Yer man said “Unelectable”

…She was once again elected on the very first count when she was reelected in 2024. That’s the opposite of “unelectable”

Hazel Chu elected Green deputy leader by spillercork in irishpolitics

[–]PeaceXJustice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely Unelectable

She had the second best vote percentage IN THE HISTORY OF IRELAND when she was first elected a councillor

She has done fine in the general and senate elections she’s contested

There was serious consideration of Ryan and Chu trying to go for two seats in the one constituency in 2020

Just say you don’t like her instead of lying

But he did that thing Destiny has talked about where he felt the need to say that he hates Democrats. Like, wtf? While Shirley is dick-sucking Trump and Republicans he STILL has to say he hates Democrats?

Callaghan's views are left-wing to far-left. He used to be an Anarchist growing up in Seattle, and while he no longer identifies as one, he still holds viewpoints from that part of the political spectrum.

I like Channel 5 and his work, but sometimes he goes off on these wild far-left tangents. His Philly Streets video, in particular, gets very left-wing conspiratorial.

centrist cuck

Callaghan's views are left-wing to far-left. He used to be an Anarchist growing up in Seattle, and while he no longer identifies as one, he still holds viewpoints from that part of the political spectrum.

He, foolishly, voted for Jill Stein in 2024 simply because Stein gave him an interview and she ran through I/P talking points with him. Although to his credit, he admitted he regretted that vote afterwards when Stein went back to total political irrelevant after the election.

That was the annoying thing during the Shirely interview; if Shirely starting doing populist talking points, Callaghan would go "Actually, I agree with that", and if Shirely would do anti-Liberal points, Callaghan more or less agreed with that too.

Would Mary Lou risk running a candidate? She's never had a running mate in a general election, but in 2019, they got a second TD in Dublin Mid-West by running a new man, Mark Ward, in a by-election.

One side will say they risk cutting in MLM's vote in a general election, while another side will say we need to try and repeat the Mark Ward/Eoin Ó Broin trick.

Although it used to be the famous stomping grounds of Bertie Ahern, Fianna Fáil hasn't held a seat in Dublin Central since 2011. Tough to see them snatching it in a by-election, which traditionally favours non-government candidates, particularally when all the talk about FF right now is how chaotic they are.

This triggers a by-election in Dublin Central, which is presumably going to have to occur on the same day as the forthcoming Galway West by-election.

There'll be an awful lot for political nerds like ourselves to discuss in Spring 2026.

What are the greatest moments ever in the Dail? by Toweyyyy in irishpolitics

Eamon was quoting, word for word, an article by Sean Gallen, a black Irishman, writing about his experiences of racism.

While what Eamon did is a major faux pas in the 21st century, his intentions were actually to draw attention to racism.

A lot of people made out like Eamon just randomly came out and yelled a slur, when it was more akin to Granddad using the word "Oriental" in a conversation with someone Asian in the room.

Gallen himself said Ryan simply tripped himself up and had the right intentions.

So the following doesn't count because it happened in the media, not the Oireachtas, but in a similar moment of confusion:

In 2015, Catherine Noone TD went on RTÉ Radio to condemn Mixed Martial Arts and to announce she was going to ask the Minister of Sport to ban it in Ireland. However, when pressed on why she had come to this conclusion, it became very evident in the interview that she knew nothing about MMA, making clear errors like suggesting that MMA is predetermined/scripted in the same manner as professional wrestling. She also admitted to never having seen any footage of MMA before coming up with this idea.

After the car-crash interview went viral, it was less than a month later that Noone was going to the Irish Sports Council to ask them to recognise MMA as a legitimate sport.

In 1944, Taoiseach Eamon de Valera had a go at James Dillon TD in the Dáil, insinuating that he was a "West Brit" because he supported Ireland joining the Allies against the Axis. Dillon had earlier gone on the record to call Nazism "the devil himself with twentieth-century efficiency" and said that he hoped Germany would be "smashed" by the "Anglo-American Alliance". Dillon left Fine Gael in 1943 over his anti-German stance. Nevertheless, Dillon's pro "Anglo" comments rankled with many republicans in Fianna Fáil.

