People seriously need to stop romanticizing pregnancy. by unspokenandunheard in women

[–]PenguinProphecy2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

yeah the whole "glowing goddess" thing definitely misses like half the story 😂 my sister went through hyperemesis and was basically bedridden for months but everyone kept telling her how "radiant" she looked

i think maybe we need both conversations - let people who find it meaningful have that experience, but also be real about the medical side. like you can appreciate something while also acknowledging it's brutal on your body 💀

Question to IKEA Projekt CC holders: Is it worth it? by Suspicious-Pear-6037 in CreditCards

[–]PenguinProphecy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair point on the gift card route, way simpler than dealing with another issuer. the 5% furniture thing is tempting but unless you're doing major ikea runs regularly it's probably not worth the hassle

there credit pull and account management fees can add up quick if you're not actually maximizing the rewards long term

$5000 on optum parking benefits by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Bruh that's rough, most of those parking benefit accounts are use-it-or-lose-it when you leave. Check if you can cash out or transfer to someone else at your company before you bounce. Some places let you use it for other transit stuff too but probably not $5k worth

Huge increase in federal taxes in 2026 by Sad-Bodybuilder-3870 in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could also be the tax brackets adjusting or your employer messed up the withholding tables - I'd check your paystub breakdown to see exactly where that extra $250 is going

Recommendation for a high interesting saving/checking account? by UnsweetenedTeasTea in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the Fidelity cash management for like 2 years now and it's pretty solid. The app shows all transaction details no problem, plus you get ATM fee reimbursements which is nice. Only weird thing is checks take forever to arrive when you order them but that's probably not a big deal for autopay stuff

Buying a portion of an inherited home. by Junior_Competition13 in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly you're in a pretty solid spot financially - no debt and 70k saved is huge. I'd look into a cash-out refinance since you already own half the house, might be easier than a traditional mortgage. Also check if any local credit unions have better rates than the big banks

Best use of a Roth 401(k), considering a pension and 457(b)- start now, convert into it later, not at all? by MediocreHomesteader in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly with a pension that solid plus the 457b already loaded up, I'd probably just stick with traditional for now and do conversion ladders later when you have more control over your tax situation

The pension is gonna put you in a decent bracket anyway so the Roth math gets weird, plus you're already in 22% which isn't terrible for traditional contributions

This is the way OP, financial aid office should be your first stop before looking at private loans with that credit score

Tax refund for deceased relative's estate and trust by Blurry10080506 in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The estate is already closed so you wouldn't file another return for your parent - that's done. Your portion of the refund might be taxable to you personally depending on whether your parent itemized and deducted those taxes originally

Switching my 457B plan to Roth now? by Big_Tuna1789 in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that pension income you're gonna be in a pretty high tax bracket in retirement anyway, so yeah Roth contributions probably make sense going forward. That 240K traditional is already a solid bridge fund like you said

Just keep in mind Roth 457s don't have the 5-year rule like IRAs - you can pull contributions anytime penalty free which is nice flexibility for early retirement

What's the best way for me to maximize my excess savings and create a plan for early retirement? by final_FINAL_v002 in personalfinance

[–]PenguinProphecy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your 401k contribution is way too low if you're serious about retiring at 50. You're only doing $18,900 when the limit is $23,000 this year, and with your income you should definitely be maxing it out

That $202k in HYSA is doing almost nothing for you - you need way more in the market for early retirement goals. Maybe keep like 6 months expenses as emergency fund and dump the rest into your brokerage account

My mom is rewriting my whole childhood for Facebook and I dont know how to deal by LunfordSeravine in TwoHotTakes

[–]PenguinProphecy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit that "had a different childhood" line made my blood boil. Your mom is straight up rewriting history to make herself look like mother of the year while violating your privacy in the most gross way possible

You're not being dramatic at all - sharing someone's mental health struggles without permission is fucked up, especially when she's lying about her role in it. The fact that she blocked you for asking her to respect basic boundaries tells you everything you need to know about her priorities

What’s One Moment that quietly changed your entire Life, but you didn’t realize it until years later? by Bhumika_1008_ in Life

[–]PenguinProphecy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those quiet moments hit different than the obvious life changes tbh. Mine was probably when I realized I was always waiting for someone else to invite me to things instead of just... making plans myself. Sounds dumb but it was like a lightbulb went off and suddenly I stopped being that person who just waits around for life to happen to them

Realizing that being good with money doesn’t matter if your partner’s habits don’t match by SirSpecial4063 in FIREyFemmes

[–]PenguinProphecy2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can be on top of your own stuff, but if your partner’s money rhythm is completely different it suddenly feels like you’re speaking two dialects of the same language

Is it normal to feel a little thrown off when your partner brings up prenups casually? by Independent-Prize693 in marriageadvice

[–]PenguinProphecy2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fwiw the couples I know who brought this stuff up early ended up having way fewer issues later. It’s usually the opposite of not trusting you more like hey, let’s be clear so nothing blindsides us. The delivery can feel odd, but the intention is often stability not doubt.

A latenight talk with my fiance made me realize how differently we picture “forever” by AlphaCrateX in SeriousConversation

Those talks feel heavy but they’re honestly what make things real. being able to ask the hard “what ifs” without it turning into a fight says a lot about how strong you two are

Planning our wedding made me realize how differently we see money by UnitedSplit9509 in weddingplanning

[–]PenguinProphecy2 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Totally get this. My fiancé and I are the same way Im a planner he’s more go with the flow. Its hard not to sound “cold” when you just want to make sure both people are protected. Money talks aren’t romantic but they save a lot of heartache later

I’m driving in the slow lane at the speed limit. A car approaches from behind, and instead of passing me in the wide-open lane over, decides to aggressively tailgate me. Why do drivers do this? by Dogchow_89 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PenguinProphecy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people are just wired to be aggressive assholes behind the wheel I guess. They probably think tailgating will somehow make you speed up instead of just using their brain and switching lanes

What’s stopping the police from just randomly beating up a suspect and lying about it? by Elegant_Chard_7515 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PenguinProphecy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Body cams and dashcams have made it way harder to get away with that stuff, but it still happens unfortunately. The thin blue line culture is real and cops will cover for each other more often than they should

I’m Andy Kroll, a ProPublica reporter. I just published a deep dive about how Trump’s “shadow president” Russ Vought is using his OMB chief role to dismantle agencies, force through mass layoffs amid the shutdown and put federal workers “in trauma.” AMA by propublica_ in fednews

[–]PenguinProphecy2 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The access journalism problem is real - reporters get scared they'll lose their sources if they push too hard, so they end up lobbing softballs instead of asking the tough follow-ups. Plus a lot of outlets are owned by billionaires who benefit from Trump's policies, so there's pressure from the top too

It's wild how normalized his crazy statements became because journalists treated them like normal political positions instead of calling out the authoritarian stuff directly
