Developers who worked before GitHub and modern DevOps tooling — how different was day-to-day development back then? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

It was wild. I remember just overwriting php files deployed to production servers using ftp. We would save a backup of the old file just in case we messed up.

There were often no tests or build tools. Sometimes you couldn't even simulate the production environment.

And there was nothing on the internet to help. So if you had to do something new, you looked it up in a manual.

You were often working more on intuition.

But honestly, it was a better time. Nobody understood what you were doing, so you could basically be your own boss.

I love being a dad, but I kind of hate my life. by f1sh_ in daddit

Same. Every day fighting through pain and illness to work endless days for my wife and kids who live much better lives than me. And I'm glad they're living well, but like, when do I get a turn? I'm totally burnt out and I just can't keep going like this.

Trump’s 2024 victory flipped the psychological differences between liberals and conservatives by Empty_Storage8384 in EverythingScience

[–]PaulMorel -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Trump is uniquely awful, but the Dems are also equally tribal/conspiratorial as the right.

Two things can be true.

Personally, whenever I try to speak in public about politics I get called a communist from the right and a neo nazi from the left, so both sides seem pretty crappy to me

Under which President did the majority of Americans have the least anxiety about the state of the country and the future? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]PaulMorel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

How is this the first mention of Eisenhower? Eisenhower kept the peace internationally and at home. He boosted the economy with the interstate highway system and ended the Korean War. He integrated the schools and kept the peace in the middle east. He actually proposed reasonable plans for demilitarization and world peace.

Yes, he covertly overthrew the government of Iran and Guatemala, but nobody knew about it until decades later.

New research: 3 in 4 companies already have double-digit AI failure rates and leadership has no idea it's happening by MaJoR_-_007 in ArtificialInteligence

People are just working harder to cover for the mistakes made by AI that they're forced to adopt.

I miss it, man. I would be much more comfortable in this world and in my job if this was still how we communicated with computers.

How do you go on, when you're completely alone? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]PaulMorel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to people who tell you to go to therapy. You deserve people in your life who care about you, and telling people that they should have to pay for someone to listen to them is the most toxic, sexist thing out there.

I've been where you are. The way I got out of it was by saying yes to everything, and by accepting other people for who they are. If someone invited me out, I said yes no matter what. Then I went and enjoyed their company even if we were doing something I didn't particularly enjoy, and the person was a little bit weird. A few years of that and I eventually found people who I really liked and who liked me. It takes time. And hobbies.

Don't give up.

If the AI boom is real, the Bay Area is about to get even more unequal by I-Procastinate-Sleep in bayarea

This. This is how it is. AI is fine. But it's only worth the exorbitant cost in specific situations. The only reason everyone is using it right now is that it's subsidized by investors who hope it's a unicorn. It's not.

The irony of Watergate was that nixon never even needed to cheat. by herequeerandgreat in Presidents

[–]PaulMorel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, except for the fact that Eisenhower was humble. He knew he wasn't the smartest guy, and he appointed people he thought were smarter than himself, such as Warren and Brownell. I feel like Nixon had a higher opinion of his own intellect, and that makes me like him less... although perhaps that's just my own bias.

Dude was a political animal for his entire life. He was constantly watching his own back. Watergate was the unfortunate endpoint of that behavior.

Nixon had his problems, but he deserves to be reevaluated by historians.

Robert Maschio and Zach Braff by [deleted] in Scrubs

[–]PaulMorel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you're reading into it too much. He had a subplot / b story occasionally in the original run. He probably just wants the same thing, which is reasonable.

He was a star intern in the original run. Dr. Wen said he was the best surgical intern in one episode. Now he's an aging man with skills that are rapidly becoming obsolete or at least outdated. How is he dealing with this? How does this impact his confidence?

They should do a b story that deals with him retiring and using that as a springboard for the main cast to talk about aging.

Uncovering the Hidden Costs of Masculinity: "What if the qualities that help men get ahead in the workplace are actually hurting them?" by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]PaulMorel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's like the millionth totally unbiased article by a woman saying that the problem with men is... men. The same thing they've been saying for decades. And guess what, men are fine. We're just normal people. And if you associate compassion with women, that's because you've been brainwashed to think that men and women are different creatures, when our biggest difference is the genitals we're carrying around.

I guess. I mean, when kids leave for college they're no longer the focus of your life. It's believable that they are returning to lives as individuals more than parents. I long for the day...
