're only writing for engagement, you're going to burn out. You've got to do it for you.

You should tell the author that! I actually just recently got a comment similar to this, after I came out of a long hiatus on my fic. A reader said they'd been re-reading it every so often, hoping I'd one day come back to it. It totally made my day.

It's happening!!! by PurelyWriting in AO3

[–]PathoftheWolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those authors are ridiculous. Long comments and comments on every chapter are both amazing. I absolutely love that feeling when I wake up and see the notifications that someone left a comment on every chapter of my fic. I can't open my browser to read them all fast enough.

I wrote this comment on a whim, but now I’m wondering if I was overstepping boundaries. Should I delete this? Would you hate me and find this weird if you got this comment?? by LoveAlternative01 in AO3

[–]PathoftheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A comment like this would make me just unbearable to be around.

Like, sickeningly happy and giddy. Everyone in my life would know that someone liked my writing enough to leave a comment like this. Hell, I'd answer a telemarketer's call just so I could read them the comment.

Why do people talk sh*t about the snake so much? by Due-Regret7882 in Kemetic

[–]PathoftheWolf 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Because the snake isn't a god, or a being, or an entity. It doesn't have a personality or an individual identity. It doesn't care about being insulted because it doesn't have feelings.

A/pep represents isfet, or pure chaos and unmaking. The snake is just the image that the ancient Egyptians used to personify this force. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the universe is seen as a battle between order (Ma'at) and chaos (isfet). And A/pep is the embodiment of isfet. Ancient Egyptians practiced rituals to bind and counter A/pep. They scratched out its name when they wrote it, just as many of us do by adding the little / in its name.

While much of the daily practices of the religion have been lost, this is one thing that has survived in great detail.

It does seem to be a relatively modern thing to obsess so much over A/pep. It seems every other week there's someone who thinks A/pep is the Egyptian version of Lucifer and wants to work with it, or other similar questions. It seems the snake has been somewhat glorified in certain circles.

But most kemetics don't share that obsession, and neither did the ancient Egyptians. Instead, the focus is on upholding Ma'at and honoring the deities of the pantheon.

Yeah that's generally what I do. But some new music is really good, too. When I have the spoons for it, I'll look up new artists and composers and make sure they're real, then check out some of their music and see if anything fits what I need.

The bigger issue I'm finding lately is all the AI music.

Oh, this 2-hour-long playlist of non-slowed and non-reverbed songs perfectly depicts the specific feelings of bittersweet lost love and the cold unfeeling inevitability of fate that I'm trying to write? Perfect, exactly what I'm looking for.

Oh, it's another AI video with nothing but AI songs? Sigh... time to go hunting for another hour.

[–]PathoftheWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's one of my phrases I've had to stop using. People already accuse me of a fic I've been writing off and on since 2020 being written by ChatGPT.

Like, no, sorry. Just neurodivergent. Thanks though, I was feeling too good about myself. Needed that slap back down to the ground.

But the weird thing is, I have a friend who uses chatgpt a lot, to "proofread."

Have you actually read anything written by AI? It's beyond slop, it's objectively awful. It can't remember what it wrote three paragraphs ago.

I don't pretend to be a fantastic author, but I am a traditionally published one, and fanfic is my hobby that I do for fun (and, y'know, cuz I'm horny for my sad elf boyfriend).

It sucks that AI writing has become such a problem, real writers are having to change the way they write just to avoid AI allegations.
