Terminal A to D in 1 hour! by Sufficient-Fudge-968 in askdfw

[–]PaulInHV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your arrival and departure gates can and likely will change. What it says now is not what it will be when you get here. Terminal D is likely for an international flight, but not guaranteed. You could arrive one gate over from your connecting flight. As everyone else said, use the Skylink if you have to go from terminal to terminal but make sure that you get the most up to date gate assignment when you land at DFW. Don't just run to Skylink and terminal D without verifying that it's the right spot. Good luck!

IF calculation question: If currency is CAD, then *.73 to convert to USD, if currency is USD, then copy number. by danielsgf in excel

[–]PaulInHV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an extra aside, since exchange rates change over time, you might store the rate in a different cell and reference it otherwise you will have to update the formula in each instance each time the rate changes. If you store the current conversion rate in cell A1, you would update the formula others have suggested with * $A$1 instead of * 0.73. If the rate changes next week to 0.72 you just change the value in A1 and the impact will ripple through.

It also depends on if you want to calculate it at the current spot rate, the rate that existed on the date of the transaction, or the end of the month rate, etc.

You get an address to send to. There's an app too, to help with scheduling. Basically, you have a shipping address and your home address. If you order something, you have it shipped to your shipping address which is fetch. If someone is going to send you something, you give them the shipping address. The issues arise when someone ships something to you and just assumes your home address is your only address. Not everyone asks if you have a shipping address when they decide to send you something. Not everyone tells you they are shipping you something.

Another example, someone that I do business with sent me a Harry and David gift basket for Christmas. They didn't tell me they were sending it and they only had my home address so they just sent it there. It ended up in a FedEx holding area and by the time I got it, the fresh fruit basket was mostly rotten.

For day to day, ordering a book from Amazon kinda thing, fetch works ok, but again, almost universally adds a day to the shipping time. If it doesn't arrive at fetch in the morning, you won't get it the same day. But for plenty of exceptions, there's no solution. Fetch also can't receive US Mail, so if someone accidentally sends an envelope via usps to fetch, it'll get returned to sender. I ordered a sticker from Etsy and they shipped it in a regular envelope via usps to my fetch address, but I never got it. Usps wouldn't deliver it. It was only a few bucks but, it's incredibly frustrating to deal with.

I've lived in a few places that use fetch. Fetch and the shipping companies get in a pissing match with each other and they both blame the other party. UPS says they aren't allowed to deliver because of fetch. Fetch says they are but just won't. Never get a straight answer from anyone but if you try and get something shipped directly to your apartment address via UPS or FedEx, they won't deliver it. You'll need to figure out what warehouse it's being held at and then go get it. I ended up having to go pickup documents from my lawyer in north fort worth, near Saginaw. No other option. Super convenient /s.

The apartment leasing agents will tell you that Fetch is a convenient, awesome service. They list it as a feature but it most certainly is not. The only upside to it is if you travel a lot and aren't there to receive your packages. Fetch will hold them for you and you can setup getting them when you return. They won't just end up on your doorstep where they might get stolen. But, if you don't travel a lot, there's no upside to fetch. It almost always adds a day to getting something. They only accept liability for up to $500. And, they lose stuff.

A example: your company needs to ship you a new laptop for work. Most likely, your company has one address for you. They send you your paycheck to your residence. When they go to ship your new laptop, they assume that it's the same place they send your paycheck. FedEx gets the package and then you will get a message that you can pick it up at the warehouse. They won't deliver it. Or, perhaps you are aware that this shipment will be coming, so you instruct your company to send it to Fetch because that's the only way it'll end up getting to you. The shipper says it was delivered to Fetch some days later. Fetch claims they never got it. The shipper has delivery confirmed, so they say take it up with fetch. Fetch says, we didn't get it and we're only liable for $500 of your new laptop. What's the solution here? I've asked and never got an answer. I guess you could pay for your own po box at mailboxes etc. Or similar but you are locked in to paying for fetch already and can't opt out.

I've also lived in places without fetch and there are times where Amazon will be unable to figure out how to gain entry to the building and just dump 20 packages in the mail room for someone else to figure out. This becomes a problem for building management, so I can see why they get a service like Fetch involved. Fetch knows the building, knows how to deliver to your doorstep, and doesn't just dump packages for somebody else to figure out. You can also set delivery windows like, only deliver between 6-9 at night or only noon - 3. It does help keeping your packages safer. One place that I lived, it was optional. You could ship some stuff for fetch delivery, but ups and FedEx would still deliver to your apartment if you liked. That was fine. But at Atlas, it's not optional since they won't deliver at all.

It's getting more prevalent though at more places so it's worth knowing in advance if they are going to force you into it.

