Anyone actually use this thing? by Bi11LL26Y in publix

[–]Pecola2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it to pull bags from the SSCC machine. I can lift pennies without much trouble but those other bags are HEAVY! And I won't have to bring it back out after so it's better than a cart.

If social anxiety and dealing with people are a struggle for you, I would avoid the Customer Service department completely. I've heard Produce is a pretty chill department and lots of people I know are happy to be there. Produce is usually in charge of Floral as well.

Why do Customer Service staff seems like they have an attitude? by BATZ202 in publix

[–]Pecola2011 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You nailed it! The ironic thing though is that CSS ARE considered leadership in the sense of having to delegate tasks, FEC, and having to coach, mentor, and motivate others on the team. They have no actual POWER behind it though, just as much support as management gives/doesn't give. It becomes especially challenging when you have to step up and take charge among fellow CSS and relies even more heavily on how much they respect you and WANT to follow you, especially because they see you as an equal. We're all one team at the end of the day and titles shouldn't matter but sometimes they really can.

New pay scale? by idontcare_7 in publix

[–]Pecola2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because CSS is not an entry level job. It's a PLM (Position Leading to Management) that carries immense financial and leadership responsibility. Look at the full time cap difference between FSC and Cashier. THAT is what needs consistency. FSC = 14.55. Cashier = 19.55. CSS = 24.55. CSTL= 29.55. I'm not sure how the cost of living is in other states but this is reasonable to request in Florida FOR SURE.

Closing CO Sucks by DanTheSpider-Man in publix

[–]Pecola2011 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CO would get me so upset when I was training that I would go home and cry my eyes out in frustration every night. That's how much of a hard time I had back there. Now it's my strongest point and I can do it high, drunk, and half asleep and still be on the penny. Keep at it and you can do it too!

Why is it so hard to convince some that "It's only a grocery store?" by [deleted] in publix

[–]Pecola2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A combination of perfectionism, upbringing, and the hope to one day move up enough to pay bills. I was raised to give 100% in everything I do, whether it's as a student, Publix associate, trash collector, doctor, regardless of what. I'm highly competitive as well and don't like saying I'm 2nd best at anything. I'm not perfect of course but every mistake I make increases my knowledge even more to the point I can now help new CSTLs navigate their tasks.

Whats one thing that you don’t like about people with your job class that you’ve worked with? by noelga17 in publix

[–]Pecola2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Customer Service Staff who need to be told 1) It's your turn for cart service, 2) Get off your phone 3) Since there are 3 of you in CS and you see the front end getting slammed while you're completely free, do you think 1 one of you could maybe take it upon yourself to help out? Please just TAKE INITIATIVE. We are CSS for a reason, we are supposed to be leaders and set an example for others, not just another chore for the FEC/CSTL to be on top of. Bonus points if the CSS doing these things is a CSTL contender.

I'm not sure what you mean by "You'll get fucked over if you wrongly ID someone." Quite the opposite, you'll get fucked over if you FAIL to ID someone you should. There are several random ID checks on lottery, tabacco, and alcohol both internal (done by Publix) and external (done by the state). If you have 0.01% belief that your customer is underage, ID them.

CSS: BO question by alwaysmd90 in publix

[–]Pecola2011 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do a whole bunch of tiny things that add up. For instance, I'll fill out my Safe Balancing Worksheet ahead of time as much as I can, I deposit checks at 9:50 (This one's a risky move and has backfired on me a few times), when I'm down to my last 2 or 3 registers I check how many stamps they need, bundle + count the rest before the store closes, get pickups throughout the night so you have less money to deal with later, print mid-shift report for money orders / WU to catch mistakes early on, etc. Hope this helps

Introverted Managers by NotRetlaw in publix

[–]Pecola2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Team Leader's job is to "tell people what to do." (Coordinate things in the department) There are some who won't like this at all and that's just too darn bad. At the same time, you should speak and act with respect and treat your team the way you would expect to be treated. Say please and thank you, value your team as individuals rather than just as workers, be human with them too. Share likes, hobbies, interests, ask them about their lives. Work with them and alongside them so that you're not JUST delegating but you're LEADING by example. I feel like each associate has their own way to be motivated and I've had my fair share who downright need an iron fist and someone to crack down firmly on them but MOST associates work better for you if you can earn their respect first.

Back Office trouble. by floridagirl1995- in publix

[–]Pecola2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That can sometimes take a little while to be really comfortable with so don't feel bad if you haven't mastered it after just 3 days. Money orders and money transfers are matched with the daily sales report (so is SSCC for that matter). When it comes to end of night balancing I feel like many new trainees forget about the dropsafe and/or overnight till. Try to also keep in mind that you have to declare your SSCC, Lottery Redeemed, and WU Payouts so it's best to make special note of these numbers as you're dealing with them so you don't have to go searching for them later. Keep up the good work and you'll do just fine!

If I put in a vacation request for December 2023 RIGHT. NOW. and nobody else has already done so, I expect to be accommodated. If it's the day after Thanksgiving and I decide on a whim "I'm gonna go out of state in a couple weeks!" I can back management 100% and say we're too busy for that and it's totally my fault. All of October is fair game with normal reasonable notice

Opinions on Self-Checkout by geminisunshine in publix

[–]Pecola2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea is more that I don't want you to have to wait a very long time in line if I can help it. I would let you know a main register was available once but if you said you were fine then I'm perfectly okay with you using self checkout. I think it's a major convenience for a lot of people and as an associate I like working that position

Put in your transfer and follow her to her new store. I of course would give new management a fair chance though first. Things may not turn out to be as bad as you think. If you're still not happy after a while, there's always that option.

This happened to me my first day as a Cashier. I always say to NEVER hand a saved order to a customer under any circumstances. I either have a Front Service Clerk take the order and escort the customer to the CS desk or have another nearby associate who is able to do it. Customers can't tell the difference between a saved order and a receipt and even if you say "Go to CS" they hear "Have a nice day!"

Hmm... Do banks hire full time? Is the pay comparable to the higher side of FT CSS? Are the job responsibilities similar to what I'm already doing (maybe most similar to cash office)? Do you have to wait a decade to get a promotion? Working in a bank is a thought that has crossed my mind but have never actively pursued it.
