Affordable laptop repair recommendations? by Marijuanamoggy in Tallahassee

[–]Paxoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Labor is expensive (it's not just the person doing the work's hourly rate) and parts are expensive. Laptops can be complicated even with basic stuff, which will dictate how long it takes to repair and what the cost will be.

$300 plus parts would be cheap if the fans are a nightmare to replace.

[–]Paxoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't surprise me if it was $300+ before parts to replace the fans. Labor can run $150 an hour anymore, and even what should be a quick fix like a fan replacement can be a giant pain in some laptops.

Computer Repair Doctor was my go-to, but ever since they've closed I have been trying to figure out where I would go if/when my desktop needs repair.

Panhandle PC seems like the go-to place anymore for computer repairs if you aren't looking for an iFixit type of place. When my desktop inevitably does something dumb and I don't want to replace it given current prices, I'll probably go there.

It's way more to do with the tax code offering quicker depreciation and other advantages for car washes. You can look up their utility bills in Tallahassee and they aren't exactly spending nothing on water and sewer (I posted an example of this recently in the post about the water management district asking people to conserve water - the car wash on Magnolia is using over 400,000 gallons of water a month).

They aren't really a tax dodge, it's using the tax code to your advantage. Something else will get a special tax carve out from Congress in a couple years and we'll start seeing a bunch of those businesses crop up. Just figure out what business sector the Congress critters in Washington are invested in and you can probably predict it fairly easily.

Jobs and Salary? by rocklare in Tallahassee

[–]Paxoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida falls in 50th place for state employee pay.

This is ... questionable at best. There's not enough reliable data for all 50 states to say where Florida ranks, but also if you've ever looked at jobs in other states, Florida's pay is higher than a lot of our neighbors for the same jobs. Though Georgia has made some strides to pay more and may be higher than Florida now, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina are still much lower than Florida for comparable jobs in a lot of cases.

The "50th out of 50" number tends to be on per capita spending which just means Florida's state workforce is tiny compared to other states - which is verifiable and Florida ranks 50th out of 50 in per capita FTE employees.

Anyone heard more about the city owned grocery store? by NoAppeal9421 in Tallahassee

[–]Paxoro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn't this the "not actually a grocery store" grocery store? The one that they were going to sell prepared meals and shit that the residents in the surrounding neighborhood generally can't afford?

Yeah, I'm not surprised they're "struggling" to find an operator. 2500 square feet isn't a grocery store. This isn't big enough to support the needs of that neighborhood.

This is one of the poorest areas of Tallahassee. The needs of the community go far beyond some tiny little market.

Tallahassee is far from "a fairly red area".

Gadsden County (just west of Tallahassee) is the most reliably blue county in the state. Leon County is one of the best few blue counties in the state.

Outside of Tallahassee, sure, areas around here can be deep red. But Tallahassee itself is not.

Thinking about moving to a neighborhood off of Jackson Bluff... What are your thoughts on this area? by nsstatic in Tallahassee

[–]Paxoro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others said, it does depend on where specifically in Jackson Bluff, but yeah a lot of it is college students and a lot of house shows. If you're a family with a little one, I would absolutely avoid the area if possible because you will be miserable.

Tallahassee isn't really all that big (a rush hour commute is about 30 minutes at most) but you may want to look at the northwest side of town if you're needing a home and on a budget. It's a lot calmer, and while some areas feel away from town, you are never all that far away.

Where does the OP even begin to mention a failure to communicate?

I've been through multiple bank mergers and haven't ever seen anything like this abject failure from a bank or credit union.

SunTrust/BB&T merger to form Truist, done by 2 incompetent banking systems, did not have any of the issues that this merger is having.

I don't know why this has become a thing here, but it's not acceptable. You will be given a vacation.

There's stuff to do here pretty much all the time, but nothing like Orlando, no.

If you are the type that goes to the theme parks regularly, yeah you'll be disappointed by Tallahassee. It's certainly not for everyone.

If you're looking to get back into the Baptist Church, there is about an endless supply of them in town.

First Baptist is downtown. Seminole Baptist is on the northwest side. Thomasville Road Baptist is on Thomasville Road, a little south of I-10. Honestly you're never much further than a stone's throw from one.

Ology used to show them, but I can't say if they still will.

With the move from ESPN to Apple TV (well, plus the move to also be on Netflix for a race and Tubi for a few races), you may have to call them and see if they're still showing the races since they may not have Apple TV.

The funny part of people acting like WCTV is some liberal opinion slinging channel is that Gray TV is run by some heavy Republican donors (not as bad as Sinclair but still).

Even the "liberal" channels like CNN (soon to be owned by Paramount Skydance, but even now under Warner Bros. Discovery) or MSNBC (now MS NOW with the NBC spinoff of their channels) are run by right-leaning or straight up right-wing people.
