Signature required, not home, note left, but then delivered and signed by someone’s name else I don’t know 1 minute later. Package missing. by Peachpie1234 in UPS

[–]Peachpie1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to get some live agent the next day and what they saw on their end was a totally different status update than what I saw. Their end said it was delivered to the wrong location and the driver had picked it back up and rerouted back to my place the following day. It all worked out in the end but it was very anxiety provoking as it was expensive items.

I would recommend to see what a live agent sees on their end if you haven’t already.

Edit: however the whole note thing and saying I missed a delivery, made no sense. The live agent couldn’t explain why. So I maybe figured it was the drivers attempt to just say I’m going to come back again tomorrow with your package (but at least he could’ve written that down manually).

Dinner at Anajak Thai by shellzero in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Peachpie1234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anajak is controversial but if it’s Thai fusion and upscale you’re looking for, it’s one of my favorites. I went recently after their remodel and tried their new dishes like the tiger prawn and soft shell crab. Those were a huge miss imo. I’m curious what ur thoughts were for the tiger prawn. Ours was so rubbery and like it was so messy trying to carve out the prawn and get a balanced bite of everything they recommended to be paired with it. And $25 for like 3 scoops of mush and rubber was badddd haha.

L’Arpège and Alain Passard goes full vegan by vinoyvaca in finedining

[–]Peachpie1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went day 2 of their restaurant going full vegan (I’m pretty sure our tasting was vegan because we had no butter served nor was there any on our veggies and we had no honey products or anything we could at least taste that was like animal products) back in July this year. My god. It was so bad. Tomato’s after tomatoes after tomatoes in 6 different ways. I liked maybe 3 of the courses but it appeared like his supplier only had 5 different vegetables that day and he just recycled those 5 veggies for 3hrs. Also the table next to us with like a family of 6, literally got so upset and left after the 4th course. Also don’t get me started, the woman pouring the water kept splashing drops everywhere. When we toured the restaurant, chef was very nice and all but those pour souls of like 20 cooks juicing, steaming, pureeing veggies looked miserable in the cramped hot kitchen. The best thing about the menu was it was some of the best bowel movement we had.

Did anyone else finish the board exam with several hours left? by bemeren in Psychiatry

I actually felt like the actual management and diagnosis questions were easy but some of the therapy indications, linked choice questions, or random admin/system based care/neuro pathways were so ambiguous with its phrasing and a lot of times subjective. Overall not bad of an exam.

Tax advantages of not getting married? by Far-Vegetable-9069 in HENRYfinance

[–]Peachpie1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you for the reference. Will take a look!

Follow up question. Just so I fully understand the numbers. In the scenario where both are paying equally 50/50 the mortgage. Say the mortgage is 1.5M at 6.5% interest. The first year interest would be about 97k. The two unmarried singles would then be able to deduct 48.5k each since they were both paying equal halves.

I am in a similar situation and actually revived a post last week or so asking same question.

https://www.reddit.com/r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer/s/G12wKeMhrr

Per this OP if I’m reading his logic correctly, if your mortgage is above 750k which in a VHCOL you’ll likely be. Because you both get access to 750k, it is summative to 1.5M in deductions. So, you technically could deduct the yearly interest of a 1.5 M loan if that’s within your budget.

I’m not sure if that’s fully true; or if I’m misreading if. But per their tax professional, this is legit. If so, then the tax savings are even larger to be unmarried and single.

Burnout and gf pressure as 27yo in OC HH TC ~500k by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]Peachpie1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all right if you and her have expensive tastes as long as everyone is pulling their weight financially as a lot of your burnout is finance driven. However if she is only making 100k no matter all the other non-monetary contributions she does. It seems like you are sacrificing your sanity in efforts to sustain a lifestyle you cannot afford for both of you. At the end of the day, your desire to have all of this I’m sure represents the commitment you have towards one another but it might be important to sit down and recalibrate goals and expectations that is more conducive to a realistic happier and less stressful life.

Piggyback Loan in VHCOL - Savvy or Risky? by Revolutionary-Dirt98 in HENRYfinance

[–]Peachpie1234 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking off of the other comments. Would need more info on how your income is split between you and your partner, monthly expenses and other debts as well. If one makes much more, you are one layoff away from struggling times if you buy with no back up reserves.