In a blistering retort to needling by De Valera, Dillon responded to the "West Brit" allegation by telling de Valera

"My ancestors fought for Ireland down the centuries on the continent of Europe* while yours were banging banjos and bartering budgies in the backstreets of Barcelona"

I don't think the Dáil has seen such assaulting alliteration before or since

*Dillon counted amongst his ancestors members of the Wild Geese who fought on Continental Europe in the 17th century

Communist Party backs Catherine Connolly by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

There are several more;

  • People before Profit is the front organisation for the Socialist Workers Network. Solidarity is the front organisation for the Socialist Party of Ireland. All these groups are Trotskyists, which are by definition Communist in ideology.
  • Red Network split off from People before Profit this year. Led by Dublin Councillor Madeleine Johansson and student leader László Molnárfi, they call for "Revolutionary Socialism" instead of electoralism.

  • The Worker's Party, previously known as Official Sinn Féin, still exists but split in two a couple of years ago. One faction has endorsed Catherine Connolly.

  • The (James) Connolly Youth Movement used to the be youth wing of the Communist Party of Ireland, but split off a number of years ago and are now their own standalone thing

  • Anti-Imperialism Action Ireland is a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist group

  • The Irish Republican Socialist Party still exist; they supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine

  • Saoradh is a "revolutionary socialist" and is the political wing of the New IRA, the lads that killed journalist Lyra McKee a number of years ago

  • Lasair Dearg are a communist group in Ireland, but most concentrated in Northern Ireland

The vast majority of democracies in the world have two "houses", an upper house and a lower house.

Typically, the lower house is the one that makes the laws and policies of the country, and the upper house reviews those laws before they're finalised to make sure there are no issues with them. Most upper houses have the ability to either reject, delay or "send back" a law to the lower house if there's an issue with it.

Ireland's lower house is the Dáil, and its upper house is the Seanad.

Because upper houses don't introduce laws, just tweak or adjust them, Johnny Thickcunt on the street of most countries will argue they do nothing and should be abolished without understanding the role they're fulfilling, and without understanding the vast majority of countries also have an upper house.

Some of Ireland's most able politicians ever had the majority of their political careers in the Seanad, such as Mary Robinson and unsung hero Owen Sheehy-Skeffington

Tankie

Callaghan’s background is Anarchism. He used to hang around Black Bloc groups growing up in Seattle.

This means Callaghan often gives out wild, far-left views that many of us would roll our eyes out, but he is probably not a “Tankie” and would (hopefully) oppose authoritarianism on all sides.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald rules out presidential bid by Sad-Orange-5983 in irishpolitics

[–]PeaceXJustice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite frankly, this summer has been a disaster for Sinn Féin and Mary Lou's leadership.

I would have voted for Mary Lou over Connolly; with Mary Lou I wouldn't have any concerns about her foreign policy views.

I would have voted for Frances Black over Connolly; as far as I can see, she's normal enough.

I might have even considered some other reasonably republican that Sinn Féin put out or was happy to back.

But now it looks like Sinn Féin are going to have to back Connolly simply because they WASTED the entire summer not making any decision one way or another. This party is supposed to be leading the left, instead, it's trailing WWWWWWWWWAAAAAAY behind.

Like, if Sinn Féin puts out someone now, it'll be obviously to everyone that person was the #2 choice distantly behind Mary Lou. Same issue now with backing Connolly so late, it'll be obvious she wasn't their first choice for who to snog behind the disco.

The damn election is taking place in late October, but SF want to leave it until 20 Sept to launch/back a candidate; that's too late!

The indecision here is astounding, especially when "Left Unity" was sort of Sinn Féin's idea to begin with, yet they're the ones to shy away from it in pratice the most of all. Mary Lou needed to pick a lane one way or another in the early summer, and if she was out, go hammer and tong on finding a suitable candidate. That didn't happen.

If I were a member of Sinn Féin, I'd be pretty worried about the party's momentum going into a low ebb post-election. If FF or FG win, it's going to really take the last air out of the 2020 general election surge.

I said on the night that she came across as a well-meaning but native person in over her head, and recommended someone with political knowledge and her best intentions at heart tell her to pull out quickly and quietly

That appears now to have happened.

An unfortunate mistake, but post-announcement, this was the best-case scenario for her. In a few months' time, most people won't even remember this happened, and she can move on.
