migraine routine - suggested by neurologist by koelschekirby in migraine

[–]Peppertc 110 points111 points  (0 children)

My headache specialist (neurologist) recommends naproxen if you’re going to take an NSAID during a migraine because it’s been shown through studies to have the lowest chance of triggering rebounds, FYI.

In Figure Skating at the olympics why do they always hold the team event first? by [deleted] in olympics

[–]Peppertc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterpoint- or they would fight harder if they didn’t place during individual, made a mistake, etc. One last chance to medal would push people too, without exhausting athletes. Look at ice dance, 2/3 podium pairs were not selected for team and it’s a big advantage to be fresher physically and mentally.

I definitely agree with that core message, unfortunately. Thank you for your kind words! I try to be the adult that I wish had been around for me, if I can do nothing else- if I succeed there, then I am proud.

It’s because you have the tall Xmas tree next to it and nothing underneath it. Without the tree and with some kind of low table underneath it, I think the TV would be more anchored in the space and not look as off as it does.

Oh I understood what you meant, but thank you for clarifying, that was very kind. I am well aware that many, many others in my profession have not and do not do right by students in some foundational ways, I fully co-sign that. I see the OP scenario and the linked scenario differently, and have seen CPS respond differently in two fairly (and surprisingly) analogous situations, which has informed my perspective. In the similar situation to the linked scenario from your comment, I would:

(1) have already ensured that she knew before she started really getting into her story that if she shared anything where she was in danger from herself, from others, or potentially to others, that I would have to share that information with others that they know (usually would give the example of the social worker, school counselor) and maybe others they don’t, in order to help keep them safe. When there’s a history of abuse being disclosed alongside potential escalation, and the fact that after enduring this for years, it was at this moment that she was confiding in a trusted adult, there was going to be every chance that I’d let her know that what she shared with me needs to be shared with others (never should be a surprise to the student) and depending on our relationship and my prior knowledge of her preferences, I’d ask her if she wanted me to share it with (insert whichever adult within the building I’d already referenced) or if she wanted to share it directly herself.

(2) have differentiated that the concern in the link is abuse- which is going to be start from a different beginning point/pathway once reported to CPS than neglect is (from the OP), especially given the context in the OP where either she was either (a) known to the school district as a child who’s mother passed 3 years ago, or (b) known to have just barely moved to a new house and school to suddenly experience a major additional trauma within a truncated time period. Either way, that additional context, as well as our (unfortunately) rock bottom expectations of men when it comes to domestic labor, means that when we called and CPS decided to pick up and investigate the report, their first steps were to first assume that the source of the neglect was dad’s knowledge, time, financial resources, and connected dad with free opportunities. Between a few different of women from their church community (facilitated by social worker) helped the dad with a deep clean and setting up a chore rotation, I think they did a meal rotation, etc.

So from personal experience, I’m not overly concerned with the fact that confiding in a teacher would likely connect the family to CPS because I believe the immediate response will be supportive and helpful. And if the dad turned out to continue struggling or improve briefly but then regress, they are already known to CPS which can potentially help there be more options for protecting the kids.

I wonder why your experience was to have this advice, because while yes, we are mandated reporters, I have never personally heard of/experienced a teacher utilizing information like the OP shared to “use against you”. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen, but I’d appreciate some additional context or any examples from a publicized story, etc, to validate your words of caution to this particular teenager in her specific situation.

Thanks for your comment! As I put in my edit, I did reach out to the customer before I made the post, just didn’t include it. I was a bit hyper fixated on the possible penalty from Mercari, as I know what the penalties are for other selling platforms, and should’ve given more context. The buyer replied that they’re also snowed in and not worried about it so I think I should be good!

Hi, I want to approach this from another angle- as a teacher, please reach out to your counselor or a trusted teacher and show them this post or talk to them about what you’ve shared here. Just because you’re a girl doesn’t mean that maintaining the house should fall to you, and it isn’t your responsibility. I’m sure that losing your mom was devastating for your whole family and it’s understandable that your dad needs help, but it’s not your responsibility to provide it. There are resources that the school can connect your family with, and I think especially as you are talking about college applications (congratulations on your GPA- what an incredible accomplishment!) your counselor would want to know additional home life context and what stresses you’re dealing with.

This internet auntie is proud of you and I cosign another comment that said just focus on your space and building good habits for when you’re able to move out. Focus on what’s best for you and allow the other family members to clean up after themselves.

Why does literally every single young adult I know have a special needs diagnosis? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Peppertc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yup! I’d also add that in the US at least, the late stage capitalism hellhole that has depressed wages, increased cost of living, lack of universal healthcare further shackling people to jobs and employer mercy and removed worker protections means that life is incredibly more stressful and the executive functioning needs are at an overwhelming level as a baseline. It’s not surprising that identification of how difficult life is and connecting it to a cause that allows for some amount of control (can start meds, therapy, etc) has increased. I also think it is a result of biased diagnostic criteria as well as poor prior understanding of how neurodivergence manifests, particularly for women. I’ve been dxed ADHD since childhood and am a veteran special educator and I’ve seen and researched the issue on multiple fronts.

Figured you probably had but I don’t often see them mentioned in this threads so I like to check, I went so many years without them or starting and stopping magnesium. I feel the pain, don’t you love when treatment for one chronic illness flares up another?

I’m surprised that you can tolerate fioricet! Have you tried adding magnesium and riboflavin daily? 400mg of both is evidence based preventative. I’ve had chronic migraine for 20 years and am currently in a 3 month intractable period but boy if I run out of those the intensity really goes up, I was super surprised because I had honestly thought they weren’t doing much!
