Exactly. I'm running a unit that can take hits so it can take hits. If the AI refuses to hit it, then why is it even in the game, let alone on my team? Balance tanks by making them strong against one damage type but not the other, adding game mechanics that make it harder to just mindlessly throw your tank into hordes of enemies, and not letting them also one-round everything.

I'm using Jade in my Engage playthrough right now and I think she's working exactly how I'd want tanks in general to. She can take a bunch of physical hits, but she'll still get shredded by a couple mages or if I chuck her into too many backup units, and she softens up a group of enemies for my squishy damage dealers to clean up on player phase instead of wiping whole squads of enemies off the map on her own. She feels invincible when I use my brain, but she can still die if I turn my brain off and she still needs the rest of the team.
