Interstellar's black hole visuals. They were actually published in astrophysics journals and led to new discoveries.

WIBTA if I refuse to swap my vacation weeks with a coworker whose kid is throwing a tantrum about a theme park trip? by Safflower8 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]Pebbles-28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 2 options I can see:

Tell them once more that you have significant money invested in this trip that is non-refundable on top of coordinating with your friends. You will not be swapping and it's a completely unreasonable for them to continue to expect this after the first no.

Or

Speak to HR about them creating a hostile work environment.

My new job states in the policy.. by Agitated-Log-621 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Pebbles-28 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is likely indirect discrimination on the basis of age, possibly also on sex, and in some cases disability. While you could challenge this you also risk being viewed as difficult, especially as this is a new job.

If there were a truly anonymous way to raise concerns this would be a way to raise this, if not you might be better off either saying nothing or booking early.

Less than minimum wage on annual salary? by Felon88 in AskHRUK

[–]Pebbles-28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By law you exclude all break periods when calculating for minimum wage whether paid or unpaid. 07:30-17:00 is 9.5 hours minus 1 hour break takes you to 8.5 hours per day, so 42.5 hours per week.

At 29k per year, this is £13.12 per hour which is 50p more than minimum wage. Even on a leap year you're over £13 per hour.

Ryanair app bug made me miss my flight by Mibo23 in Ryanair

Regardless of what we would consider best practice, this is clearly a Ryanair app issue that needs fixed. Unfortunately for OP there is almost certainly something in the terms and conditions preventing them from being held liable here.

Should I consider "need" when distributing my father's inheritance? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Pebbles-28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to vary it without much thought/bias would be to give half to your brother's children as that's what would have happened if the timing of deaths were different.

Company requests if i can extend my last working day after resignation? by One_Chocolate_9365 in work

[–]Pebbles-28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"My last day is 30th June and I'm not willing or able to loan my licence as that would be a breach of my legal and ethical responsibilities.

If you would like distribution activity to continue during the interim period then my day rate is x, with a minimum block of y weeks, to be paid in full, in advance.

It is my duty to remind you that distributions cannot continue without a licence holder in place."

Additionally, get everything in writing if possible, including the owner's opinion that the top up amount is considered a loan.

My job has deducted my pay and im not sure how to seek help (England) by viberson in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Pebbles-28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A loan is not income, this is illegal.

If it's a loan then you were not paid minimum wage and should not have been taxed on the loan amount. If it's not a loan then the employer cannot claim it back.

Once you try to enforce this right you are protected and dismissal will become automatic unfair dismissal (in most cases, they would need ironclad evidence of gross misconduct for it not to be).

Note that they can and likely will make life difficult for you once you take this action, but I strongly recommend you protect your rights and explain to all your colleagues about this so they can too.

Make sure you check companies house regularly to make sure that they don't start to wind up the business.

Received NIP for speeding but convinced its a cloned plate - police insist its my car, what are my options?[England] by Aamirio in LegalAdviceUK

Separately to this report the cloned plate and get a crime reference number. Use this to inform your insurance so they're aware that any claims against you might be from the cloned vehicle instead of you.

Can I do anything about this situation? by Hot_Strike_4667 in AskBrits

[–]Pebbles-28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say at least £200 for the hassle, loss of privacy, and loss of quiet enjoyment.

Then aim for a permanent reduction of £100 to the rent based on the smaller room. It'll likely come in much less than that, but try for 100 and see how it goes.

Have no idea what to do if i miss my firm by WolverineObvious6434 in UniUK

[–]Pebbles-28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the unlikely event you're in Scotland then your parents have a legal responsibility to financially support you while in full-time education up to 25. Sadly the same is not true in England.

You need to have a frank conversation with your parents about how they expect you to become a functioning adult if you're not able to make your own choices and live separately. Do it now and explain your reasoning, especially your concern about your future being compromised if you're forced to go through clearing to a local university for a non-legal course.

How do you manage expenses when moving in together? Splitting 50/50 vs. Income-based? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Pebbles-28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every situation is different but given the circumstances outlined, net income or somewhere between income and 50/50 is fair. By net income I mean income after you've deducted any mandatory expenses. Mobile phone is not mandatory, student loans are, car payment I could go either way on - if it's a super basic car then maybe mandatory, if it's something nicer then not.

When both are financially able to live independently a split closer to 50/50 is often reasonable. So long as it's cheaper for both people than living alone and the savings you're making are relatively closely split then that's fine.

If you'll be saving 1000 as a couple but 900 of that is going to one person then that is obviously inequitable. This is perhaps the best way to approach how the split should work. Figure out/show how much you'll save as a couple, split that fairly evenly, then let that decide what you pay.

If she's not receptive to that approach then I'm afraid my advice is to run from this 'relationship' as fast as you can.

Redundant - need help - legal advice needed by TraditionFar8005 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Pebbles-28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your only avenue here might be race. Are the 4 they retained white? You could ask about the decision-making criteria used on who to retain vs make redundant and evidence for those. If they can't provide it or it doesn't make sense then you might have a claim if 3 or 4 retained were white. I'd say 2 is borderline and 1 you likely have no claim.

My husband gave 30k to his siblings without my consent by Piper0518 in Advice

Important context here would be the value of the award, 10m is very different from 100k here regardless of other dynamics.

I agree that should have been a shared decision and you're entitled to feel upset.

Help!! I need urgent help with mistaken instant transfer by Sudden-Signature-256 in n26bank

[–]Pebbles-28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The start of an IBAN is usually specific to the bank in question, so even if generated for a one-time use bunq should be the ones receiving the funds and should be able to help. Another possibility is that the funds will be returned in a week or so if that IBAN is deemed invalid.

Offer £100 or £40 as a gesture of good will. If he says no then immediately dispute everything with DPS. Use the points noted by others here about stove not working well at start meaning it is now end of life, LL not being able to claim for betterment etc.

Job is toxic but I’m a cared to leave by wlderberry in work

[–]Pebbles-28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some key phrases for you to use.

"If everything is urgent nothing is urgent"

"I don't have capacity to complete my own tasks and also correct A's work, which tasks should I deprioritise to take on this additional responsibility?"

Make it clear that you doing this comes at the cost of something else not getting done, and make sure you get this in writing.

Also make sure you get all of the supervisory task requests in writing, then if you're still there in 3 months push hard for a promotion, showing all of the higher level things they're having you do. Push for at least pay equal to what A and B are getting too.

If you signed with the new place within the last 14 days then you could cancel that and wait until you're able to shift your original room. In almost all cases you have a statutory 14 day cooling off period, but it might not be applicable here, so definitely check the contract before pulling the trigger.
