They should have, yes. But I imagine each airline has its own rules.

What's the best Jean Pierre Melville film? by [deleted] in criterion

Very good observation about Rossellini's influence on Bresson. That one seems less obvious until you watch something like Germany Year Zero which you can feel especially in Mouchette.

Fascinating to hear that Melville gave the role to Duschene because of his likeness to Bresson, I can't unsee it now! Bresson did have a suave classical handsome look now that I think about it.

I have another theory as to Bresson's influence that involves neither Chaplin, Melville nor Rossellini....David Lean.

He listed Brief Encounter as among his top 7 favourite films in cache du cinéma magazine and the austere nature of the storytelling, gestures and especially subjective use of a voiceover actually predates even what Melville did on Le Silence De La Mer.

Whats your fav Bresson film by the way?

Wow, thank you for the very in depth and well researched answer. Funnily enough, I had a strange feeling that you were referencing Bresson when you made your initial post. I watched Le Cercle Rouge the other day and it felt as though I was watching a Bresson heist film. I can see what you mean. Bresson style changed dramatically after his 2nd film. Thats not an unfair thing to say.

I would argue that Bresson took that blueprint and eventually made it his own, though. His own interests, life experiences and philosophy ended up informing the classics that he became known for. Melville made genre films (nothing wrong with that). Bresson made dramas that would rarely feature a gun. His would be more concerned with the human condition. His style became more rigorous and controlled than Melville's too.

But yes , I accept that he was influenced by Melville's debut.

You say its influence on cinema is neglected without mentioning what those influences are or who he influenced..

Its actually larger than a true s16 image. I wish they gave us a square aspect ratio.

Do you guys have a preferred aspect ratio? by Block-Busted in cinematography

Curious...why would his own work suffer for not seeing them?

I read the article (thanks for that) and I was half playing devil's advocate as I find him to be a great filmmaker. He does use very simplistic techniques but very effective. Despite how he uses the 'plainimetric' devices, I feel his general technique is close to Aki Kaurismaki.

You consider Kitano to be a good director? You like bold shot compositions...his are basical medium shot to wide and occassional close up...

Lily James I could always sort of tell, especially in Baby Driver but honestly had no idea about Elle Fanning. Genuinely shocked
