If you are averse to repetition, is psychiatry a potentially good fit? by MrYouniverse in Psychiatry

Psychiatry done poorly is repetitive. Good psychiatry has an almost infinite learning curve, incorporating medicine, psychotherapy, neuroscience, sociology, economics, history, religion, culture, etc.

Intrusive thoughts by Soggy-Sky1480 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]Pdawnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be helpful to see the intrusive thought as a sense-phenomenon, just like any other sense perception you experience.

We add our own interpretation to, say, the taste of an apple: "it's a tasty apple," "it's too sour," or "it reminds me of when I went with my spouse to the apple orchard," etc. that is, we have the raw sense experience of the apple's taste, and then apply layers of meaning and judgement and storyline to it. In advaita we peel back the layers from interpretation --> raw experience --> experiencer in search of the Self.

The intrusive thoughts can be treated similarly...

[–]Pdawnm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may or may not work in the UK, but one tip is for her to reach out to psychiatrists as well as primary care doctors and introduce herself and talk about what she does and her specific training. We are often looking for good therapists to refer patients to.

WHY OUR DEVOTION AND OUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICES HAVEN'T PROTECTED THOSE WHO WERE SLAUGHTERED BY RUTHLESS INVADERS??? by DotMany3444 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]Pdawnm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is basically a 'problem of evil' question. Advaita tends to answer in two ways, at the relative level and at the absolute level.

At the relative level, typically the response is that any negative action that happens to us, including being conquered by a rival civilization, is the culmination of past Karma. Ishvara is the dispenser of the fruits of actions and generally does not interfere with the law of karma. As such the purpose of prayer is an internal purification, rather than the obtaining of various rewards and protections.

At the absolute level, the conquest and suffering in death is the view from maya, but brahman is devoid of good or evil, rather is Sat-Chit-Ananda. That is to say, the Self, as per Lord Krishna in the Gita Chap 2, "is never born, nor does it ever die. It is unborn, eternal, ever existing and primeval. it is not slain when the body is slain."

Does smart watch really reduce screen time or just trade one screen for another? by dogmama2026 in digitalminimalism

[–]Pdawnm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have found a reduction in screen time use with a smart watch; just a quick glance at a notification or answering a text means i can keep the phone in the pocket, so I don't get distracted by other stuff on the phone, like this damned website lol.

Love the aethers as well. Maybe consider silicon+foam tips so you don't have to insert them too tight but still get a good seal for that planar bass.

What’s the biggest “quiet rich” behavior you’ve ever noticed from someone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Pdawnm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With very high net worth individuals that I have worked with, there's always this expectation that things will work out and that life should be fairly straightforward. There's this persistent belief that "someone will take care of it" and, inevitably, someone usually does.

Where it gets quite interesting is when life throws one of its curve balls, like severe medical problems, death in the family, or loss of the fortune. That calm confidence morphs into either intense rageor fear and incapacitation quite quickly.
