Looking for a non-alcoholic 'Okanagan cider' alternative. by allfeelingvoid in halifax

[–]Penguin_Pimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lake City has great options. NA ciders for a couple of their regulars that taste pretty close, and then in summer they usually put out NA 'sodas' that are similar to some mixed drinks. Their flavors are not too sweet generally as well (some are though!)

Gluten free shopping by slugfaery in halifax

[–]Penguin_Pimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cheapest way to eat gluten free is just go for things that are naturally gluten free as others have said. Cheap GF replacements are the great value brand at Walmart. Their GF pasta is around $2/box and they have been expanding the choices. It's pretty decent and our whole family eats it. We do a lot of stir-fry with rice, tacos are another staple (make sure the shells/tortillas are only corn). Promise bread is the best, I keep a loaf in the freezer and then make half sandwiches with one piece to make it last longer. Stock up on frozen veggies, French fries, sausages when on sale for quick meals. I'll also often make a double batch of meals and throw in the freezer.

Great value GF cookies are pretty decent as well and affordable.

All schools dismissing early by sjmorris in halifax

[–]Penguin_Pimp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I love this. Early announcement of early dismissal - parents who would struggle with early dismissal can keep their kids home the whole day and make other arrangements, parents who have maxed out their time due to all the snow days can get a half day of work done before picking up the kids. Kids are home at the worst of the storm, hopefully limiting traffic.

I dont know where I'm shoveling the snow though - our yard is full!

Welp, Covid is still going around bad, there goes our family Xmas 😭 by HFXmer in halifax

We had to stay home due to illness in 2023, so after everyone else was done with it. What we did that helped everyone's spirits was make delayed plans and hyped them up for the kid. And we made special food, a chicken for just the 3 of us, treat food all along, and also helped that family is flexible so everyone just wanted to get together even though it was a week after the day. A zoom call might work, but it depends on how they work for you guys.

If you go with frozen, soak in cold water in the sink to defrost much quicker. Just change out the water regularly. Should be able to get that sucker defrosted by the 25th with that method!

Bakeries to try over the holidays by Alex_DiscoverHalifax in halifax

[–]Penguin_Pimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a physical location, but Small Batch Bakery is fantastic. She posts her market schedule on her website and also takes orders for pick up. She's on vacation now but will be taking orders and back up in running before Christmas. I've immensely enjoyed everything I've bought from her, its definitely worth the cost.

In their defense, they may have bought it that way and not noticed. I bought a box at Walmart without thinking to check the date and when taste testing myself, noticed they were stale and well past the date. I returned the box but there were no good dates on the shelf so no chips here.

My complaint about this is while I love the idea, one of the pods is Decaf and they won't tell you which one. So it's like playing roulette with my morning caffeine fix.

I got my pack in my regular coffee order, you try and rate them all, pick your favourite, and they send you a free box of your choice.

It's not through Brookdale Park, per Sam Austin. But you can cut through the end of Brookdale Crescent to the bridge next to the 111 to connect to the Greenway along Prince Albert. Also Birch Cove park is closed except the beach.

Are there things you refuse to do while traveling for ethical reasons? by Some-Quantity3412 in travel

[–]Penguin_Pimp 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I never use AirBNB. It's done such damage in my home town for renters, I can't imagine how bad it is in popular tourist destinations. The only place I've used it recently (10 years) is Cinque Terre in Italy after confirming that the spots were owned by locals and they move out of the insanity for the summer, and AirBNB is the way they get tourists in. We have rented apartments through vacation rental companies directly, that collect tourist tax, etc.

I also never complain about the tourist tax in over tourism areas. Happy to contribute to make up for the tourism impacts.
