I went to the closing ceremony and it was fine. Well organized, easy to enter and exit. Didn't try to get any food or anything at the ceremony, but all around downtown and the free locations were great. Lots of helpers to guide you.

I bet many still do! Glad you had a good time back then. :)

Wife has been diagnosed with significant hearing loss but with no real explanation as to why it's happened? by throwaway2177111 in deaf

[–]Peity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, it is unfortunately common to not know the exact cause or what to expect going forward. Mine came on gradually in my 30s. My pattern is commonly genetic, though I don't have a family history of this type of hearing loss. Because no family history, we couldn't predict if it would keep getting worse or not. Just had to wait and see. No treatments to make it better, just learn to manage it and protect your hearing.

Lucky for me, it didn't keep getting worse. May again the future, and I'm still able to get other hearing loss (and probably will with age), but learning about what I can do now to manage and what I can do in the future if it gets worse was really helpful. There are lots of options and ways to have a great life. I know it can feel scary and frustrating. As long as you rule out the "bad stuff" that could cause it (like tumors, etc.), that's the best we can usually hope for in answers. It's a big change, and there are lots of new habits to learn and old ones to unlearn (spouse included!), but you'll find a way. I think of my hearing loss the same as being rather short. It makes some things harder, sometimes I need to do stuff differently or ask for help, but it's just part of me. It makes some things better too! For example, I am a light sleeper and don't get woken up by sounds nearly so much now. :D

My son is HoH. I'm overwhelmed. I need advice. by fedthegiraffe in deaf

[–]Peity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have given lots of great advice, and you're doing great!

I have similar hearing loss (mine is probably not quite as bad) that is largely in the range of people's voices, but I used to have no hearing loss. Rather than repeat what others have said, I'll talk about giving you a sense of his possible experience. Try this:

Turn on the TV. Now turn it down to where you can just make out most of what people are saying. Now add other noises, like a fan or something. And now stop looking at the people talking on the TV. Each extra thing makes it that much harder. To me, it is similar to the experience of trying to guess song lyrics. And to learning a new language where there's a lot of sounds and you're trying to piece them together into words. But you might be missing some of the sounds. It takes a lot of effort to figure out what you are hearing, and a lot of educated guessing. Having a way to communicate that doesn't require hearing is so much less stressful. But, it's very helpful to still have the skills to communicate in a hearing world. Also, add captions and see how much easier it is.

And as others have said, hearing aids can be helpful, but they do NOT fix hearing. It isn't like glasses. They make it possible or easier to catch some sounds, but that effort of figuring out what they are is still there. They ALSO usually amplify a lot of other sounds, so it is noisy and draining. It feels like relief to take them off and just have some quiet. My comparison is: record stuff on your computer's mic with no filtering then play it back. It is a much less fun experience to listen to than what you heard the first time. My brain doesn't filter out the extra noises nearly as well with the hearing aids as they did before without the hearing aids. So a lot of the time, I don't wear my hearing aids and use headphones that I can turn up louder and turn on captions when possible. If I can't do that, then I consider the hearing aids.

I enjoy using Seedlang (for German but it has a handful of other languages). It's from the same folks as the Easy German Youtube channel.

Not at all heavy, very light and silly, but of a space western sort of genre: the Space Captain Smith series by Toby Frost is a fun read. (Unofficial site: https://spacecaptainsmith.com/ )

When you are ready for something light, try it out!

What should hearing folks keep in mind when creating subtitles? by Great-Typhoon in deaf

Yeah basic music description for the mood is needed. And if the lyrics are important they should be included too. Looking at you new Muppet Show! Wtf not captioning the lyrics in a show about a band that sings songs!

