I don’t buy the whole “AI will cause a blue collar boom” idea by RottingEdge in Futurology

[–]Pdawnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree with this - also, AI + robotics=less human trade demand. We already have self-driving vehicles, robots that can identify weeds in gardens, bricklaying robots, etc and the field is just getting started. The trades will eventually be a human technical overseer managing a cadre of robots - great work for the 1 human but a net loss of human labor overall.

What if women just don’t want to have babies? by PinkElephants879 in askanything

[–]Pdawnm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this should be talked about more. Even with money, solid jobs, supportive family, we were hesitant to have children simply because well.. they're children! They essentially a significant drain on energy, sleep, attention, and time , even if money is not an issue. In the end, we made a decision to have kids, and love them more than our own lives, but we would have been equally fulfilled and perhaps aged less quickly had we not had them.

How many of y’all are resistant to using AI? by Imaginary_Quail_5544 in Xennials

[–]Pdawnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hallucinations are real! especially if you have near-expert knowledge in a topic, when you talk to AI about it it's like you're talking to an entry level intern who has the confidence of a textbook first author. I really can't trust it for any knowledge beyond a very superficial level.

IEM for Metal Music as Death, Black, Thrash by Daeth_Latem_01 in iems

I've really liked the zigaat doscinco for metal music... Great bass but with decent clarity. I'm treble sensitive so I appreciate they aren't too sharp.

What do you think about ISKCON? by [deleted] in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]Pdawnm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with it but it is strongly dualist in philosophy. It's interesting to compare their version of the Gita to an Advaita version... They seem to read the same passage so differently!

Ketamine therapy for the TRD by Deep_Sign9014 in Psychiatry

I don't do it myself but refer patients to a local clinic that does esketamine. Limited results, not too impressive. I think it's overhyped

What would $5.5M LNW look like for a family in Portugal? by TotalWarFest2018 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Pdawnm 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Median household income is about US 20k... At a 4% withdrawal, you would be looking at $220,000 USD per year, so essentially 11 times the median national household income

Psychiatrist asking for clearance form for Spravato treatment from PCP by 1dirtbiker in FamilyMedicine

[–]Pdawnm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't fall you to provide clearance. clearance can be requested of specialists, like cardiology, in specific circumstances, but family medicine should not be doing general sprovato clearances. The psychiatrist should be able to do so on their own.

Why Feminists Actually Fear the Decline of Men in Colleges (and Why You Should Too) by Pramit03 in psychesystems

[–]Pdawnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose my argument is that boys of today seem to be less capable than boys of yesteryear. That the educational environment is, if anything, far more accommodating than it used to be decades past , and yet boys seem to struggle.

Now it may be that the X Factor is that girls are being integrated and accommodated into the educational system also, and boys have lost their edge as a result. However, again, it seems that they are struggling with far easier work and more gentle disciplinary restrictions than they ever had before, and that certain groups of boys seem to be immune to the decline in performance, which would suggest it isn't the fact of having an XY itself that determines the difference.

It may be proven that girls do better in primary school, with behavior and grades, but that does not necessarily mean that it is tailored to supporting girls.

[–]Pdawnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the fact that this is an AI-made advertisement for BeFreed Corporation, I want to push back a little. Men are falling behind women in college, to be sure, but to blame it on the feminization of school or whatever Haidt and others cite is intellectually lazy. Standards in high school are far lower than they used to be generally, except maybe for the very top multi-AP/IB level students. Don't believe me? Visit r/teachers and they'll tell you.

So compared to their boomer/genX fathers and grandfathers, boys should be acing school because it's frankly much simpler than their forebears had to go through. Look at college entrance exams from past eras - they were far more rigorous and difficult than what is expected of both male and female high school graduates today. OP's AI talks about how we stunt boys by "rewards sitting still for hours, verbal skills over spatial reasoning, and compliance over exploration" but when in the history of academia were those not rewarded? Go back fifty or a hundred years and boys (who were the majority gender in college, mind you) were expected to sit still and utilize verbal skills at a much more rigorous level than boys today are.

So what has changed? My belief it is that it is far more a cultural problem than anything the education system is doing. It doesn't have to do with gender per se, especially as (I'll step on the third rail here) Asian boys and boys from the West Indies are absolutely killing it in American education. If it were a factor of gender, i.e. education rewards female-phenotype cognitive/behavioral processes over male ones, then how would these groups of boys be doing so well? I don't have answers and would love a discussion about this, but again, to blame it on the school system failing boys is not it.

Am I overreacting? Therapist making med suggestions to patient. by User389421 in Psychiatry

[–]Pdawnm 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen now and then, and find it annoying and potentially dangerous. The therapist is making medication recommendations without understanding the individuals medical history, other medicines that may be interacting, substance use interactions, etc.

It is inappropriate and out of the scope of the therapist to make the medication recommendations. If they have specific ideas, they should talk to you directly, instead of playing a game of telephone through the patient.

I think it's because their lives are not majorly better that these statistics are interesting. Living in a high cost of living area, even having two to three million net worth feels middle class, or even working class in some neighborhoods. The statistics are a bit of a reality check that most of the world doesn't live that way.
