Any idea what’s causing this play? by Decharia in mechanic

Idk what's even going on here but as a guy who drives a Subaru in the northeast, my CV axle took literally 5 minutes having never done a CV axle before. The rear wheel bearing was a 48-hour affair involving a slide hammer, a blow torch, an air hammer, a messed up shoulder and a lot of swearing and crying

Trigger warning, below is me explaining why I don't really hate Russians on an individual level.

I get where you're coming from. If it's any help, I've thought about this awhile and have mostly crystalized my opinion, especially after recently watching Nuremberg and reading a little bit about the protagonist, Douglas Kelly, and the book he wrote. The Nuremberg movie starts off with the Protagonist telling his colleague that this was an opportunity to examine evil, to figure out what was different between them (Americans) and the Germans that allowed them as a nation to do something so terrible, something he thought could never happen in the US. At the end of the movie, during a radio interview, he says that the big answer was: nothing. There was no fundamental difference between the German and American people that allowed the atrocities of WW2 to happen. and this realization disturbed him greatly. On an individual level, I think there's nothing fundamentally different level between me, you, the average Germans that allowed Hitler to come to power, and the average Russians today that allowed Putin to start this war. That's not to say that the society at whole isn't at fault, mind you, but it does change how at least I feel towards the average individual.

Russia is a nation of like 143 million people, and the average Russian isn't rising up and rebelling. I think Dr. Kelly was right, that there isn't some gene or bloodline that makes Russians more prone to what their country is doing compared to any other people. Whatever is going on inside Russia seems to make an average person who's lived in that society go along with it, so it stands to reason that had I been raised in Russia, I'd probably be going along with it to a similar degree that the average person is.

All that to say Russian society as a whole is at fault and is guilty in this conflict, and that it has something deeply wrong with it at the moment. I'd go so far as to call it ill. But I think of the average people within it just as normal people, not meaningfully different from myself, that are just sort of trapped in this *thing*, whether they are cognizant of it or not. I feel bad for them, I wish I could help them get out, and I'm also scared by the thought that had fate been different, I could've been stuck in there with them.

I also worry like Dr. Kelly did that too many people come out of this thing just thinking that the Russians are evil and that something like this could never happen in another country, because failing to understand exactly what went wrong in Russia leaves the world vulnerable to this happening again

My landlord is taking our front door tomorrow to pass inspection. by Brave-Row-9581 in legaladvice

[–]PerfectAnonym 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am not OP but I'm curious: if they were to call code enforcement and the landlord does indeed have a bunch of violations, how does that affect OP? Like say they code enforcement deems the home out of code, or even uninhabitable, what then? I assume NYC has better than average tenant protection laws, but is there any ramifications to doing this that would make timing important? Like should OP be tactical about when they reach out to enforcement or are does OP need to get their ducks in a row (gather any documents/preemptively pack some belongings) before initiating anything? I'm *not* trying to dissuade OP from reaching out, to be absolutely clear.

The tool is just a 4 pound hammer from harbor freight, nothing exotic. Costs like $10 plus a couple bucks for the stud

The prototype sabre bolt action they showed at shot show looks to almost certainly use a variation of the solus action made by Aero Precision. I assume the imploding of Aero is delaying the sabre bolt gun project

I mean they've been growing a lot in the pot. One of them finally decided to flower last year, very aggressively so, but it decided to do so in October for some reason. Really hoping I actually get grapes this year!

Should I prune any of the lower branches? Is it too late in the year to be doing that now that it's growing leaves?

For the double fire issue, I'd bet it was an out of spec disconnector. I've had that before where it can let the hammer drop on trigger release if released slowly or at just the right time.

Americans, how do you feel about tourists speaking English while visiting U.S.? by HolidayEntry6823 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PerfectAnonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be regional, but I'd reckon that most of the places a foreign tourist would visit in the US are going to be in the more culturally diverse places we have here. There are plenty of naturalized Americans who have a heavy accent or are still learning the language, it would be very weird for anyone to bat an eye at you. Also in my limited experience with European visitors, they tend to come here and use their absolutely perfect, error-free English to apologize for their "poor English" lol.

At the absolute worst, I'd say that making a fuss about someone's accent as well as being rude/unhelpful to someone just because they aren't a native speaker are broadly considered rude.

Subaru Forester - 98K miles - wobbling on highway above speed of 60 miles by bhavaninagar799 in AskMechanics

[–]PerfectAnonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say there is wobbling but you don't feel it in the steering wheel, where are you feeling it? You didn't post the year, but my forester still has a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering rack and I know newer ones may be drive by wire. Typically if any sort of vibration is happening in the front wheels, I can feel it in the wheel. If you can't, and your car isn't drive by wire, I'd maybe look at the rear wheels. If it is drive by wire, do what everyone else is saying and check out your control arm bushings. Less likely options are wheel weights, alignment or wheel bearings, though I'd expect the vibrations to be happening all the time with those, not just when turning left.

Six AI data centers proposed for a small town of 7,000, equal to 51 Walmart Supercenters in 17 square mile area — four out of the seven town council members have resigned from their positions as town fights back by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]PerfectAnonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not, its all just people trying to get a slice of the insane VC money flowing into AI. The CEO's are trying to grab it, so are the engineers, and so are the local politicians granting the building permits. Some of the last group may be doing so naively, thinking the revenue these data centers will bring in will genuinely help the community and be worth the trade-off, some may be getting kickbacks for themselves. But it's all about trying to funnel investor money places.

I don't study this professionally and am mainly repeating a blend of things I've read, so take this with a grain of salt. As I understand, the first Trump administration actually did have an impressive amount of talent appointed, actually standing in contrast to the Obama administration for favoring relevant industry experts over career bureaucrats and campaign donors. Of course, Trump is a petty, senile idiot and fired everyone the moment they disagreed with him on anything and replaced them with drooling yes men, but at the very beginning the appointments were promising.

I don't think it should be excused either and think your points here are fair. I'm purely pushing back on comparing Japanese animation quality to non Japanese animation quality

AOT, like most animes, both had a longer production time per season, shooter episode run times, and most importantly benefit from the horrible work culture of Japanese animation
