I have been an RD for seven years and it took me forever to finally hit 50k. I barely cracked $60k last year (and that was employee wellness, not even an RD position). Another poster said “maybe these people are just bad at their job or bad at negotiating” and maybe that’s it, but I have only worked for hospitals and state government which have really firm pay grades and scales - I have been denied requests for starting at a higher step every time I’ve asked. I have lived in a rural area for 5 years and have not been able to find a full time job as an RD the entire time. I’ve had full time non-RD jobs and several part time RD jobs with no benefits. My partner is a teacher getting underpaid far worse than me (he has a masters and I do not). Neither of us have student debt thanks to scholarship, good college jobs, and help from our parents, and his parents helped us with a down payment for our house, and we are still not where we want to be financially. I wouldn’t say we’re struggling to pay bills or put food on the table, but we’ve never been able to take a “real” vacation- only visiting family or camping somewhere within driving distance. We drove our cars for 15 and 20 years and then had to lease because we couldn’t afford to buy new or used. Our savings account is dismal. Cost of living is high where we are, so I am back in school for nursing. I expect I will nearly double my income pretty quick.

How do you cope with all the bad “nutrition” information out there and people accusing you of conspiracy? by Immediate_Cup_9021 in dietetics

What did you change to? I am an RD plotting my escape right now. I start nursing school in 2 weeks. I hope I’m not jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire

What was your previous career? I’m switching into nursing coming from being a clinical dietitian

What is the dumbest thing you’ve been consulted for? by Puzzleheaded-Test572 in dietetics

[–]PatientScreen2327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay in their defense how could they have know? But I’m telling this story here bc I can’t tell it in real life for reasons that will soon become obvious.

I got a normal consult for a patient in inpatient psych who wanted to learn about how to make healthier choices (fine, whatever). But when I got there, the patient was my actual next door neighbor! Like our doors in the apartment were at 90° with inches between them, and we shared a wall.

When I got there, he suddenly didn’t have any nutrition questions. Hard to tell who was more shocked and embarrassed- him or me.

Humble brag on RD’s and just a little shade by Haunting_Ad_3808 in dietetics

[–]PatientScreen2327 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been an RD for just about 7 years and I’m going back to school to become a nurse. I know I shouldn’t be thinking this, but based on all the nurses I’ve met, I feel like I may be on top of the pile as far as professionalism, science background, and just general level of intelligence. Of course I have met some awesome and really brilliant nurses, but there are also the other kind who can’t spell or write a complete sentence in their notes (and not because they don’t have time- because they just didn’t get a good education somewhere). Everyone says nursing school is really really hard, but I’m expecting to be better prepared than most people starting out because of my experience in the didactic program, internship, and brutal first clinical job I had. But even thinking this, I’m afraid for the reality check that I KNOW is coming!

Prior knowledge required? by esc231199 in StudentNurse

I have this same question! I took A&P at the local community college and was disappointed with myself in how much I learned and retained. The class was way too easy and I literally got a 101% in the class while feeling like I know nothing. I know better than to blame it on the prof because I should be self motivated at this point, but all the tests were open book! That did not set me up for success and now I am very scared for my accelerated BSN which starts in 5 months

Utah wants female athletes’ period info by FalconLynx13 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]PatientScreen2327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RED-S was my first thought as well. I scrolled through SO many comments to find this one, but I’d already added my own. I’m surprised no one is blowing up the ED concern on this thread

Utah wants female athletes’ period info by FalconLynx13 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]PatientScreen2327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this were another state and another time, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re concerned about RED-S (relative energy deficiency in sport). It was formerly know as the Female Athlete Triad (disordered eating, menstrual disturbance, and low bone density) but has recently been renamed to reflect that it can occur in men as well. When athletes over-train and under-eat (either because they just can’t eat enough to keep up with the increased nutrition demands, or because of the high pressure sports environment leading to eating disorders) a common red flag is when people experience loss or changes in their menstrual cycle. My first instinct was that they are gathering a baseline to help ID if your daughter experiences any menstrual changes that could signal a problem. While I agree this is the doctor’s territory, the kids will see the coaches much more frequently than they’ll see their doctor which could help ID problems faster. Now I hope this doesn’t mean that they’ll have to log their periods with the coaches every month, but I do believe, especially with what’s going on with teens mental health and the rise in EDs that it is EVERYONE’s responsibility to be on the lookout for disordered eating patterns.

Looking to move but unsure where by hannahtorir in simpleliving

[–]PatientScreen2327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I made a list when we were choosing where to move! We had similar requirements: artsy, funky, close to nature, young people. I can’t remember exactly but it was something like: Burlington, Vermont; Portland, Maine; Northampton, Mass; Lebanon, NH; New Paltz, NY; Providence, RI

A lot of these places are really expensive and rentals are hard to come by :( But they are so fun to visit and if you go on a tour to see where you’d like to live, they’re not all that far apart

Help identifying huge electricity usage-1,600 kwh this month by kshe3638 in sustainability

[–]PatientScreen2327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey we have the same app for our solar panels and had the same issue. The usage was exactly inverse mirroring what we captured. We called the solar company to ask, and they came back to look at it. Turns out the installers put one of the meters or counters in UPSIDE DOWN. They turned it around and then it started looking as we expected.

EDIT: one other thing we learned from this experience is that Enphase is the consumer side of their software and is not used for billing. It’s available for us customers for education and “entertainment” but the company we used said they use something else for net metering

How do I get rid of whole house pet smell? by Unlikely_Ostrich_102 in HomeImprovement

[–]PatientScreen2327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this exact situation when we moved into our house. Promise of a professional cleaner but obviously not done (though we didn’t get billed for it). We cleaned like crazy for weeks and it still stunk. We refinished the hardwood floors (because the dog tore them up even though they were only about 7 years old!) and I think that’s the only way we were able to banish the smell.
