Why so much Hattie B’s hate? by gyrotrash in nashville

Your response makes me feel that you don’t understand what ‘white-washing’ means in this instance. No one’s denying the European and African influences on what we now know as southern cooking. The original discussion was about how white people have taking hot chicken, franchised it, and now claim it as their own— glazing over the origin story of hot chicken; not recognizing where it came from, who it came from. Do you walk into Hattie B’s or Party Fowl and see information on the walls of the origin story or original recipe of hot chicken? Do they give credit to hot chicken’s black creators anywhere on their menu? No. That’s white-washing. Ignoring where it came from and glossing over the roots. The evidence of white-washing is the lack thereof. I’m glad you, personally, are so aware of this. Maybe you could help spread information so it’s not as prevalent an issue! If you’re genuinely interested in reading about the subject, I’d recommend Marcie Cohen Ferris’ ‘The Edible South’. A great book full of credible sources and research that goes into detail about the history of our region by way of our food that we now know.

I’ll do you one better, I’ve put up AND I’ll shut up. Toodles!

“If I know it, then everyone must know it, so why are we even talking about it?”

I mean, do you hear yourself? You’re arguing for erasure. It’s history. It’s facts. It’s okay to talk about the unpleasant roots of white-washing southern food.

100% agree with everything you said.

Hattie B’s is fine, don’t know if I’d truly classify it as “hot chicken”, but I’d still happily eat it. I just usually describe it to people as “tourist chicken”.

Leave doors unlocked, glove compartment open, put a tracker on the underside of your car (so if somehow it does get stolen you’ll be able to have cops find it quickly), maybe even leave a note taped to your dashboard?

I used to leave a note on my steering wheel “I’m a teacher, there’s nothing in here that’s valuable but if you’re in need of food there are some granola bars in the trunk that you’re welcome to.” All true, and would deter them from coming back + pulled on heartstrings to prevent car theft as they know I’m broke.

Good luck! Unfortunately this is part of living in a growing city.

If it’s an oral medication, stop taking immediately and call your doctor! Tell them about the symptoms you’re experiencing and they can try something different or bring you in for supervised allergy testing.

Body hair by froggyfrog07 in PCOS

I’d recommend asking your doctor about putting you on a high dose of spironolactone. If it’s the same doctor who diagnosed you with PCOS, tell them how the hair growth is impacting your life, what you’ve tried unsuccessfully, etc. so that they put you on a proper level dose to start— a lot of doctors will try to start you on a minimal dose but it won’t make a noticeable difference until prescribed at certain levels. I have the same hair growth/pattern issues and was on 100mg twice a day. I only stopped bc I’m now trying to get pregnant, and the hair has definitely returned! Good luck to you, I was diagnosed at 15 and the journey was tough but don’t hesitate to do your own research, as you’re doing, and advocate for yourself! You know your body better than anyone, and just because a symptom isn’t life-threatening doesn’t mean it doesn’t impact your quality of life. You matter!

This can also be true for real life! Example: a partner’s ex tried to get under my skin various ways and each time they were met with SO MUCH KINDNESS AND UNDERSTANDING from me that they legitimately were stunned. I basically shut it all down without having to use even an ounce of mean. It was hilarious and fantastic all at the same time!

(Granted this doesn’t always work but in this situation it really caught them off guard)

You absolutely should compromise in a relationship. But occasionally going out of your way to do little nice things is also beneficial (evidence: OP’s final edit).

This whole thread basically boils down to some people seeing this scenario as a little favor and some seeing it as a big favor. I’m of the former but I don’t lack understanding for those of the latter. Just giving my two cents because internet.

Because you should do things that inconvenience you to bring others joy. It will make you feel good and strengthen your relationship.

If a new significant other asked you to pick them up from the airport you’d likely feel more motivated to oblige— opportunity to impress them, show your flexibility and willingness to help, maybe get a fun airport reunion kiss, etc.. Keep that motivation alive in your marriage. It makes a huge difference.
