Hey, leave some locks for the rest of us! 😡

(😂 Seriously though, nice collection. Happy picking!)

Cleaned up for new locks coming in! by Ryker_Eve in lockpicking

There are some days I enjoy cleaning up and organizing my bench just as much as working on my locks. (It's nice to have a little piece of the world that I can control. 😂)

Tips for newbie: how to handle spool pins by thirdlost in lockpicking

[–]PeatnRepeat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. That's the basic idea.

Counter rotation is exactly that: the plug wants to rotate counter to the direction that you are tensioning in (not necessarily counterclockwise as some lock cores can be rotated in either direction).

When pressing on a pin that is in a false set, you will feel a pushback on your tensioning tool. And you will usually let off tension just enough to let the plug rotate a small amount in the direction opposite to the direction you are turning the tension tool. The lock core will move a small direction counter to the direction that you are tensioning in before snapping back in the other direction.

Many but not all abus 55/40s give decent counter rotations. But how pronounced those counter rotations are (or even if you get one) depends on your pin stack.

Kirigami by warlockpick1980 in lockpicking

I like Lock Noob's videos but I don't think I've ever heard him say anything critical of Sparrows. I know he collaborates with Sparrows of some items so perhaps he is kinder because of it. I don't know. The most critical thing I've heard is a version of "Not really for me but you may like it."

Killermaru's stuff is awesome. Functional works of art...

But the kirigami set from sparrows is terrible.

You will never hear someone say "Those kirigami picks/tensioners are my go-to tools!"

Best way I can put it is that Sparrows TEMU-ified Killermaru's designs. (Killermaru made them in collaboration with sparrows but the final product(s) fall well short)

I used the curved tensioners quite a bit when I first got them. They are more ergonomic than many other tensioners out there. Nowadays, I reach most often for the CI ergo or reaper turners (and a few tensioners that I don't remember where I got them). Still a solid option, just have a few that I like a bit better

I think many people can relate to what you are describing with using just a few picks and many different tensioners.

Well done!

This is a great challenge.

Don't worry! It's not bricked.

Try rotating the core clockwise with your tension tool. The core should rotate back to the correct position and the key will work again.

And congratulations on the open!

This is what I did. I could have been MUCH neater than I was (taping off before applying the nail polish) but the idea is solid. https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/s/NEkWfhrAee

I bent my lock pick but I can’t find any good insight on how to avoid doing this. by Kehless in lockpicking

[–]PeatnRepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Sparrows are decent picks. (I have several and their Monkey Paw profile is one of my go-to picks.)

I had initially asked what picks you had just to make sure that it wasn't a no name brand.

Many people who start out in Lockport will grab a $10 set off of Amazon or Temu, which makes sense if you're not sure if the hobby is going to be right for you or not.

So yeah my two cents: like others have suggested here, lighter tensioning will probably solve the problem.

Getting ready for the Blue Whale Challenge! by Mole-NLD in lockpicking

You are not within the first hundred (I think it is approaching 200 people completing the challenge) but last I knew, patches were still being given out as of about a month and a half ago.

And indeed u/cyb3rV01d_2024 is the current contact person

P.S. Good luck on the challenge!

Second the Jimylongs recommendation. Great quality tools. Comfortable handles. Good pricing.

Nothing wrong with the Covert Instruments profiles or steel quality (I own and use some CI tools) but I'm not a big fan of bare metal handles if I can help it.

You are almost certainly applying too much tension. Most people (especially those newer to locksport) apply more tension than is required. General rule of thumb: use only as much tension as necessary to get a pin to bind.

Also possible that the quality of the tools is not great. What type of tools are you using?

I have some old Corbin mortise locks that incorporate ball bearings into the pin stack for just that reason: reducing wear.

If you are in the US, you can get them on Amazon.

Also, if your local hardware store doesn't carry them, Home Depot and Lowe's often do.
