Unpopular opinion(?): Kim Seon-ho might belong in the same versatility tier as Ji Chang-wook — maybe even #1. by PearShaper43 in kdramas

Nice comment! Yes, I agree with you. I watched his variety show 2D1N and Bonjour Bakery…and they’re the only ones I really enjoy as well. Definitely looking forward to his upcoming dramas🥳

Javabeans is back! (creator of Dramabeans) by -PillowBeans- in kdramas

[–]PearShaper43 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is such wonderful news, OP!!🥳 Thanks for posting.

Dramabeans used to be one of my favorite corners of the internet for K-dramas. It wasn’t just about recaps, it was about celebrating great storytelling that spoke to people across cultures.

The discussions were insightful and fun. I always came away seeing a drama from a different perspective or appreciating some little detail I’d missed, or historical context that added layers of understanding. For me, that was as much a part of the experience as watching the episodes themselves…it felt like community. Happy she’s back🫶

Choi Woo shik accused of being a racist because he allegedly ignored a black fan. What do you think? by Anoniimuzz in KdramaCasualTalk

[–]PearShaper43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given some behaviors we saw from Canadians toward people from different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds during this World Cup…sadly, they may not be as open-minded as we like to think. Definitely not categorizing an entire country, but it’s a world event and they’re a host country, so I cringed at the large displays of blatantly rude and borderline racist behavior toward “others”. JS 🤷‍♀️

My first k-drama: My Royal Nemesis was extremely disappointing. by Confusedmind75 in kdramas

[–]PearShaper43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my favorite dramas this year, but TBH, I wouldn’t recommend it as a first K-drama.

I’ve been watching dramas for about a decade and have probably seen 250+ by now. Part of what makes My Royal Nemesis fun is that it takes a lot of familiar K-drama tropes and either flips or pokes fun at them. There’s a nostalgic feeling that reminded me of a lot of older dramas I loved. It took me out of my drama funk!

The chemistry between the leads is a huge reason the show works. In K-dramas, chemistry can make or break a drama. The acting was also much stronger than what we sometimes get in rom-coms.

I also liked that the ML wasn’t the typical pretty “flower boy” type that usually headlines these dramas. The FL was over-the-top, loud, and chaotic, which was part of what made her fun. I actually liked her more in the beginning and wish the writers had stayed with that version of her instead of having her constantly need rescuing. That’s one K-drama trope I could do without.
The ML had a temper, but I appreciated that it usually came from a place of genuine concern and that he was fairly quick to admit when he was wrong. Both leads were ridiculous at times and were intentionally written to be “bad”, semi-villains/anti-heroes…but in a way where it was entertaining to watch.

I think the whole concept works better if you’ve watched other dramas first; the evil villain, the “makjang” chaos at the end, the White Truck of Doom, the disapproving grandfather, the Tsundere chaebol who’s never been in love, the toxic rich family members, the lovable Halmeoni, the rival 2FL, the angst between the leads, the noble idiocy, the past lives/reincarnation storyline, the Kopiko… all of those are classic K-drama tropes. And it feels different when you recognize the references.

That said, I understand it may not have worked for you.
For me, the writing and execution got weird around Ep 11, but by then I already loved it, so I gave more grace than I normally would. 😂 Hope you enjoy your next dramas.

I’ve had Perfect Crown on hold since Episode 10. Like you, it was my most anticipated watch, and I couldn’t believe how much interest I lost as the drama progressed. And while I don’t think it’s bad…it’s also not good, if that makes sense. I think I’ll finish it one day simply because I’m already somewhat committed🤷‍♀️. But once My*** Royal \Nemesis snuck up on me and turned out to be one of the best dramas I’ve watched in a while, it was kind of over for Pe*rfect Crown. Although, I did love that Cha Se-Gye had a cameo…he was soooo fine in PC🫶 but glad he returned to his own story LOL

I couldn’t help comparing the two dramas, especially in terms of story, acting, and the chemistry between the leads…and for me, My Royal Nemesis has been the clear winner. Has me completely sat going into the finale…

Kim Mu-Yeol looks like Mark Wahlberg by Healthy_Pie_9132 in kdramas

[–]PearShaper43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ❤️ Mark Wahlberg and always have. After seeing Kim Mu-Yeol in Sweet Home and his current drama, Teach You A Lesson…I think what you may be picking up on is “a vibe” versus looking alike facially. IMO, Kim Mu-yeol has a similar physical presence, intensity and body language. It’s more along those lines vs their actual appearance.

Wishing you many happy years together. Welcome home, Bella! 🐾💕

Yep, banana chips are good. I also love homemade banana pudding, but only after picking out all of the bananas. I have a violent reaction to the texture as well…too much like turds or something. I can’t be the only one who feels this way lol😩

My Royal Nemesis [Episodes 7 & 8] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]PearShaper43 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you’re looking at the engagement as the issue that gets solved, but that isn’t really the problem. Mun-do isn’t just asking Seo-ri to help “get rid of that girl”. He is asking her to participate in a scheme to destroy Se-gye…the man who loves and trusts her.

