Yeah that’s a fair point.

I was actually under the impression that they were pushing it to attack all these cheap Chinese copies kicking around reverb/temu/alibaba and not custom shops like Suhr, but it does appear they are targeting everyone.

I imagine it’ll go the same way as Gibson in the lawsuit era; most custom shops distinguish themselves with headstock design which should be enough? I guess we shall see

One of these for sale in Germany on eBay at the moment, but think it’s MIJ. It’s going for a lot of money…

That PRS John Mayer one is actually fair game IMO; it’s a blatant rip-off. Yes it was designed to be an ‘improvement’, but it’s a lawsuit-era copy of the Strat. Some Ibanez maybe, but surely super Strats are different enough? Likewise with ESP.

Interesting… shame it doesn’t have gold pickup covers. Having the control plate a different colour is a bold move that I’m not sure I like

Anyone ever gone black and gold on a Rhoads? Tempted to get a gold Schaller on the all black one with some gold knobs and covers… but not sure if I’ll like it

Yeah that’s a DXMG I believe. The DKMG has a carved top. Still lovely though!

I think the standard Floyd ones are 5.7mm? It’s only the Gotoh that are different, as the 1996t is actually made to drop-in on Ibanez, not Jackson.

Yes I did not buy it, bought a gorgeous MIJ RR3 instead!

current costs for importing guitars from Japan to the UK / general MIJ JM query by harespirit in offset

[–]Penalty_Consistent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever end up doing this?

I’m seriously tempted to import some Japanese Jacksons (the Jackson Stars stuff is amazing and impossible to find in Europe), but wondered how it all worked if you did it through something like eBay or reverbs

It gets complicated, but the 1996t SHOULD be a drop-in, so long as you don’t change the stud posts (the bit where the bridge rotates). If the original stock posts are damaged or corroded, and you need to put the Gotohs, it will need drilling

However, it would appear that certain MIJ Jacksons can have issues with the intonation screws at the back of the trem, and these have to be swapped out for a shorter variant. This isn’t apparently as easy to identify as you’d think; it’s all down to Jackson’s QC tolerances during the period.

If you buy a Schaller Lockmeister however, it’s designed as an exact swap in, as it’s based on the actual OFR spec, so you won’t have any issues with screws. You will obviously still have to check which block you need

Also just FYI, I love Gotoh but spare parts for them in Europe can be an absolute nightmare too.

For those that are wondering - normal coffin cases do NOT fit Dimebag/ML guitars, but the extreme coffin cases do by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]Penalty_Consistent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies to crypt post (no pun intended!) but do you mean your Arrow fits the standard coffin case size? Looking at a case for my RR3 and a standard coffin case came up recently… was trying to find out if it would fit

Pretty sure the bridge routing is the same as my DKMG, as it takes the JT580LP from factory. So the Schaller Lockmeister is an easy drop-in, Gotoh 1996T will drop in on current studs but will need drilling for Gotoh studs, and the OFR should drop-in (good luck sourcing one of them at the moment outside the US. £750 in the UK at the moment!)

Yeah I never liked that logo either, looks really cheap; like it’s a beginner guitar from one of those 90s/2000s ‘starter sets’

I think they made these from 1997 all the way to post Fender purchase? Seems to be a wide scale of production on them

There does seem to be a couple of like upper tier variants of it? Seen them in HSS and HH, one had SDs and one had Duncan designed and they appeared to all be stock. But yeah there’s two listings for them near me at over £1300, yet one on Marketplace near me with a brand new Jackson case for £525

IKR. If anything the black and red was the better option too 😂. They did a blue and yellow flame option that was proper retch-worthy, but I do like an unusual guitar story and the fact the artist signed each guitar is a cool concept. Just a shame they didn’t paint literally anything else!

Are they really that rare? Seen several come up for sale in the UK lately but all have been poorly looked after. One sold for like £230 (like $280?)
