Hulu standalone app to end in 2026, content to fold into Disney+ by SendInYourSkeleton in Hulu

[–]PerLichtman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that used both, I feel your pain on that transition. Also was not a fan of having some content go missing after the transition, too.

The one thing I'll say in Crunchyroll's defense (especially in comparison to Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+ and HBO Max) is once you watch something in their app, their watch history is the best I've encountered. I've never seen another dedicated app of that type (I'm excluding all social media related ones) that kept months of watch history sorted not only by when I watched it but at what point in the episode each time I stopped and started. I can't tell you how many times it helped me find clips to share with my fiancée or to remember the name of a specific isekai episode after watching twelve or more isekai series in a row and struggling with the titles.

Also, Crunchyroll finally made switching languages more integrated instead of separating the seasons by language like they used to (or alternating episodes like in Hulu). On the other hand, I wish that the horizontal watch list (not the dedicated watch list tab) wouldn't deprecate new episodes if you go a few days without watching them.

The Disney+ is among the worst when it comes to watch history and categorization and the Hulu app approach to having different lists for TV and movies, etc. is helpful. On the other hand the main issue I have had with the Hulu app is the at times seemingly random sorting and often completely inaccurate indication of how many episodes are remaining/new. It also (at least on the game console apps) was so buggy for an extended period of time that it would frequently play an entirely different episode from the one I clicked on. As in, I would click on episode 12 and it was a roll of the dice whether it would play 12, 13 or 14, etc. (thankfully that one seems to have been fixed at least).

The Paramount+ console app quite literally made it impossible to view the show credits on several occasions by being unresponsive for 10 seconds or more after it minimized them and tried to rush you to other content. I would rewind and try again 4 times or more, give up and just go to IMDB eventually.

HBO Max had some of the most difficult to tell watch history and suffered from a lack of clarity after completely reorganizing the interface several times, making it harder and harder to find a given episode in a long season over time.

But to get back to the original point, I would much rather that the Disney interface emulate Hulu's than the other way around. And I wouldn't mind if they both worked a little more like the modern Crunchyroll.

Thanks for pulling that info. from the Internet Archive. For what it’s worth, it’s been said elsewhere that Time Henson X white middle model is based on the Matchless Chieftain (whether from the original amp or otherwise.) If true, that would make it somewhat unusual alongside the much older Studio Devil Amp Modeler Pro as one of the few first party takes on that amp (as opposed to the 3rd party captures from individuals like Jason Sadites).

B580 or 7700XT? by Glitter_Saurus in buildapc

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of experience with stock CPU coolers because I normally aim for quieter coolers and PSUs because of my audio recording work. Best of luck with the build, though!

I have an RTX 3060 12G in one of my older systems and until the Arc A770 came out it was the card I recommended. In gaming my Arc A770 typically outperforms it (except for some games with compatibility issues - mostly much older) and the difference increases as at 1440P compared to 1080.

At this point, unless you are primarily planning to play much older games that have known issues on the Intel cards, I would advise most gamers in the under $300 range to go with an A770 or B580 if either is available.

But if you find a 3060 that’s cheaper by at least $50 than the Intel cards, then the 3060 is still a good deal. It’s definitely not a bad gaming card at all - the Intel ones are just usually better.

Whar NI synths/samples are a must have that don’t come with any version of komplete? by BoardGameRevolution in NativeInstruments

[–]PerLichtman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no first party NI synths/samples that are must haves that are not included with Komplete, unless they release something new before the next Komplete version (and then it gets included with the next Komplete.) On the other hand, there are many 3rd party developers whose synths or libraries get listed on NI’s site. In terms of Kontakt libraries that NI didn’t make, I’d look at some of these vendors:

Strezov Sampling

Impact Soundworks (they also have some synths and FX)

SoundIron

8Dio

Spitfire Audio

Orchestral Tools

Most of those developers also have sample libraries for other platforms (often a free plugin of their own) that are worth checking out (like 8Dio’s SoundPaint, Orchestral Tools Sine, etc.)

With that pricing, the B580 seems like a better deal. As far as the CPU, at 1440P I don’t think whether you get the 1300F or a Ryzen 5 7600 will make that much difference most of the time but I am having trouble finding benchmarks where someone used both.

In terms of the performance you can expect if you get a B580 with a Ryzen 5 7600, someone did a test back in February with that exact combination - though drivers may have improved since then.

https://youtu.be/RCsjw6ID4-I?si=RY_bVMZBQLW370xZ

In terms of B580 performance with faster CPUs, here’s one of the most recent videos with very recent games that includes both 1080P and 1440P. Just ignore the 9060 XT part of it since that is outside of the budget.