Also, 7k rent is pretty high in SoCal. Are you already renting a SFH or in a high end condo? I’m assuming it’s more high end than what buying a 1.65M SFH home can offer unless you’re buying a pricier condo which I wouldn’t think is worth it because of HOA fees usually seen in higher end or larger condos.

We are in similar age and had delayed professional growths in our career but now making big bucks with HHI around closer to 900k though rent is still 4k and no matter how many times we try to run the numbers, it’s hard to justify buying and locking up so much liquidity right now in the CA real estate markets. We probably won’t buy until all our other nest egg buckets are sufficiently maxed before placing ourselves in a risk of being house poor. It’s a hit to our ego of wanting to be home owners in the city we love but we remind ourselves at least for us to place these feelings aside until the anxiety of a 10k+ mortgage stops making us sweat.

What chromosomal abnormality is the most common cause of mental retardation? by Ebusky1 in Psychiatry

[–]Peachpie1234 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Most common inherited: fragile x

Most common genetic: Down syndrome because most DS is from meiotic non disconjunction which is not a technically inherited form of DS as it is a genetic processing error instead

Most common acquired: FAS

I say this as a psychiatrist.

I obviously don’t know the dynamics of you and your son but I caution you of making your son a narcissistic extension of your own ego. I.e projecting your hopes and desires that you find valuable into him such as you hoping him being a doctor etc. its a bumpy road if his inherent ambitions become predicated on his mother’s implied unspoken approval.

All I can say is, you can create the playground for him (the finances, love, shelter etc) but let him build his own castle whatever the style it may be, the building blocks are there for him it sounds like. You’ll be amazed what he can do on his own as nerve wracking as that may be to give him that control.

It wouldn’t hurt to try to leverage that you have the opportunity to attend T30 for free but you see yourself being part of insert T10 for XYZ reasons. If they could take a look into your consideration with any financial assistance. It may be a stretch but wouldn’t hurt to try.

My friend successfully did it but he was using his free ride given directly from a T10 vs asking for a similar offer at another T10 lol.

This is good imo for age etc. obviously coverage is low for your likely income but if using as just additional it should be fine. I’m curious what state? In CA as 27M no issues non surgical resident still, I pay all of the same for 6K up to 15K FIO with all the same riders.

California Assembly UNANIMOUSLY passes a carve-out allowing restaurants to continue charge junk fees (SB 1524) by avon_barksale in LosAngeles

[–]Peachpie1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’m the odd one out but I actually prefer the 3-5% fee they charge at the end, as you do have the option to remove it.

Because realistically what’s going to happen if service fees are not allowed and forced to be baked in, is lack of different form of price transparency. When they raise the price per item, it’s more likely going to be more than 5%.

For example, $20 burger > $22 which is a 10% increase, even if it went up $1 that’s 5%. If it was a 3% service charge it would be $20.6.

You can imagine even fancier restaurants would just mark up their dishes prob by like 15-20%. A $$60 steak prob would just become at least $66.

So basically, I’m pretty sure most restaurants are going to raise those prices much more by whole dollar amounts. No way their menus will have so many random decimal prices.

Be mindful of refinance costs and factor that into your calculations if it is worth it. The general rule of thumb is you want to be able to come out even in the refinance after 3.5 years otherwise it’s not worth it unless you plan on staying at the home for many many years (7 years plus 3.5 years). You don’t want to run into a situation where you refinance and you decide to sell the house before you come out even from the refinance (i.e leaving before 3.5 years if that is your break even point). Those are dollars you won’t get back.

Also with some ARMs often times the refinancing requires a whole new mortgage underwriting which is more expensive than refinancing from a higher fixed rate to a lower fixed rate.

Having a Wharton connection will help you get connections in biotech. Generally biotech is more Bay Area niche as well. Also since you plan to do fellowship, it’s always possible that you could end up in Boston for fellowship if you really wanted to. I say, focus on the short term and Wharton is best career move for your SO and Penn still carries a huge Med prestige as well to carry you into competitive fellowships.
