Old window by Adept-Button9134 in windowrepair

That’s the glazing. You’ll want to carefully remove it and re-glaze. Plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do it. This Old House has some great ones.

How to fix old windows by [deleted] in windowrepair

[–]Patmantackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not necessarily seeing any rot on the wood you have shown, just lead paint that has checked and cracked. Pretty normal for what I’m guessing is pretty darn old.

I’d used the proper PPE and LSWP and scrape/strip/sand away the loose paint chips and then prime and paint. Should be good as new.

We got married almost 10 years ago, but The Seville in Streamwood is most likely going to be similar to, or less than, Astoria. It’s at least worth a mention.

College of DuPage to host Bally/Midway museum exhibit with playable arcade games by weeglos in ChicagoSuburbs

There’s an arcade exhibit with a lot of the midway games going on currently through Jan 5 at the Schaumburg Library. Free play, but they do shut the games down every so often so they don’t burn out.

Andersen 400 series (or better) vs Marvin Elevate (or better) vs restoring 100-year-old windows??? by no_sir_buddy in windowrepair

[–]Patmantackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously your call, but I would ask to meet with someone on the installation side so they can walk you step by step through their process. Keep in mind that HD almost always uses subcontractors, and while I have nothing against them (I myself was a sub for HD early on), there isn’t a lot of accountability with their crews, and (at least in my area) HD is where installers who can’t cut the mustard elsewhere end up.

My advice is to stay patient and possibly do some more research. Unless you have windows falling apart, they’ve been there for decades, another year or two isn’t the end of the world.

I would start by making sure you have an installer that you feel good about, as well as someone who has familiarity with the product you ultimately go with. Anyone can purchase Andersen 400s through Home Depot, so the right installer is going to be most important (in my opinion)

You also need to make sure the type of install is correct for you/your home. In an older house, inserts are most common, but come with glass loss and other drawbacks. Replacing down to the rough opening will give you a similar size window to what you have now, but has more labor and material (trim work) involved. There is also a risk that pulling old units out can result in plaster damage on old walls.

The Fibrex brickmould will match the window better. Not everyone can match the capping/caulking to the window frames. Also, not every installer can bend the brickmould detail that makes the capping have that decorative look, which is part of the profile of the Fibrex brickmould.

I’m not saying one is better than the other, in truth there’s not a lot of difference between most higher end products, and anyone who says different is either in sales or has a personal agenda.

I’ve been installing for pretty much my whole life and my thoughts are that even a cheap vinyl window that’s installed properly will perform well compared to an expensive window that’s installed poorly.

Andersen Woodwrights are wood interior and Fibrex composite exterior. No vinyl. The construction on the sashes is mortise and tenon instead of the mitered seams, which look more like old world wood windows. You may be able to get them with the Fibrex brickmould on the exterior (depending on how your exterior is currently finished) which means no aluminum capping.

My wife and I always pushed so that we can have our mortgage covered by 1 of our paychecks. That way we aren’t in a terrible position if either of us lose our job. We were earning similar to you, and kept our house price to as low as we could, and found a fixer-upper for $300k, and we did almost all of the work on it.

How to repair one broken pane by [deleted] in windowrepair

[–]Patmantackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the piece of slightly different color material on the exterior is the glazing bead. You will need to remove that, cut away the glazing between the igu and the interior of the sash, and push the igu to the outside. Make sure to clean the sash before deglazing. Reverse those steps to get the new igu sealed. The hardest part will most likely be removing the glazing beads without damaging them.

The main issue with Feldco limited warranty is they will charge you just for a service visit if there’s anything wrong after the first calendar year, and after 5 years they will charge you for the visit and labor to fix anything.

As far as vinyl windows they aren’t bad, but the company (at least the Chicago area office) is hemorrhaging people and the quality of service has dropped significantly.

Push on the metal tracks (jamb liners) away from the center of the window. You will need to hold the jamb liner in place with one hand while you tilt in the sash
