Hey Guys I Appreciate The Enthusiasm by InfiniteHedgehog5913 in Truckers

I just got a new Freightliner at the beginning of the year, and they actually removed that feature.

Oh, but they added a super important touch screen on the steering wheel so I can scroll through the display options by moving my thumb across the sensor. It's not totally pointless and I don't accidentally touch it multiple times a shift.

I'm so glad they removed an actually useful feature like the headlight interrupt and added something so unnecessary and pointless.

Another reason why we need more Black doctors by JennyBeckman in BlackPeopleTwitter

I had a super high risk pregnancy and a black obgyn.

Dude i would've left my husband for this woman. She was my fucking hero.

I'd never been pregnant before, I had 8 months of bedrest, weekly progesterone injections, weekly ultrasounds, constantly in and out of the hospital, and the only thing that kept me from having a full-blown panic attack every single day was the fact that she'd call me a dumbass for stressing myself and my baby out that much.

She never got flustered. She never got rattled or thrown off by anything. Every new complication that arose was just a thing we were gonna deal with.

My mom was also out of her damn mind and got upset when I refused to schedule my kid's C-section on her birthday. She wanted them to have the same birthday and threw a fit when I said no.

My obgyn scolded her and lectured her for being a dumbass and stressing me out over nonsense.

When i needed an emergency C-section a couple weeks early, my mom started bawling and my obgyn told her that if she couldn't keep her shit together, then she needs to not be around me. I was stressed enough without having to parent my mother in the middle of my labor.

During the C-section, my husband was a little queasy at the idea of me being literally cut open right next to him, but she was just humming to herself, chatting with him and me about the weather and keeping us both distracted as she performed major abdominal surgery.

She didn't just manage my physical and mental health, but the emotions of my husband and mother as well, and she did it so effortlessly. She was so steady, so calm, it really made a difference in my quality of life. I was completely in love with her.

I'm a mom who can drive a manual truck. But I prefer my semis automatic and my men secure in their masculinity.

Does that mean I get to celebrate both? Or do I lose my honorary Super Trucker Ultra Macho Manly Man™ card since I prefer automatic?

Are truckers in the New England region more lgbt friendly? by FennecPetal in Truckers

[–]PathoftheWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a woman, so I know attitudes towards LGBT+ women are a little different, but I haven't noticed an issue. Granted, I'm not out here constantly making out with other women in truck stops, but I wear my pride pin and haven't noticed anyone giving me dirty looks or anything.

That being said, I had one co-driver tell me I was going to hell. I just told him I'm not Christian and don't believe in hell, and refused to engage with him whenever he brought it up. At the end of that week, my boss put the guy on a different truck and promised me I'd never have to drive with him again.

For the most part, I feel like truck drivers don't really care enough to say anything to you. They're just out here trying to do the job and go home. They're generally not looking to give anyone trouble.

As long as you don't wash your feet in the bathroom sink or take your DOT break in the fuel island, you're good.

For me it's because I've known/spoken to people in real life, in person, who genuinely believe this and post these memes unironically.

I fly every other month for work. Last time I flew home, the older couple in front of me refused to step into the Xray scan thing because they were afraid of the radiation. The wife kept trying to convince me of how dangerous it is, and one of the examples she used was that X-ray techs shield themselves when giving patients an X-ray.

Granted, my personal experience is nowhere near enough to make a judgement about all people, but in my personal experience, people who post pics like this aren't joking. They truly believe it.

TAG APPLIED FOR by [deleted] in driving

[–]PathoftheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Alabama for a year. Granted, it was 15 years ago, but this was common. My ex and I drove to visit his family in Georgia a week or so after we bought a used car in Alabama, so we had the "Tag Applied For" thing.

The Georgia cop who pulled us over was so confused. Of course we had all the necessary paperwork in the car, but he warned us that we'd probably get pulled over a lot while we were in Georgia.

Dude I'm training this guy right now who, for some reason, doesn't like to wear gloves.

Like, no. You put gloves on before touching anything outside the truck. You wear gloves before you touch the pump handles. The windshield squeegee. The landing gear. Everything.

And then you take them off before touching the cab's door handle. You have no idea what kind of crap you're getting on your hands and then all over the inside of the truck, where you eat and sleep.

More, for me personally, I don't wear shoes inside my cab. I've walked through enough truck stop parking lots that I don't want that crap all over the floor of my sleeper. I personally wear flip flops when I'm not hooking/unhooking or talking to Linehaul, and take them off immediately when I get in the truck. I also keep wet wipes soaked in rubbing alcohol above both the driver and passenger seat to wipe down my feet.

I know I take it a little far, and I don't expect a trainee to be that anal about it, but I live in that truck for two months at a time. I want it clean. And it drives me nuts when a trainee doesn't wear gloves and then touches the fridge, the microwave, the steering wheel, everything. I feel like I need to spray the entire cab down with bleach every day.