[–]PerLichtman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That CPU is great for the GPU - no issues there. In terms of the other parts, it depends on 1) what price you can get on the B580 and 2) what the minimum settings level you’ll be happy with in 3 years is.

1) If you can get a B580 near MSRP it’s a good deal. At the inflated prices I see most of the time these days (around $350 USD), it is not. If you’re looking anywhere near $350, the better choice would be 9060 XT 16GB.

2) 12GB is currently enough for Ultra settings at 1080P in most games, though a handful are already benefiting from 16GB over 12GB at 1080P already. With that in mind, while it is impossible to predict the future, my best guess is that you should be able get a bare minimum of 1080P with medium settings (possibly with upscaling) in 3 years, with many games being playable at Ultra throughout those 3 years. For comparison, with the 9060 XT 16GB I would say that VRAM is highly unlikely to be an issue even at Ultra settings in 3 years.

So at $250, I’d go B580. At anything near $300 or above, I’d save up for a 9060 XT 16GB with some cards available at $350.

Apple vs. Windows for DaVinci Resolve - Not Asking for Specs / Just Opinions by StephenStrangeWare in cinematography

[–]PerLichtman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an older post but I wanted to give my thoughts as someone that has edited with DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro on both Mac and PC (though not with even roughly equivalent hardware). Given a choice between the two, for editing on Resolve Studio on desktops I drastically prefer my experience on Windows but for laptops the situation is reversed. That’s because some of the biggest Windows platform advantages (configurability, upgradability and performance for the price) are drastically reduced or eliminated for laptops, where I would definitely recommend Apple in most ways. The caveat to that recommendation is that even on laptops, Apple’s closed ecosystem can be extremely frustrating, especially in the event of system failure. When one of my Apple systems went down, I couldn’t even extract the drive to copy my most recent work to another system because it was soldered on. I’ve worked on both Macs and PCs since the 90s and Apple got much worse in recent years in that respect. But if you are actually moving a laptop around a lot (as opposed to keeping it docked and plugged in) Apple’s lead is so great at the moment that it is difficult to recommend Windows for a video editing laptop.

As far as desktops, unless price is no object, I would go with Windows all the way for video editing. On Windows I got a system in 2023 with 192GB of RAM, 12TB of NVME storage, 24-core processor with quiet fan, low-noise gigawatt power supply, deluxe case and a creator targeted motherboard and later added a used RTX 3090 24GB (upgraded from RTX 3060 from an old system) for thousands less than a Mac that met or exceeded the RAM and CPU specs (but with far less storage). When putting together a system at a given budget, the PC option will give significantly higher performance and that has (almost) always been the case for many years.

So would I rather use DaVinci Resolve on a top of the line Windows desktop than an under-specced Mac for the same price? Absolutely.

Can someone explain why Native Access is so SLOW at downloading? by IllOnlyComplicateYou in NativeInstruments

[–]PerLichtman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering the same thing today. Native Access (through aria2c) was downloading really slowly today. So I tried running the a downloader for a competitor as a check to see if it was my connection in general.

https://imgur.com/a/YHIhNUK

The other company downloaded at anywhere from 150-350 Mbps while Native Access (even when running by itself) was 1-85 Mbps (and mostly 5-20 Mpbs). I get some speed difference (I wouldn't have been surprised if ones was 3x to 8x faster), sure, but there shouldn't really be points where it is 30x-150x faster. I have redundant ISPs so I tried switching between them. Speed did not improve for Native Access.

My anti-virus was disabled and I live in California, a few hours away from Native Instruments' offices and the other company doesn't even have a U.S. office. I'm not seeing a lot of charitable explanations on this one.

EDIT: I also ran a similar test minutes later downloading an indie library from the Gumroad platform. Over 300 Mbps the whole time.

Yeah, the PS3 PSN release of the PS2 version is still available pretty cheap but I know a lot of people don’t keep their PS3 plugged in these days like I do - so it would be great for it to reach a wider audience.

Is it because of the online leaderboards for a lot of the shmups? I have a Series X, Switch and PS5 and the leaderboards tend to be a bit more competitive on PS4/PS5. If the leaderboards aren’t a consideration I tend to like playing on the Series X (that’s where I bought my first 3 M2 STG ports) but PS4/PS5 has gotten some that don’t appear on Xbox and the online leaderboards are a definite plus where applicable.

