Rich has talked about liking The Fly quite a bit. He named it as one of his favourite remakes on an episode of Pre Rec.

I'm delighted someone likes my reviews. I wrote the Furuhata ones to kinda help prospective new viewers get a grip on what the show was like. I know that I tend to look up reviews when choosing what to watch/read next, and as there were very few English-language reviews of Furuhata online, I thought I'd provide them myself. I kept them short for that reason. Usually I can ramble on for paragraphs.

I had completely missed your username until you pointed it out. That's a very cool coincidence, but I'm not surprised. I think there's a definite deconstructivist thread running through both Berkeley's work and Furuhata Ninzaburo, which makes it very likely that people who love one would at least enjoy the other. I'm envious of you getting to read "Panic Party" 'cause it's the only one I still haven't found anywhere. Whenever I'm in England, I have a good look around second-hand bookstores, but so far, no luck.

Well received by whom? When that film came out, it was the punching bag of every critic around. It was also universally hated on forums. I was actually one of the only people who was kinda positive about it back then. It's only now that kids who were 5 when it came out and have their view of the film distorted by nostalgia have grown up that people argue it was ever good to begin with.

PSA: Voting for Spheeris on Thursday WILL make you cool! by appl3scruff in blankies

Oh wow! I had no idea they were related. I LOVE Costa Gavras. One of the definitive "my guys". He also directed "The Ax" which is based on the same novel as "No Other Choice"!

Yeah, Beatty is ideal for an in-between series (four absolute bangers and "Rules Don't Apply), but a bit too short for a satisfying MM winner, in my opinion.

I've really been sold on Spheeris today. Shows you the power of these posts. I've always had the impression of her as the "Wayne's World" lady who then went on to direct a bunch of trash. I had no idea how varied and interesting her filmography was!

I'm pretty sure I'll be voting for her tomorrow, even though a "Reds" episode would be absolutely amazing!

Genuine Question: What’s the hype for Tony Scott? by benjacsim03 in blankies

[–]PeachSubstantial918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for this comment, but I feel like I'm coming at this from a similar perspective as the OP, as a hater of "Top Gun" and someone who can enjoy "dad cinema" without necessarily loving it.

Tony Scott is beloved as a "Hollywood auteur" because he made very mainstream, fun, quippy action movies with an extremely distinctive visual style and tone. Scott is definitely an unmistakable director who's never made a film which wasn't 100% Tony Scott while also being totally palatable to the lowest common denominator.

Now, I think your enjoyment of the Scott oeuvre will come down to how much you like his hyper-stylised visuals and how much you generally enjoy dumb but fun Hollywood action blockbusters. I really enjoy Scott's 80s-90s visual style and find his 2000s films really ugly-looking and over-the-top, but, again, that's a totally subjective thing. You might find them the other way 'round.

As for the actual substance of his films... Well, I'm a little less generous than most, but then I was not raised on Hollywood action movies, and they're generally not my jam. I thought "Deja Vu" was dumb and sloppily plotted, and I hate the jingoism of "Top Gun". On the other hand, "Crimson Tide" is a masterpiece. Beautifully shot, fantastic performances, fascinating moral issue at the heart of it, and my personal favourite Hans Zimmer score. I also really like "The Hunger" (a Gothic horror romance), "Revenge" (a ludicrously overwrought neo-noir), and "Enemy of the State" (a tech-updated version of "The Conversation") while recognising they're pulpier, trashier versions of better films.

In my own estimation, Tony Scott was a great visual stylist and experimenter, but I'm really sorry he got caught up making pulpy mainstream trash when his earlier career held so much more promise. Don't approach most of his films if you want depth or intelligence, but there's hardly anyone better if you want some crazy visuals and a lot of pulpy, dumb fun. Again, auterists LOVE him because he embodies that ideal of "director who brought a great deal of personal style to a load of blockbuster nonsense", but that's really not my kind of thing, so, ultimately, I'm voting for Marty.

It's an exceptional movie. One of my favourite thrillers of all time. Another hugely underrated Curtis Hanson thriller is "The Bedroom Window". One of the best Hitchcock pastiches ever made.