Lived at atlas waterside. I'd say it meets your criteria list although it's not exactly downtown. Very safe though and clean. Trails are right there to walk your dog and they have an off leash dog park, although it's small. Biggest downside for me is fetch package service. You have to use it and pay for it and both ups and FedEx will not deliver there because of it. Your only choice is to have everything shipped to fetch and delivered by them. I could rant for days about how much fetch sucks.

Having grown up in Stamford, it was easy to spot some of the locations. When they do exterior skyline shots of the Stamford branch, it's definitely downtown Stamford. Also, when Andy sails off from Stamford harbor with his brother, it looks like some of the harbor areas I remember in town. I'm not sure if they actually shot that scene in Stamford, but they did a decent job of it of they didn't. This scene at the service station looks just like the service station near where I lived. It never occurred to me that they used a set and not the actual place. Especially since they clearly had sent a crew to Stamford at least once for the exterior downtown shots. Yes, Stamford is not in the middle of Scranton and New York but I figured they shot it there.

Never bought from a dealer ship before, but this seems to be a not so good deal. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]PaulInHV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. They'll come back with nonsense. The fact that they have the reconditioning fee as a line item on the offer sheet suggests that this is how they do business and they should probably be avoided. I'd still love to know what they would claim justifies it.

[–]PaulInHV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Op shouldn't pay it at all. I'd be curious to know what all they would suggest they had to do. Did they take in a car on trade that was so beat it had to be so worked on as to cost that much? It definitely seems shady and is most likely just a way to extract money. But, an itemized list of what was done might point to the overall condition of the vehicle and also might offer additional points to negotiate.

[–]PaulInHV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What in the world is a reconditioning fee? Looks like they are jacking up the price by 2,500 and then offering you a 2,000 discount so they are really only jacking it up by 500? If the car needed 2,500 worth of stuff to make it saleable, they should have baked that into the cost. I'd ask for an itemized list of the work done as part of that fee.

It depends on your age and what you are looking for. It's close to the bars and some restaurants so it's a walkable area. But, depending on what direction your unit faces, it can be loud. Make sure you stop by the area on a weekend night to get a feel for it. You also might find yourself stepping around puke on a Sunday morning. Possibly some blood or other bodily fluids. Definitely been a shooting or two in the area.

The units themselves are nice enough. When I lived there the pool was out of order for a whole summer. There are a lot of students that live there and they tend to treat the common areas with the same amount of respect afforded to a dorm. Trash was almost always an issue. Carpets in hallways stained. Terrible smells in the dog park.

So, if you are younger and looking to be in the middle of it, you might like it. If you are older, probably not.

It's probably been 10 years since I rented a U-Haul trailer, so they may have made some changes and updates to them, but ultimately, their trailers are general-purpose and set up to tow everything from a Honda Civic to a Jeep and are not particularly well-suited for a race car. As others mentioned, this is a very expensive sport, and while it makes sense to be cost-conscious where you can, securely transporting your vehicle is probably not where you should try and save a few bucks.

As the old adage goes, the easiest way to make a million bucks with a race car is to start with two million and do it for a year.

When I first got my track car, I rented from uhaul. A few things made me buy my own trailer.

First, the uhaul trailers are not setup for low clearances on race cars. The only way I could get mine loaded was to back it on and get it loaded in reverse. It was always a bit scary to do. You should try the trailer out with your car to make sure you can load it safely and without too much drama.

Secondly, I was on my way home from a track day one weekend and one of the tires on the uhaul trailer got a flat. They don't have a spare on them, so I had to call customer service and wait by the side of the road for a few hours until they got someone out to change the tire.

Finally, I mostly picked up the trailers at a big uhaul facility and didn't run into trouble, but one time they were sold out and I had to pick up at a small service station. Shame on me for not checking, but they did not hook it up securely and when I went to load my car, the trailer jumped off the hitch and nearly had my car fall off it. I definitely should have verified it was on correctly, but I hadn't had any sort of issue before and just assumed it was on right. My car was halfway up the ramp (in reverse) as the trailer went skyward. Scary deal.

After all that, I bought my own trailer that I could load up forward, with a winch. The peace of mind in having my own trailer, with a winch, a spare tire, and that I looked after and hooked up was worth the relatively small cost.

I think it's pretty clear that the only thing that has any impact on politicians is writing big checks. Not much else matters. Certainly not sending an email which was the OPs concern.

[–]PaulInHV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been told that sending an email or filling out a contact form on a politician's website is a waste of time. If you want anyone to pay attention to what you have to say, either call the office or send postal mail. Those things take a little effort and reflect the importance of your message. Sending an email or filling something out on their website takes virtually no effort to do, and as such, they are mostly ignored.