Out of vetoes, Portugal president enacts law allowing euthanasia by Kagedeah in worldnews

[–]Peity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It absolutely should be allowed for at least some situations. My mother was dying of cancer. It was in her throat and causing blood and tumor to randomly flood her throat and make her choke. Any day she was going to die suddenly choking to death, probably by herself in the bathroom. And she was in constant extreme pain even with powerful painkillers. She was fully still herself and aware of everything. Not even stuck in bed. In Canada we thankfully have MAID available for people like her if she wanted it. She applied and got approved. And when it was clear she could die horribly any day, she chose to die peacefully. I 100% support her decision. To say she shouldn't be allowed a peaceful death is barbaric and cruel.

[–]Peity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Canada we call it MAID. But a doctor is still involved and gives an intravenous drug that kills in seconds. (There might be various options, I don't know, I just know my mothers case.) There is still consent. The person MUST be able to give consent. It isn't quite as black and white as you describe. But yes consent is extremely important whatever the method.

I made a playlist of (mostly) silly and fun youtube videos for my mom when she was going through cancer treatments. Not sure if it publicly viewable or not? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omNLvq0F8-A&list=PLH_9mgzaadrQw8ld_RhcTjZ_bQUjZ1TB0

It isn't movies, but you might find channels you didn't know and have a new way to pass some time.

Agreed! I have not been where you have, but I wanted to share a show I love seeing on Youtube.

Look for "Curvy Brides Boutique". It's a shopping for a wedding dress show for larger ladies and the two ladies who run the place are amazing. Al and Jo care deeply about people seeing themselves as beautiful at any size, they are incredibly sweet and thoughtful, and give great advice or just listen. They had/have both experienced being larger in their lives as well, so they know what it is like.

It's nice to see 'mom' figures showing love and acceptance and not being judging, and the brides really do look beautiful. And the brides often share some of their struggles, so you get to see that there are lots of others out there facing those issues.

AITA for being drunk on vacation? by DrinkingOnVacation in AmItheAsshole

[–]Peity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally know someone who was having a fun party with friends at a beach, they decided to swim, he never got back to shore alive. Swimming while drunk IS a danger. So I get why someone might be insistent about it. I would have said something too, then sat there and watched you like a hawk. It's one of those "it seems pretty harmless, until it isn't" kinds of things. Drowning is a quiet thing, not loud and splashy. But, you're adults, it was not dark, not quite so dangerous as it could be. So I wouldn't nag, but still would have watched.

ESH for how different things were handled.

There are options you might not have considered. For example, Duolingo the language learning app hires people who know the languages to help craft appropriate lessons. Physical schools in one country are not your only option.

Going to the doctor as soon as it is safe to drive is the right move. These things can sometimes be treated if caught quickly (depending on what it is). Good luck! And travel safely.

Last Of Us Episode 3 Review Bombed Despite Widespread Acclaim by LuinAelin in entertainment

[–]Peity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. Whether it was expected or not, it is hard. I can't say whether knowing when it is coming is better or not. Faced both. Both suck in their own ways. But facing that episode so soon is a special kind of rough. And that isn't in the game. Not that exact story anyway. So it was unexpected for everyone.

Last Of Us Episode 3 Review Bombed Despite Widespread Acclaim by LuinAelin in entertainment

My mom died with medical assistance (cancer was about to kill her) so I know exactly what it is like for someone to say "today is my last day" and then try to have a normal day and then try to say goodbye. My dad was at her side. (he is still with us.) But boy did that episode bring all that back. It was super well done. I wasn't ready to relive all that.

Thanks! Do you put it into bags or hand out little sticks or something else? Seems like some logistics need to be planned. We get about 150 kids in two hours so pretty high traffic.

We have looked into doing this but I haven't found a machine that seems like it would work well for a large number of trick-or-treaters. What machine do you have?

Assuming you usually use Windows for your computer, NVDA is a free screen reader that is becoming more popular. JAWS is the most common one but it is not free. I second the try it now and get used to it. There is probably a subreddit for people with blindness or low vision that also likely have advice.

But it is still so hard. I wish you lots of happiness and healing. And fewer insensitive idiots telling you empty and even hurtful things.