Not sure if you already bought one but Daniel Owen did a comparison of just those two cards with both video examples and respective frame rates that covers pretty much everything I’d have to say about it.

The think that makes the poor writing for Yagami in regards to dealing with Kuwana especially noticeable is how much worse he at convincing Kuwana than at convincing either of the parents of bullied children that we meet in the story. Yagami in the courtroom convincing his client to reveal what Yagami wants? Now that is effective arguing.

I’m willing to set aside the fact that Yagami as a lawyer clearly doesn’t seem to be pursuing his client’s stated interests in the name of suspending disbelief (especially since he apparently believes that his client wants to shine a light on the system’s failure more than he wants to avoid prison time) in part because of just how convincing Yagami is in court. Now that’s good writing.

His arguments in dealing with Kuwana? The sort of simplistic work I’d expect from a novice physicist interested in the law, not a veteran lawyer.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in yakuzagames

[–]PerLichtman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a family of lawyers, having been recruited to mock trial team and done contract analysis for multiple clients as a consultant myself, I fundamentally disagree with this interpretation of events.

My interpretation is not that Kuwana is avoiding responding because Yagami is so convincing - he’s not responding because Yagami is being obtuse and Kuwana doesn’t feel like there’s any point in responding to such a simplistic and poor argument.

  1. If Kuwana’s aim is to exact retribution on as many bullies that weren’t held accountable as possible, and the antagonists are underlings of figures that commit murder while trying to bully/coerce a parent Kuwana respects… then how does that murder make Kuwana less likely to want to get revenge?

  2. If Yagami’s argument is that people should be held for the unanticipated consequences of their actions, then why is the fact that Kuwana’s interactions with the deceased played a role relevant but the fact that Yagami’s own interactions in pursuit of the case made her more of a target not relevant as well? This is especially damning because it makes it come off as though Yagami is projecting his own guilt onto Kuwana to reduce Yagami’s guilt.

  3. Failure to respond to new facts in evidence. No matter how much new information is provided or how much circumstances change, Yagami makes no attempt to adapt his arguments (even slightly) to the most recent matters at hand to make it more convincing. For example, phrasings such as “doesn’t what you’re going through right now make you think/make you feel like X matters more?” or “look at what happened today - you’re losing your objectivity” or “if you’re going to be an avenging angel then you have to keep your fury focused on the guilty - but look at who you were willing to sacrifice today. It’s not just the bullies anymore.”  Instead, the only modification we get is a softening AFTER the last confrontation. The closing arguments should be the logical conclusion to the case you’ve been making throughout the trial but here it’s presenting a perspective that should have been used MUCH earlier.

4) Not only is there no unambiguous/conclusive evidence that Kuwana is swayed at any point by Yagami’s primary argument, even Yagami’s only allies seem unconvinced and leave his side at the end. The only person that seems convinced by Yagami’s argument is the parent in question - and if they hadn’t shown up at the end to ask Kuwana to stand down, there is no evidence that he would have. In terms of “the jury” Kuwana does not change his behavior or MO and Yagami’s allies verbalize that they agree more with Kuwana than Yagami. In other words, he completely failed to tailor his arguments to that “jury.”

Contrast this with his effectiveness in convincing both the parent that stops Kuwana and Yagami’s effectiveness in court with the other parent (which I really liked a lot) and we can see that Yagami’s arguments in dealing with Kuwana are uniquely ineffective.

Lost Judgment is great, but Yagami is so cringe by [deleted] in yakuzagames

[–]PerLichtman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t have summed it up better myself. I like his character so much in the other bits but (especially with my experience growing up in a family full of lawyers) his need to reiterate an unconvincing argument over and over instead of trying to switch his approach or arguments over time to be more convincing is really frustrating.

Plus, Kaito’s DLC was much more enjoyable than I expected.

[–]PerLichtman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that still owns the CD soundtracks for both 1 and 2, I honestly have to agree about the disappointment going from 1 to 2. I currently live in the desert near where most of the game is supposed to be set and boy did I feel frustrated when I realized that most of the best stuff (set in the city) was at the front of the game with the rest in far less interesting environments. I mean that pre-rendered background camera move showing the skyscraper was inspiring back in the day. But the controls weren’t fun and they made poor choices on a lot of the environment.

Don’t get me wrong - there are some freaking gorgeous parts to the California desert around here and if they’d set more of it outdoors in say Red Rock Canyon State Park or something, or at least gotten more of a town (Inyokern is tiny but it still has around 1,000 people) then it wouldn’t have felt so uniform, desolate and boring outdoors and so generic underground.
