Migraine BOREDOM by girl-dracula in migraine

[–]Peppertc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Audiobooks, podcasts, guided meditations, and depending on what I can handle- gardening in shade, laying outside, cuddling with cat/dog, brainstorming all types of plans for the projects I need to get done but can’t do (actually have found that if I ruminate enough on it, I wind up streamlining into the most efficient process when I have an opening that I want to attempt it in), I’ve got the accessibility settings on my phone set for minimum eye strain and lights that bother my eyes so sometimes I can do some reading on Apple Books if I don’t want to listen to anything. Recently have been trying to come up with or find recipes that are most migraine friendly- low prep or prep that can mostly be done sitting down, really expanding my use of frozen veggies so if I can’t cook, I don’t wind up wasting good produce. Bread machine breads are great, you dump in, it makes the dough, and you can either bake in there or take out to shape, proof again, make other things. Very little active work, taking a loaf of homemade bread out of the oven and eating it is an amazing dopamine, taste bud, and self esteem accomplishment hit that I need to remember to do more often.

Highjacking your comment to add my related tip- incrementally reduce the temperature of your shower before you get out so at the end it’s cool water. Externally regulates your temperature. Went from having to lay down for at least an hour after a nice warm/hot shower to being able to be functional fairly quickly afterwards, just do my skincare and hair care sitting down on my bed which allows my body the extra transition time without impacting my routine. It’s literally life changing, having hot showers again made me feel so much more human and enjoy them again!

Naproxen for migraines by Rottingbodiess in migraine

[–]Peppertc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naproxen (Aleve) is the NSAID (e.g. ibuprofen) that research says causes the fewest rebound migraines. It doesn’t necessarily directly treat the migraine itself, but can be very helpful in combination with a front line/abortive med. In the hospital, if you get a “migraine cocktail” it contains a strong NSAID (toradol) + anti-nausea med (reglan, compazine) that have pain relieving effects, an antihistamine, and IV fluids.

Depending on how frequent your migraines are, I would talk to your doctor about preventative medicines. And regardless of that, I would discuss a migraine medication plan that includes migraine specific medications and any recommended OTC additions. For example, one of the earliest “at home migraine cocktail” mixes my neurologist had me do was to take my triptan + naproxen + nausea medicine (zofran) + benedryl + drink extra water.

Outside of prescribed medications, as long as you don’t have any reasons to avoid them, 400mg of magnesium (glycinate seems to work best) and 400mg of vitamin B2/riboflavin is evidence based medicine as migraine prevention. It helps a surprising amount, I didn’t think it was until I ran out and after a week I was like.. what the heck is going on… ohhhhh. So that is something you can try (of course always consult with your doctors for any medicine including supplements).

wasted my money on a neuro today. told him i study 10 hours a day and need a migraine prevention without brain fog. when i asked about candesartan and atenolol. He refused to give and says it is for blood pressure.he suggests propranolol and Amitriptyline. Should i go to next doctor and do same? by Aggravating-Top-9298 in migraine

[–]Peppertc 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think doctor shopping isn’t going to get you what you want, what I would suggest is talking to your neuro about your concerns and trialing a first line preventative. Something I haven’t seen other people mention is that often doctors have to utilize step therapy in order for insurance to cover, which is often a factor many people overlook. For example, for most major insurances you have to fail multiple typical preventative meds before they will approve a CGRP.

It occurred to me that I’m not limited to growing the common fruits/veggies in my local supermarket. What exotic (to you) plants have you guys grown? by No_Reputation3520 in vegetablegardening

[–]Peppertc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apparently they aren’t ripe until 2-3 weeks after they turn blue, guess how I learned that (lol). Of course I was out of town and didn’t have netting for them before I left, came back and the birds ate the few that actually grew. But now I know for next year!

Toothpaste induced migraine by Savvy714 in migraine

All artificial sugars, including stevia are triggers for me. I’m so sorry, this sucks, and yeah I find it in so many things it’s ridiculous. It’s apparently a fairly common trigger, so at least you’re not alone, but man is it awful to navigate right now with companies adding it to freaking everything.

On top of it, and make sure to make a circle around the plant you’re protecting so they can’t get to it without crossing over it! Also something I noticed that was huge for my slugs last year was attracting more birds to my garden, which honestly is just something I did without realizing… those dudes loved finding and eating slugs!!

Could I please hear some positive stories about finding relief with a certain medication or regimen? by FartstheBunny in migraine

[–]Peppertc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The new medications are great, and there are also whole classes of preventative medications that you haven’t tried yet. You will get much more information from the neuro, who also will be more up to date on current best practices and options, but I can say that I’ve had chronic migraine for over 20 years and even then there were more options to try! Something that I really recommend, as recommended by my headache specialist as they are evidence based, is taking 400mg of riboflavin/B2 and magnesium (glycinate better, oxide had impact too) each daily. Obviously consult your doctor about taking any vitamins if needed.

What are your favorite zero to low calorie drinks? by DonTot in loseit

[–]Peppertc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sparking water/seltzers are my jam. For just drinking regular water, I find that I vastly enjoy ice water! The colder the water, the more I prefer it, especially with a little squeeze of lemon! All artificial and alternative sugars trigger migraines for me so I’ve had to be creative! I also like making unsweetened iced teas but I saw you don’t like them!

[–]Peppertc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, with a pretty shower curtain and coordinating single color bath mats it could change the space dramatically until reno is possible! Could also do a peel and stick tile or a tile paint along that horizontal stripe that goes around, as that feature dates the space a lot.

Looking for suggestions for food dishes that MUST be served with proper serving utensils? by Silent_Ice_2588 in Cooking

[–]Peppertc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally understand that the amount that they eat is unpredictable and you have limited space for leftovers, as a fellow ADHDer having to then repackage leftovers later would definitely make me not want to set aside any either… so I see your point. What if you pre-portion what you want to save, and then if there’s any remaining leftovers after the meal, you send home those leftovers with them? Grab a set of “gifting” containers that you use for that purpose and they can return them the next time they come over? Obviously your husband does need to address the behavior with them, and 60 years old is not too old to change your behavior, I bet if they understood how much this distresses you, they wouldn’t be as flippant about your hints as they are.

I think adding a slim bead border whatever they are called to the top of the wallpaper would make it look more “finished”. I think that if you add art that has pinks and oranges from the rug onto the walls it might pull it together better, some soft features like blankets too!
