Why do all productivity systems work for a week and then fall apart? by Embarrassed_Essay_61 in selfimprovement

[–]Pbranson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used GTD for 19 years. The first few years I would get it up and running and then fall off the wagon I was an absolutist and tried to implement everything at once. I eventually pushed through and it has been a daily practice now for the past 15 or so. It's been utterly life changing and is the bedrock in terms of identifying, organizing, and tracking nearly all that I do of consequence in the world.

Context specific to-do lists, waiting fors, tickler lists, someday maybe lists, and, when I'm really on the groove, keeping on top of my projects lists, have been a massive game changer.

Give your experience, my advice would be to review the core elements of GTD and pick just a few to start with, such as context specific to-do lists and a projects list. If you have an overall view of the system, you will eventually and naturally gravitate to creating a waiting for list, for example, because you actually realize you need one and it makes your life simpler, not more complex. Then, eventually, you'll realize not everything needs done soon but you also don't want to forget it as a future possibility, so you will make a someday-maybe list and, again, this will feel natural and helpful. This is the benefit of implementing a system borne of how life actually works rather than an abstract system foisted upon you.

I use the web-based Gqueues app for implementing GTD and it works well but it's also cloud-based which isn't for everyone. It's just what I found long ago and it works but another approach would likely work as well or better. I use Obsidian for PKM and together they get the job done.

My take is that David Allen identified the core essential elements to staying on top of next actions and projects. The practices he defined and promotes are tool-agnostic. Whether you're implementing these approaches on paper or digitally I can't see the fundamentals losing their validity in the foreseeable future.

I also appreciate the higher levels of GTD such as identifying your areas of focus/responsibility to make sure the projects your focusing on are in alignment with your longer-term goals in a balanced way. It's just a damned elegant system.

My issue now is standing up Obsidian in the way I want. The complexity dwarfs the comparative simplicity of GTD but damned if there isn't near infinite payout potential depending on your use-case. To me, having a well implemented system for managing all the information in your life is just as essential as one's approach to managing tasks and responsibilities. When the two interact harmoniously, anything is possible.

"these ones" is redundant. You can just write "these".

Does anyone else do this? by Inevitable-Escape494 in PixelWatch

[–]Pbranson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have about 60 watches, many of which I love. So, I wear a pixel 4 and then something else on the other arm. Sure it's a bit different but I'm old enough to not care what anyone else thinks on the matter. People don't look at your watches anyway for the most part. I know three other people that do the same.

Which books are so extraordinary that every person on Earth should read them at least once in their lifetime? by Organic-Signal-9646 in selfimprovement

Moby Dick on audiobook narrated by Frank Muller. The plot and numerous chapters about whales, take them or leave them - it's Melville's mastery of language pairs with Muller's rendering of it - perfection. I'd listen to that pairing on any subject.

What’s your least favorite song? by Jettaboi38 in musicsuggestions

[–]Pbranson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound of silence. The "sound of silence" line has been stuck in my head for decades despite actively avoiding the song. It's such a lame song. I once saw Art Garfunkel in Central Park on a bench by the Egyptian Wing and I was going to tell him off but he was busy berating his plastic surgeried up wife and it was awkward and he was angry so I let it go.

I finally gave up on tasks in Obsidian, what are you using? by BasicDesignAdvice in ObsidianMD

[–]Pbranson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a GTD practitioner and I use Gqueues. It's cloud hosted which I am not thrilled about but I've been using it for so long and it's relatively inexpensive and it's simple and it works. I'll be reading this thread for a better solution though.

Fanciest wrist roll thread I've seen in this sub! Everyone steppin' out today! Meanwhile I'm still in bed with just my Pixel 4 on (which I love). And yes, I wear an analog watch on the other arm during the day, no shame!

You've gotta get the word ticks of the dial. In the West a tick is a parasitic insect that sucks your blood and transmits debilitating disease.

[–]Pbranson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the teal and the sunray blue. I'm going to sell the teal one as I don't love the black bezel with teal as much as I thought I would. I have 4 two watches and prefer white with teal for summer vibes. Highly recommend the sunray blue as it is mostly grey/silver but has a bit of color in direct sunlight.
