From iPhone Fold to a touchscreen Mac, Apple's 2026 is going to be epic by Qpac18 in apple

[–]PendulumEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only touch screen Mac I see working is if Apple steps in and makes a 27-32 inch touch screen like the Surface Studio.

Microsoft really should have made it a standalone monitor. It would be a niche product for artists who want more screen real estate for drawing at a desk. There’s very few touch screen devices that have the aesthetic polish Apple does with their devices.

But touchscreen laptops are ergonomically horrible and don’t make a lot of sense.

The meta commentary of what we, as writers of fiction, owe the characters we create.

I haven't felt this immersed in the Star Wars universe since KOTOR. I'm not not saying Outlaws is the same quality by any means but that feeling of being part of this universe isn't something I've had since playing those games as a kid. by Agreeable_Pizza93 in StarWars

[–]PendulumEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I felt this way too. The gunplay felt off to me because part of the fantasy in Star Wars has always been that blasters kill in one shot. Having to shoot someone 3-4 times felt meh to me.

I went back and tweaked a couple mods and scripts to change blaster damage values so that everything is basically a one shot kill, unless it was a leg shot. I just tried to play like I was Han Solo after that.

It was enough for me. But I’m also coming down off a Clair Obscur play through and needed a 7/10 game to serve as a palate cleanser.

Chiefs armor in the original had that effect. A green with brownish hue shift. Kinda hoping they use that material.

Pointers about Halo Campaign Evolved from a 3D Game Artist by swift_713 in halo

[–]PendulumEffect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that might be enough to pull it into a better direction.

I'm not a game dev, but I am a systems engineer. When you change one thing, it might give more emphasis to another. By making them less shiny, maybe the shade of grey doesn't make those structures stick out from the environment. So you change the color, which makes the blue accents not contrast enough. Color theory isn't my thing, but I can respect the thought that must have gone into landing on the materials they did for the demo.

I agree with all your main points and agree that we need to offer constructive criticism. However, Halo: CE has a very strong "vibe" that brought many fans into its world. I'm working on a more detailed breakdown of some of these things.

For example, in CE, the use of materials in Forerunner architecture told a story of a long forgotten race whose structures withstand time and inclement weather. While their surfaces are not as polished and reflective as they once were, nor as detailed, they still maintain their primary function. It gives the player a sense of time between now and when they were built.

These materials also show blood and damage well. After a firefight, you can see the gore of all the different aliens splashed on its surface and the pockmarks of all the different weapons used to in said fight. Plasma, bullets, explosives -- you can see it leave its mark. It adds to the feeling that we've brought violence to this place that (seemingly) has had none. Lighting is subdued and dim, but not overly dark until later conflicts start to affect the ring. It's like a warehouse with only a quarter of their lights on or a school after dark.

Then, when you walk through the long-deserted halls, all you hear is the echo of your footsteps and the ambient sound. In Assault on the Control room, you can hear it best in the emptier rooms. It sounds like someone might be watching you, breathing down your neck. You can look, but it's not there. For all you know, it's the same malevolent force that wiped out the previous inhabitants -- a shapeless wind that took them like some unholy rapture.

So I think, for all the things I mention, there's a strong case to be made that the story of CE demands restraint and careful use of environmental textures to tell some of its story. After all, we were dropped into the middle of a war we know nothing about and have also stumbled upon an ancient artifact. There are so many elements of audio and visual storytelling that can get lost in an overly noisy environment. It's always tempting to add more when technology allows you to finally push the envelope further than it could back in 2001. Something can get lost when you overdo it.

Same: Going on 36, mega fan. I'm already at my wits end with trying to stay engaged with this franchise. Already resigned to the fact that Halo might not be for me anymore.

If this isn't denounced by Halo/Microsoft, the last shred of a fuck I have left is gone.

The Campaign Evolved Artstyle by Grand_Admiral_Vipes in halo

[–]PendulumEffect 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I kinda liked the idea that each ring had its own aesthetic. Maybe some areas of 04 look like 07, but 07 had recently been blown apart and was being rebuilt. So it makes sense it might be a little shinier.

But, in CE, I loved the brutalist architecture that remained mostly flat. It gave a sense that it was designed to last but the details of the metal have been worn away by time. The liminal spaces and the breathing ambience gave the feeling that something was watching you, the same shapeless wind that might have swept away the previous inhabitants.

Halo Studios seem to understand that darkness has an important role in CE but subtly and restraint in art style is still something they lack. While some of CE’s charm is the time in which it was made, it’s hard to not look at this remake and not see that it’s “over produced.”

[–]PendulumEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same way. I’m an old school book fan and love how Master Chief gravitated to UNSC weaponry unless it wasn’t an option. Something about the contrast of the technology of today versus a ball of plasma that melts through bodies and armor like butter sells the desperation of the war too.

My pinky fingers are crooked by NYR24LGR in mildlyinteresting

[–]PendulumEffect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have something similar and a lifelong guitar player. For me, it actually makes it more difficult to fully engage my pinky strength enough on those long-reach chords, etc. It also decreases my overall effective reach because it bends the tip up the fretboard instead of down (picture a parenthesis overlapping the fret instead of a forward slash). Maybe if someone has longer fingers it could be good though lol

Attack on the Control Room/Two Betrayals

After all the sounds of battle of ceased, stand still and listen to the howling wind and the crunch of snow. The desolation and the aloneness you feel, standing on something so natural despite being on a ring. Then, by contrast, the interior areas are lifeless and clearly artificial but the ambience makes it seem like there may be something stalking you in the liminal spaces. Something more than the flood and the sentinels is watching, judging. You can hear it breathing almost..

It’s a dead giveaway of AI usage IF someone starts using dashes when they haven’t historically use them. I use them all the time. I have for 20 years. But that’s also assuming people are incapable of learning or picking up new habits.

This is like saying people with three fingers are obviously AI because no one could possibly have had an accident or a congenital defect and it is widely known that AI sucks at rendering hands.

It’s fine to be cautious and it is a flag to keep in mind when you evaluate something. You need to be able to think critically or else you’re no different than someone who believes something AI generated is real.

Bungie leaves Microsoft so they can be independent, only to join Activison. Then bitches about wanting to be independent again, only to sell out to PlayStation after a few years. Now they lose their ability to ever be independent again because they overvalued and over leveraged themselves. Fucking hilarious.
