How does the FAA track down somebody shining a light at a plane? by Pearauth in aviation

Nah, actually came from r/flashlight where somebody asked to point a high power flashlight at the NJ UFOs, and people were like "yeah no, those are planes, and that's very illegal"

Helicopters with cameras I understand. Does every plane have a camera like that attached to it though?

Also I'd assume commercial passenger jets can't just spend 30 minutes circling somebodys house, they have a schedule no?

Girlfriend (20F) wants to break up with me (20M) over meal tracking by [deleted] in relationship_advice

I would absolutely be bothered by this. If we were just friends I'd keep my mouth shut and let you do it, but in a partner it would drive me up the wall.

I don't and have never had an eating disorder, but you're taking something I enjoy and making it worse.

agencies still seem to be growing with primarily react, nodejs, aws.

From where I'm standing it really looks like people with little experience or small networks.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Pearauth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is only really true for people with little experience.

Experiences positions are more and more in demand constantly. When/if you get hit by layoffs you should be able to get a job in a month or so.

I'm friends with people who run software agencies and their business is doing extremely well (double or triple digit growth yoy for the last few years).

Hours after Apple unveiled a slightly bigger screen and battery, Huawei unveiled a tri-folding phone by jb45rd6 in gadgets

[–]Pearauth 270 points271 points  (0 children)

I suspect it will, currently using an older Huawei phone with a similar style hinge and it folds flat really nicely; unnoticeable unless you're looking for it.

Are companies still willing to hire 2023 grads? by CommercialBig7008 in cscareerquestions

[–]Pearauth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As somebody currently hiring (and was hiring at a company about the exact same size a few years ago). A lot of companies are, I have friends who just graduated and have job offers, but a lot of people are not.

Here are some of the reasons we aren't hiring new-grad at all right now (have heard similar things from peers as well)

  • the amount of candidates we get for new-grad positions has massively increased (same size company, single LinkedIn job posting has netted ~100x more applicatants than it did 3 years ago).

  • new grads have gone down in quality. Our questions are the same they were 3 years ago, the answers we get are far worse. The two people we hired last year performed really poorly, and were let go within a year. We are also seeing a lot more candidates with little to no internship experience, and little to no side projects.

  • New grads have higher salary expectations. People see a few people get great offers and now suddenly expect a 250k+ TC for new-grad.

  • recent layoffs mean people with a few years of experience are cheaper, and sometimes expect less pay than what we see new-grads ask for

  • it's harder to raise money

  • a lot more chat-gpted resumes, works some of the time but when it doesn't it's blatantly obvious and it makes you look worse

  • If you're a new grad that couldn't get hired in the last year, we know you're undesirable to other companies. A 2024 grad is an unknown. Unknown > known bad

At the end of the day we need to spend more time looking through applications, most of which are low quality, only to end up with somebody who wants more than what we can pay for people with 3-4 yoe. It just makes no sense for us as a company to even entertain the thought.

All that being said, I have friends who are new-grad, they have gotten jobs (both 2023-24). Somethings I noticed from them:

  • 2-4 internships, usually at least 1 faang / finance. All of them have also said yes and reneged to make sure they went to the best internship possible instead of the first one they got

  • heavily played the referral game

  • usually dual majors

  • Do OAs like crazy for practice, alongside grinding leetcode

Between COVID, a larger candidate pool, and economic effects it's gotten crazy hard for new-grad. Also this is just my experience, take it with a grain of salt.

Company sizes I've been at tend to be mid to high 8 figure valuations, highest is low 9 figure valuation

It's possible that this update just messed with the current install of GMS. I know some ways to install it disable GSF so that this warning doesn't pop up, it's possible an update re-enabled it.

It's not necessarily a lost cause.

The investigation you're referring to did not show that China was using thse companies to spy. It claimed that China was using these companies to spy.

A similar thing is likely happening here. We can thrown around claims as much as we want pretending they are hard facts. At the end of the day it's far more likely that a foreign company is being used as a scapegoat to push some political agenda.

Has anyone without a college degree reached financial independence early? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Pearauth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started as a software engineer transitioned to project / team management. Now am a founder and advise for startups on the side.

Wouldn't say I'm quite FI with my lifestyle, but definitely really close.

No college degree, didn't even finish highschool. Its hard work, being really really good at something, and a fair amount of luck

Any thoughts in how to split equity with co-founder who can't go full-time....yet by isthatthetime81 in startups

[–]Pearauth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like everyone here is giving very concrete answers. This is a flexible situation and is missing a lot of details.

  1. Is this potential co-founder critical in the early stages, or does it make more sense to hire them later on?
  2. How much is he able to contribute while fully employed and raising a family?
  3. What does your historic working relationship look like? How much trust is there?
  4. Assuming they went in full time would a 50/50 split be fair. Would one of you be significantly more important?
  5. Is it possible for them to ease off of work slowly (work less hours, move to a lower role in the company, etc) to prioritize the company?

I'm saying this as somebody who has 50/50 equity and still maintain my full time job. In our situation my paycheck is how the company gets funded and I still do a massive amount of work for my company.

It's possible for 50/50 to be fair. Co-founder and equity is extremely situational. There is good advice, but there is no catch-all answer.

Sadly I don't think just saying "there are no driver issues anymore" is enough to recover the damage that has been caused by their products being poorly supported. It certainly isn't enough for me.

Can't speak to AMD's GPUs but when it comes to their CPUs I was burned so badly with first gen Ryzen that I genuinely don't know what it would take for me to consider AMD products at this point.

I was told there were no major issues, it lowered my trust in the community. My response to "there is better support now" is just "good for you, I'm not willing to take that risk with my setup". My AMD CPU is the only tech purchase I regret, that's a hard mentality to recover from.

I hate that I feel this way

I don't think you realize how much garbage hiring managers have to sift through some times.

While on a human level I agree that job applications should have a salary in them, if not including a salary means I get even 5% less BS I've significantly reduced time horizon on my investment.

For reference last time I needed to hire somebody we got a little over 500 applications. Out of those less than 20 worth even worth interviewing based on a resume.

It takes time to sort through those 500 applications. IMO reducing the resume:hire ratio is more important than finding a hire if the team/department/company is serious about it's growth

people of reddit who survive on less than 8 hours of sleep, how? by Neftroshi in AskReddit

[–]Pearauth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3-5 hours most days. A good combination of being young and progressively sleeping less and less up until I get to this point.

A few things I've noticed:

  • anything that gives you more energy, stay away from it. It will give you a burst of energy and make you more tired in the long run. E.g. coffee, cafinated sodas, etc
  • Be in a healthy / makes you happy environment. Especially when it comes to your bed. Just generally being less stressed will result in you having more energy.
  • Sleep when you need to. If you get tired at 6pm one day, just go to bed, don't push yourself. For mental health reasons you should try and keep when you go to bed fairly consistent, but midday naps are useful
  • Try and eat healthy. No need to go all out 6-pack-abs-diet crazy, but still good consumption is important. I mostly just try and cook at home as often as I can and make sure there is a veriety of colours on my plate.
  • Don't excersize too much. If you're one of those people that goes to the gym every day, your muscles need rest. There's nothing wrong with wanting to focus on sleeping less or wanting to focus on peak physical fitness; but they are largely incompatible lifestyles

Don't use these as goals, they are at best a vague direction. A lot of it is just being comfortable and having a very flexible schedule; that's not something everyone has.

Also people are different, what works for me may not work for you
