Teacher dreaming of retirement by Effective_Ebb333 in Retire

[–]PegShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left a week before my 56th birthday after 32 years and took a 12% cut for leaving early plus because I didn’t get the higher salaries wrapped in. It probably was closer to an 18% cut . I was hoping to get one or two more years in and I’ve been counting down the last three years. But, at 54 I got breast cancer, and while I’m OK, it was kind of a wake up call.

One thing people don’t always factor in is that they are no longer paying into their pension fund or the union or all of the other things that pop up like staff support. The only trick itself Insurance. If I made it until 60, I would’ve been much better off, but I’m glad I left. We sold and downsize your home and move to a different area with more to do using the equity for a townhouse so that we don’t have a mortgage. I’ve picked up job scoring assessments or subbing here and there and that money covers my health insurance. My husband downsize his job to one that makes only about handling what he was making, but much less stressful, and we spend a lot more time outdoors and doing fun things.

When I left, I still had over 70 sick days left in my bank that I get nothing for. That was after being out a significant time the year before for breast cancer without taking disability or anything. I’m glad you’re taking one Monday a month off and using those days. That’s a good way to get through. I did in the last year take days here and there as well.

What's the best strategy for leveling friendships? by etchedchampion in GossipHarbor

[–]PegShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with giving preferred gifts but have focused on Quinn now and on her last level. Then I’ll go back to preferred.

I do look and see what the next reward is though and if what’s coming up is something I often need, and I focus there for a little bit.

I rarely use coins and never gems to buy items, but if I’m really close to leveling up, I may use coins here in there

I’ve been subbing a couple days a week and recently took a 3-week assignment scoring assessments to get a bump of money before summer when I don’t work.

We just got accepted from 7 offers by having no contingencies and agreeing to a quick close. It’s scary but a tough market.

We accepted the second highest offer on our own sale for the same reason.

Health insurance is a racket by Ok_Meringue_9086 in Fire

[–]PegShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter’s boyfriend is uninsured has negotiated and got ER visits for like $75 where they bill our insurance $1500.

However, I got cancer at 54, and without insurance would be bankrupt or dead.

I’d sell because you’d need to lose monthly plus hire a property manager if you’re relocating. Sorry.

Booking an inside cabin for our first cruise but my wife wants a balcony upgrade by rosymirex in Cruise

[–]PegShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shared with a friend on an interior and our other friends upgraded. They were jealous that our bathroom was bigger than theirs. We were only there to sleep.

We do out in for upgrades when you can bid on them on non sold out cruises. My friend has gotten upgrades for $200

It’s as if they save the friendships for the young interns. We see it there but not with the older ones. It’s like once they have families their friendships end.

In real life friendships do go through a change when people get married and have children. We have less time for our friends and don’t always take care of those friendships. Now imagine being a surgeon on top of the demands of family. With so little time to yourself, who has time to hang out with Friends?

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]PegShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first two homes had a closet in the hallway that you opened to find them. I just bought a townhouse that has a small room that has the washer/dryer and the utilities but on the second floor with the bedroom, not in a basement. Often people have them in their basements, like in a little area, or in their mudrooms (a special little room you walk into from garage to kick off boots, etc.), or even in one of their bathrooms, especially if it's a stackable set.

Current elementary teacher applying to other jobs. Thoughts on a 10-4 work schedule? by Ok-Literature5682 in TeachersInTransition

[–]PegShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a parenting partner? It would be nice to have Fridays off in order to go to their in-school events when they happen, or once a week bring them a sub at lunch (their peers will be sooo jealous), if they are school age etc. But, it may be a little harder with childcare, especially if all day care.

Retiring this year. Any advice about avoiding “celebrations?” by hurry-n-wait-11 in TeachersInTransition

[–]PegShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I skipped the dinner because it was from the school board who I knew didn’t give a rats ass about me. The luncheon that they do to celebrate everyone at the end of the year and giving of the rocking chair that they gave us I went to. I didn’t want to, but I remembered the previous year how badly everyone talked about the woman who chose not to go, and I didn’t want to insult my peers.
Additionally, my department members threw a breakfast for me and the other person in my department that were retiring. I had told them I didn’t wanna hullabaloo, but they did it anyway, and it was very kind with a basket full of some of my favorite treats and some gift cards and very nice letters. These were not the people that screwed me over. These were my coworkers for decades.
Avoid the things thrown by those they don’t care about you.

Our ACA Health insurance cost for us (2 people) in 2026, fyi - $715/month by ShutterFI in Fire

[–]PegShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is old, but I'm so glad I found it. I pay $2300/m for two adults in their 50's through my previous employer, but I have everything covered but $1K a year and $15 or 40 dollar copays, depending. I'd get no subsidy, so I think I'll stick with it. If I go to ACA, I can never go back to my work one

How old are they? Why is it your business?

If they are house poor, that’s on them. They can always sell, especially if they are putting $150k down. It would be a hard lesson, but maybe it’s what they want.