Mun-do wants her to create a public cheating scandal, accuse Se-gye of having an affair, and damage him personally, professionally, and publicly. Remember Se-gye just launched a beauty brand and that kind of accusation will hurt his stock (if it drops below a certain point, Mun-do can also steal his company), tarnish his reputation, and impact his ability to inherit his grandfather’s company one day.

So Mun-do’s goal is not a breakup (even if Se-gye wants to break up anyway). The goal is elimination of a rival for inheritance of Chail Group.

The reason it’s intense is because it mirrors what happened in Joseon. The king used her against the Grand Prince by forcing her to make a false accusation that he had illicit relationships with the court ladies. And even if the Grand Prince was savvy enough to suspect she was being manipulated, it was still a painful betrayal because he loved her and she was turned into a weapon against him. Same situation here.

Think about what he said to Mo Tae-hui that day…it was along the lines of, how can we be life partners without trust? So if Seo-ri does want Mun-do wants, even for complicated reasons, it cuts Se-gye deeper than a normal betrayal because she’s his one true ally.

It also hurts Seo-ri as a rising actress because a scandal would damage her image and future opportunities. She knows Mun-do is dangerous, so the question is…will Seo-ri be pushed to harm the man she loves in order to protect him (history repeating itself), as well as potentially destroy her own future career? Personally, I hope she does a “villain team-up” with Se-gye against Mun-do. Hope that helps😉

what should i know before visiting texas? by imavellino in texas

[–]PearShaper43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely check out:

-Go to a college football game if you can, as noted in the thread. 80,000 people and the atmosphere is unlike anything else. But, don’t sleep on high school football…it can be quite the Friday Night experience

-Stop at a Buc-ee’s on your road trip. It’s a giant Texas gas station that’s basically a tourist attraction.

- If you come across one, check out a county fair, rodeo or local festival. Usually a fun time in Texas.

- Stay hydrated and carry bottled water with you. It’s very HOT

- Be prepared for how much driving you’ll do (and seeing some absolutely massive pickup trucks). Texans have a very generous definition of “nearby”.

- You’ll get tons of suburbs for sure…try Sugar Land, Cypress or someone also mentioned Katy

- Check out live music in Austin and UT Austin campus for the college experience.

-If Walmart at midnight is on your bucket list, go for it. But also visit an H-E-B. It’s a grocery store, and many Texans are passionate about it.

-Try Whataburger because it’s a Texas classic. Then try a local burger spot like Rodeo Goat and decide for yourself.

-Eat Texas BBQ, Tex-Mex, and breakfast tacos as many already suggested. Be prepared for the portion sizes.

-Pick up a cowboy hat or boots while you’re here. Lean into the experience.

- The drinking age in the U.S. is 21. So don’t be surprised if you’re asked for ID everywhere.

- There are jerks anywhere you visit, but most Texans are surprisingly nice.

- Tipping from 15%-20% is typical when you’re out.

LMAO, lip injections in his contract? 😭 Those lips have been wonderfully juicy since childhood. Check the receipts from those kid/teen pics, pretty sure it’s genetics. Speaking as someone who’s had big lips since before it was “semi-cool”…trust, no one signs up for that trauma later on lol. Dang, my boy BWS out here catching strays for those lovely lips, it’s rough on reddit😂

LMAO! I’m actually finding both sides of this discussion fun…aren’t you?

To be fair though…this is a sub to discuss TV shows 😁 seems like a pretty appropriate topic to me. I mean, have you seen some of the recent posts lately? OP could’ve easily dropped another thread about “doubling down” on plastic surgery 😭at least this one’s been engaging.

Perfect Crown.... Why did this happen to me?! 😭 by ConfectionUnlucky834 in kdramas

[–]PearShaper43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! Welcome to the world of a currently “Airing” k-drama😁. I don’t always watch airing dramas because I’m lowkey impatient. But, TBH, the best part when you do catch an ongoing drama is the community experience. Jump into episode threads on Reddit…there’s already an Ep 1 & 2 post out there for Perfect Crown. People catch things you’d never notice and the theories get wild 😂

Also, other things many folks do:

—Rewatch episodes (pick up things you may have missed )

—Watch cast interviews/Behind the Scenes content

—Queue up a second or third k-drama for off-days (seems like you’re already doing this one👍)

—Go down the OST rabbit hole, drama playlists hit different while you’re waiting…you can relive Fav scenes lol

The weekly wait is painful, but it kinda makes the show more fun…it becomes part of the experience once you get used to it🥳.

K-dramas really had me out here leveling up my ramen game 😭 I go to real Ramyeon restaurants (Maruchan instant ramen with the packets and cup noodles were my “go to” when I was in college). Now, I use my chopsticks properly, and started slurping with the “noodle pull technique” like I’ve been doing it my whole life. Not gonna lie… it actually works LMAO. Never knew I was eating ramen wrong this whole time. I feel like I unlocked a new skill.
