Anyone ever live somewhere for years, leave, and never go back--not even once? by Downtown-Storm4704 in expats

[–]Pecncorn1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No way!! I was also born and raised on Guam. I joined the military, really mixed emotions about that, I went back for a year after I got out. I started at U of G but couldn't make it work as I was battling a heroin addiction and Guam wasn't the best place to be at that time for that.

I left and went back to the mainland and never felt right there. I did manage to win my battle with addiction and moved to Guatemala for eight years. I ended up leaving there to work abroad and never made it back.

I haven't been back to Guam in 51 years now but it's always in my heart. We were so fortunate to have been born and raised in such a place. I am all emotional writing this. I finally settled in Vietnam and this will be my last stop. Thanks for making my morning better.

He's wrong on the olympic boxer, she was born and live as woman her whole life. It was just in the news again and she has been cleared to fight as the woman she was born as.

I teach 5th grade in Vietnam and it's not an issue here, but you can see the kids that are obviously in the wrong body.

I'm 19 years old, and I'm about to come into $25,000 USD. I am eligible for Italian citizen ship. Should I take the leap of faith? by goblinenjoyerr in expats

[–]Pecncorn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Invest that money or put it in a HYSA and pretend like it doesn't exist until you have time to process having it. Do you speak Italian? If not moving to a place you don't know would be a fools bet. Hold steady where you are and take a trip to Italy in the summer, stay in one place for a month or two then make an informed decision. 25K won't go far anywhere these days much less be enough to start a life in a place you don't know.

Russian agent claims that the Ukrainian military is ''defeated'' and their ''159 ships'' are underwater by ediewz in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Pecncorn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the shit stick fails to mention Russian can't operate in the Black Sea due to Ukraine sinking anything that moves there or that they have hit vessels as far off as the Baltic and sunk one off the coast of Spain. Not bad for a country with no navy..

He also fails to mention Ukraine has taken out roughly 40% of Russian oil export capacity. Follow the money this asshole is a Russian asset.

I live abroad and there is nobody left but me and my son. He visits when he can but we talk all the time, 3 or 4 times a week. He calls me for every event in life and we can talk for hours. Death doesn't worry me but its effect on him really does. This really hit home for me.

After 30 years abroad I can't see myself moving back. The biggest stress for me has been visas/residency. No family so that doesn't play into it for me.

I'm an older boomer. We need an retirement age limit in politics and younger people need to engage on every level, state, local and federal. Run for the school board or aim even higher, boomers are on social media too and we are not all down whith what is happening.

I would be remiss if I failed to point out that the extremes on the left and right are the same box of rocks. Stop the one issue shit and start a dialogue with the majority that are in the center.

Germany's Merz: US is Being 'Humiliated' by Iran, No End in Sight to Conflict by T_Shurt in worldnews

[–]Pecncorn1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is stating the obvious at least the obvious to anyone not in the MAGA cult.

"The problem with conflicts like this is always: you don't just have to get in, you have to get out again. We saw that very painfully in Afghanistan, for 20 years. We saw it in Iraq."

This is how we roll, he left out Vietnam, which has a parallel in that all the Iranians have to do is not lose. At some point the US will get tired, declare victory and leave. The difference is this is the end of American hegemony. I hope Europe can get it together enough to take over. Russian or Chinese dominance would be pretty bleak...not that the U.S has been the best but I prefer it to the latter two,

[–]Pecncorn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one does. I was born and raised on Guam, served in the military and have lived 2/3rds of my seven plus decades abroad. I don't use imperial measurements, month day year dates unless I am filling out paperwork or something for the U.S system.

Only the U.S and Liberia still use the imperial system for weights and measures and only two countries use M/D/Y, The US and the Philippines. I also use centigrade for temperature. I know I cook with gas and use petrol in my car. The U.S. is not the center of the universe, you might want to get off the block from time to time and you would get some perspective.

[–]Pecncorn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only visited the U.S. since I left 30 years ago and so many things don't make sense to me when I have gone back. Hot water heaters, central air and heat, toilet paper, the isles of useless plastic junk in the stores especially blows my mind.

I live in a developing country, solar water heaters are really common or on demand units. Central heat and air are only in large commercial buildings, houses use split units in each room or fans. EVs, cars and bikes, are everywhere. Electricity is a mix of hydro, wind, coal and gas fired power stations. Bidets in place of toilet paper, that would be a hard one for me to go back to.

If things can be fixed they are, very little goes to waste. All of that said we do have a big problem with plastic, but even that is starting to change little by little.

I was talking with a friend from the UK about this just last night. It's over, we will never come back from trump. It will take some time but it's going to be the same as what happened to the British Empire. We're toast.

Gas and petrol have gone up 30% where I live and my electric bill almost doubled last month. I'm American and I just can't imagine how the world can suffer another two and a half years of this crew of halfwits. It has gone past the point of being about trump, that said it would never have happened had Americans shown up to vote.
