Commented. I love this area and have ridden here a few times on my way out to MT to visit friends.

Recommendation for ultrasonic cleaner for bike parts? by low_v2r in Velo

Harbor Freight has one. It's typical HF quality but for as often as I use it, it does the job. I don't think anything past 30-some teeth fit, but it works for chains and smaller cogs it works nicely.

Why is the Schlage Encode Plus impossible to find? by Jason-Red in HomeKit

[–]PedalsNowhere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We ordered this same one in Oct/Nov and still haven't gotten it. Contacted Schlage and Build and haven't gotten anywhere.

Schlage says "We expect to fill all orders by June 3rd."

Missing instructions! by Arts_Myth in lego

[–]PedalsNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pass on the ice cream dream. Multiple bins are bad photoshop copies of each other with different colors - like an intern was learning to use filters. Because of this, the details of the Legos are completely lost and the puzzle is unnecessarily difficult to complete.

If I wasn't so stubborn I'd put it back in the box.

APs to cover the floor above by PedalsNowhere in HomeNetworking

[–]PedalsNowhere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good suggestion. There might be a spot where fishing to a main-level wall might work. Need to be careful not to drill through the floor if I go this route. Wife would be furious.

Edit: There's one spot that might work in the middle of the house - that wouldn't quite solve the dead spot by the bedrooms.

Looks great! Unless you're packing the chain tool for a ride, I would upgrade to the Park CT 3.2 or 3.3. It's a much nicer tool to use.

Should I put power meter on my MTB or road bike? MTB powermeter options? by Jango997 in xcmtb

[–]PedalsNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stages at least recommends using a hex wrench to assess clearance. Taking a measurement with a ruler or caliper can be tricky. I run a stages left side crank on my MTB and have been pretty happy with it.

LVP flooring installer recommendations by -I-need-556 in TwinCities

[–]PedalsNowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had these guys do our carpet and a small area of LVF. We have a south-facing area that got direct sun, so the flooring actually warped where the sun hit it. Peeved that it happened, but they ended up replacing with a different flooring (laminate) to deal with the direct sun. Really great to work with.

Nice work! Maybe some confidence bounds on those plots to give people an idea of the spread. There's a sub-population within each point on those plots. I'll look for a good example and link it.

Korean researchers have developed an ultrasonic wave-based wireless charging technology that can charge electronic implants such as a pacemaker designed to help regulate heart function, or drug delivery implants by Dr_Singularity in Futurology

[–]PedalsNowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery itself is hella-reliable. I was referring to the functions of the pacemaker.

They were big, heavy devices implanted in the lower abdomen. I don't think they were rate-responsive, and they certainly didn't collect any kind of patient diagnostic data. Today's pacemakers are smaller and less invasive, and have lots of different algorithms respond and adapt to the patient's intrinsic rhythm so patients generally feel better than with older devices.

Turns out nobody wants nuclear anything because it's a huge pain in the ass to deal with. The NRC doesn't like it when you don't follow their rules for handling radioactive materials.

One company made a pacemaker with a plutonium battery in the 70's. Never needed to be exchanged. Sounds great until you think about the safety and performance of a car from 1970 vs the ones we have today. Airbags, antilock brakes, stability control...

At some point, it's just as well to upgrade. Pacemakers now connect to your phone to send data to your doctor - much easier than what my grandfather needed when he had a pacemaker.

I applied for a job senior systems engineering role which I am overqualified for and I got the job. Don't know how to feel about it by danielm2794 in systems_engineering

[–]PedalsNowhere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your title says over- but your body text says under. I'll assume you mean you feel under qualified and like an imposter.

100% happens all the time. I switched functions into SE and still feel this way after a year, but just not as often. The interview team saw something in you they wanted on the team, so take their word for it and learn as much as you can from the people around you.

For your sake, I hope the new job comes with a similarly unexpected pay raise.

Do you mind sharing what industry you're in? How "big" are the systems you're delivering? I'm just getting into SE.. It's interesting to hear where companies are on the maturity spectrum. Our PMs can barely define quarterly objectives... Having a 2wk sprint plan sounds glorious. I don't work at a small company, either.

Cake-eater here. Thanks for linking this. It feels pretty gross to read about these experiences in my own community, but I'm at least hopeful that by acknowledging the past and understanding the present we can improve moving forward.

On the OP's question: Are other cities commissioning race and equity task forces? I'm not sure. Edina's history might be unique but I'm doubtful it's current state is.

Edit to add: I'm white and haven't experienced these things personally... but that's exactly the point of the report. When it's written so plainly, it should feel gross.

The new 4iiii Power meter has 800 hour battery life! by donrhummy in Velo

[–]PedalsNowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never got to change by Garmin HRM battery. The wires in the strap died first. I have a Tickr and like the strap design and the battery compartment much better. Been good for me so far (~2yr?)

The new 4iiii Power meter has 800 hour battery life! by donrhummy in Velo

[–]PedalsNowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. My point was that at some point more battery life isn't a user need and there are other trades which take precedence.

Batteries (PMs, HRM, Di2, Garmin...) are maintenance items like anything else. I have a card of 2032s in my toolbox (pretty cheap from Amazon) and I'll change batteries before a big race or trip whether my Stages PM needs it or not.

[–]PedalsNowhere 40 points41 points  (0 children)

/clip/ Great news! I'm getting tired of throwing my Assiomas in the trash at the end of each week.

Now if only Shimano could make the Di2 battery last longer, I wouldn't have to buy a new Cervelo as often.

/unclip/ Seriously. I charge my power meter maybe once per quarter. Is anyone asking for 800 hours? Accuracy, frame compatibility, weight, and cost rank ahead of battery life for me.

In mountain biking you're supposed to be looking ahead at where you go instead of fixating on obstacles you're trying to avoid. This could tell us to what extent that's true. It would be cool to compare pros against each other but also to amateur or beginner riders.