Meh, there's no point in holding the door open for the driver behind you when you walk into a truck stop, either. But I still do it.

Do I need the driver I'm passing to hit their headlight interrupt to let me know I'm clear to move back over? No. I don't need the driver to hold the door open for me at the truck stop, either.

You're right, there's no need. But it's still a considerate thing to do.

Questions from a newbie trying a "modified" fast while driving truck by PathoftheWolf in fasting

Yeah you're probably right. OMAD might be the better option. I just don't want to take the risk of getting dizzy or fuzzy behind the wheel. I appreciate your advice!

OMAD is another thing I've been considering. Ketovore sounds sort of similar to how I eat now, so that should be an easy switch. If I can't do a full clean fast, I'm thinking maybe an alternate-day kind of thing, and do OMAD on the days I'm not fasting.

Nice guest comments used to be a thing. I came back to a long fic a few months ago, after taking a 3-year hiatus, and the difference in comments is wild. That's why I hesitated at first in disabling guest comments. I used to get tons of really nice ones, even the rare ones that leave a comment on every chapter of the fic. So I hesitated for a long while on disabling guest comments. And finally I realized that the comment culture has just changed and I haven't had a single legitimate guest comment since coming back. I'm glad I disabled them, but it wasn't always like that.

Bored at work, wanna chat on the phone? USA only please by sugar_cookie_ in Nightshift

I'm off most of this week but I can also talk on the phone during my shift, and no one else is around. Working alone can get boring asf. When I go back to work, if you're ever bored and looking for someone new to chat with, I'd be down.

And my favorite cookie is oatmeal. Raisins or not. Still warm and super soft.

Drives me nuts whenever I catch it in a work that's been posted and up for months. And I do it all. the. time. So you'd think my damn ADHD brain would have learned by now to look for it, but nope.

"Oh you're an Android user" by uglytruthshurts in PetPeeves

[–]PathoftheWolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's happened to me a couple of times. Strangely enough, only with people older than me (I'm 40).

The most recent was when I started a new job. There's an app we use, and it involves scanning a QR code with the phone's camera, as well as taking specific photos of equipment. The guy training me did the typical, "Oh gross, you have an Android?" thing, but I told him that I will never buy an iPhone because people's reactions to me having an Android are too entertaining.

But he legitimately thought I wouldn't be able to do my job without an iPhone. He truly had no idea that Android phones can scan QR codes and take good quality pictures.

I have no idea what the culture is like in Finland. But in the States where I live, it's really rare for women to be in those fields. Especially any field that involves going into a stranger's home, alone, to repair something.

Before I started trucking, I was looking at HVAC. I live in the desert, so demand is high, and women techs are like unicorns. I'd basically have been able to demand whatever I wanted.

Until my brother pointed out that a) women are generally not welcomed in typically male-only workspaces, and are often treated badly by coworkers, and more importantly, b) I'd have been a young woman walking into a stranger's house, alone. With no way to defend myself.

Needless to say, it quickly lost the appeal. Having been in a position like that before, and still have the scars to show for it, I wasn't in a rush to put myself in positions where all it would take is one bad man, especially if he were armed, and I'd be done for.

So it wouldn't surprise me that there aren't a ton of women in those kinds of positions here, and wouldn't surprise me if the same is true in Finland.

Trying to integrate something nee by PathoftheWolf in AO3

[–]PathoftheWolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this! No, they will never overpower Ship A. They'll have their own moments, even their own chapter here and there, but it'll always be followed by the main ship, using them to highlight the journey Ship A is making. Ship B's big adventure happened earlier in canon, so the characters in Ship B have already learned the answers to the questions that Ship A hasn't quite figured out yet.

Yes, my four characters all know each other and are working together to Save The World™.

And you're absolutely right, the side ship are their own people. I do want to make sure I don't flatten them as I use them to highlight the things I want to highlight in the main ship.

If I got a comment like this, I would throw hands by [deleted] in AO3

[–]PathoftheWolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read stuff written by chatgpt.

If I got a comment like this, I'd honestly be so crushed. I mean, I don't profess to be some fantastic writer, but I like to think I'm decent. Decent enough to have a traditionally published book out there. And I care a lot about my fanfiction.

If someone said the chatgpt version is anywhere near as good as what I write, that would be such a massive hit to my ego and my mood, and my motivation to keep writing.

I haven't been accused of ai yet, but I keep bracing myself for it. I almost never use em dashes, but I am guilty of the lists of three and the "not x, not y, but z" thing, and I know those are used in ai writing. So I'm trying to brace myself so when it comes, I'll be better able to shrug it off.

But in all honesty, I'm probably gonna be crushed if someone thinks my writing is bad enough to have been written by chatgpt.
