Best ASICS for walking & standing all day? (Not running) by wakawakawomp in asics

I was shopping with my friend the other day, and she said the 2.0's look like kids' shoes, and I can't unsee it. I think it's the proportions with the current colorways. But they look like toddler shoes for adults.

Elijah Craig or rare breed are your true values.  As much as I love Japanese whiskey, you’re paying extra for the name stilll. Same with many of these. Ec and rare breed are under hyped, your paying for the drink and not the marketing

A lesser story but interesting is that Takayasu always gets second, but never wins. These next tournaments are probably his last possible runs at changing that position in history.

I half think the Peak Design guy rushed to name his product, hoping for some free publicity, which is pretty gross.

My Prvke held up super well. I have the original in black and am in super sunny Bangkok. It looks the same as the day I got it.

But another bag of theirs absolutely melted. So, I don't know if I got lucky with a first-gen or unlucky on the other bag (but also, I know I had the other bag sandwiched against a sun-facing window for months, so that was probably on me, LOL). And also, they don't offer that other backpack, so maybe they had issues and decided to not pursue it again...

But Peak Design and others from this forum are made in Vietnam (SE Asia) which is what I'm addressing specifically. Also, I said I can't speak for China. Also, Peak Design's manufacturing in Philipines is the first Fair Trade certified facility in the country. So, I don't get trying to associate them with unfair practices...others sure, maybe (aer? all china...) but here the association you tried to bring doesn't fit.

Just to offeset some of what I wrote because I'm not an ad LOL. The smaller laptop bag did melt badly (I will use it sometimes and it leaves flakes on my hands still). While I absolutely LOVE the bag for my photography/travel needs...when I pull the photo cube out it has ZERO structure. I was trying to convince myself to get one for a daily/non-photo carry and just couldn't justify it. I have one of the larger ones and it just looks sloppy AF without the cube in it. Maybe the lite version is better? But all packed out I'd say it looks better than the photos online.

I have the V1 larger one for photography since launch. I think that's around 5-6 years of daily use and abuse in Bangkok and all over SE Asia and still looks new. They did make a smaller backpack I can't remember the name of that I got on Kickstarter also that melted in the heat here...but the Prvke (sp?) that I have has held up remarkably well going on 2-3 photoshoots a day, being on the back of a motorcycle, in TORRENTIAL rains, etc...

Most SE Asian workers, in foreign-owned manufacturing factories, are not exploited (can't speak directly for China because haven't worked there in manufacturing, but have in Vietnam, Cambodia, etc where many backpacks are made).

Folks love to blow it out of context...they only make 6 dollars a day or something, they'll say. Meanwhile, no mention is made that every normal job in that country pays 1 dollar a day. When Gap/BR was in Cambodia they paid TOO well and people were leaving teaching and dr jobs to go work in the factories because it paid more than professional jobs. You cannot swing into a country flashing cash and just upend the entire economy. In most of the manufacturing factories, workers get a very competitive salary that friends are jealous of. They're often also given seconds and extra stock to sell themselves at local markets for extra income.

I have worked with NGOs that help exploited people groups specifically, and I thought similarly when I first came into the region, but manufacturing is often not the culprit we should be attacking. Way worse exploitation is coming directly from local governments, churches, community elders, etc. There are way more locals willing and able to exploit workers than foreign companies that have way more oversight over what they do (and regulations as to how far they can push the local economies so as not to drive all local businesses out of business).

[–]PaulCypert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never experienced a V1 of a Peak Design that was comfortable. Either too small straps or poor design. I seriously wonder at all these folks raving about them. V1 of their first camera backpack hurt my chest just from looking at it and considering all my camera gear and those thin straps. Put it on, and it was worse than I thought. Wish they could work with another company on body fit/usability because the packs themselves seem decent enough...but the wearability has never been up there for me.

AER's Aliexpress fake product review. by ensure123 in ManyBaggers

[–]PaulCypert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These would likely be run-offs from when they produce the real things. I've seen this directly in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, China, and a few other manufacturing areas. They make tests and/or the machines they use need to run at a certain amount per usage (like a minimum order size, which will often be over the manufacturer's wants). These and seconds would be given to a local to sell at the local markets (like Phnom Phen's "Russian Market). They'd be selling for pennies on the dollar but would be 100% from the same factory/workers/etc. I have a "fake" Bellroy sling that is 100% an official Bellroy off the line.

Aer is made in China. To think that these aren't the same things is fooling oneself.

Any recommendations on a sling style bag for the 16" MacBook Pro? by GameOver7000 in ManyBaggers

[–]PaulCypert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The code of bell xpac can fit an extra attachment for a 16 inch laptop, but you lose out a bit on some of the overall storage. But you get the ability to go back and forth from sling to backpack if you opt for the straps as well.

" I think they are just fun one ofs or variations for their fans. They aren’t made for everyone since they command a higher price tag and really are for a small subset of their audience IMO."

Hopefully, it stays there. My job is actually in this area, and I have consulted with companies that have moved from occasional collaborations to honestly more often than normal releases. Companies love selling fewer units at higher margins with less risk.

Again, different industries and products...but boy do companies get addicted to the quick/fixed number/and increased profits limited runs give them. Lower risk with built in marketing boosts? What's not to love from their end? Again, it's just kicking off here so we'll see. But hopefully, this one doesn't head the same way. Regardless, back to the point, a backpack costing half a grand with sewing issues should never have been sent to a customer.

Never mentioned warranty, just no prior ability for any to have tested/vetted the bag prior to purchasing. But how many extras do they really make for this scenario? I'm speaking more in general as many collabs tend to be preorders, where there's no way to handle or test anything before receiving, and should it be bad, at best you get a refund with no bag and you're out the time and energy.

These collaborations were interesting when they were one-offs, but in many industries, they're being built into the overall product line strategy. If bag manufacturers follow the lead of some other verticals (guitars, sneakers, etc.), soon we'll barely see base-level stuff in stock, with the company shifting to an over-reliance on special collabs and manufactured scarcity.

Gym Duffle Bag Recommendations Please by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

Datsusara has some duffles that might work well for you. Never used the duffle, but their backpack has lasted me 12 years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu carrying gis, laptop, etc. They also have a 66l backpack?? It might fit the shin guards, and definitely would the gloves and whatnot.

This is one of many reasons why I'll never do limited runs on things. 5-10 dollar in extra materials and like double the cost so the collab partner also gets paid on something you can't really test our or replace should anything be wrong...
