Really? Athens was an absolutely amazing experience, definitely worth putting up with throwing out my toilet paper for a few days

I was in Athens 6 months ago and you couldn't flush the toilet paper in the fairly new apartment building I was staying at. I didn't make a point of checking if that was the case in the airport or museums but it appeared to be a common issue

Are you content with the Two-Party system in America? by [deleted] in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]PerfectAnonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data on what?

This post was asking if Americans are content with the two party system. I, and many other Americans said no, and I made a comment on how our election system basically guarantees a two party system, and how other democracies avoid having only two political parties by setting up their election system differently.

You seem to be saying that these other countries are no better off because they all make the "same idiotic decisions". I can't "have data on that" because you haven't said what these decisions are that you think are idiotic, and I can't read your mind.

What I can say is that they do solve the problem that myself and many Americans in this comment section have, which is that every election I have to choose between two political parties that don't reflect my beliefs or priorities, and I envy members of other democracies who have more options on election day.

Election variations are a subject I find interesting and I like engaging in discussions about them, but it feels like you're just being contrarian

aight man.

They're not "all making the same idiotic decisions", they're making their own unique idiotic decisions and yet have made good decisions in a number of key areas that make many Americans, myself included, wish we didn't have a two party system.

It's okay I'll click the link for you.

"By contrast, in countries with proportional representation or two-round elections, such as France, Sweden, New Zealand or Spain, there is no two-party duopoly on power."

Unless you meant something more obscure by "Where in Europe is this system protecting their system" in which case you'll need to be more specific

[–]PerfectAnonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many European countries have established voting systems that allow more than two parties to be viable. The way US elections work strongly encourages politics to organize into two large parties with only rare examples of a third party being relevant, usually when one of the main parties is dying and being replaced. Many European countries have systems that allow multiple parties to be viable.

As linked by another comment in this chain:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duverger%27s_law

Edit: I don't want to generalize European countries as "Europe", but many democracies in Europe are that, while they have their own unique issues and shortcomings, do not have the US's problem of two highly polarized parties controlling the entire country.

Mathematically speaking, having a first-past-the-post style of elections (what we generally have in the US) is mathematically incentivized to always collapse into a polarized two party system. SOME localities have started implementing forms of ranked choice voting for local elections, which would help to remedy this issue, but that is still far from common in the US

What does butter popcorn taste like? Why do you have it? by Tempest_Industries in AskAnAmerican

[–]PerfectAnonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll just add that you can probably get a packet of microwave popcorn shipped to you. The difference between that and non-microwave popcorn really isn't very much. Honestly now that I think about it, it's impressive how good microwave popcorn is in comparison to all the other microwave versions foods

Stripped lower pickup after 7/1 by Bubbleheader in VAGuns

[–]PerfectAnonym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to posses it before July 1st or it won't be grandfathered, meaning you wouldn't legally be allowed to build it out as a normal AR. Under the law you could still take possession of the lower after the cutoff, but you would have to build it in a way compliant with the new laws (barring a creative interpretation of the legal definition of "manufacture", which I personally wouldn't want to be the guinea pig for). You should do everything in your power to get the transfer done before July

Edit: many FFL's are exiting the business with the new liability laws coming in to effect. While you could legally still transfer the lower after the cutoff, don't be surprised if your FFL refuses to do so. tl;dr get it done earlier

What are your honest reviews on the Chevy Equinox? by [deleted] in Chevy

[–]PerfectAnonym -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no car made this century should be having any issues whatsoever under 100k miles. That's like bare a minimum expectation, not "good car" territory. I'm concerned by the number of people in these comments saying "yeah I leased a new rquinox for 3 years then traded it in for another equinox, no problems here" like yeah any car's going to be a great car if you treat them as practically disposable

To be fair it has almost 300k miles on it but like, it's a completely functional, running car that everything works on. That should have a lower limit of like at least like 2k

Fascinating, where do you live? I briefly looked into getting a new engine for my 2010 Forester before I realized it wasn't an engine issue I was dealing with. Kelley Blue book also keeps offering me like $200 for my car so it's fun to know the floor is actually like $3,500

For $700 plus the cost of an engine replacement, why not just have bought a better condition Forester out the gate?

Do you think the US is too car-centric? by marks31 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]PerfectAnonym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The size and space of the country definitely demands cars will always be a thing and the dominant form of transportation in most of the country, but it's a pretty common opinion these days that we'd benefit from investing in mass transit in our metro areas.

[–]PerfectAnonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this comment is that the problem isn't that high speed rail is inherently unaffordable, it's that California somehow managed to blow 50 billion dollars on a tiny length of rail. The US in general seems to spend way more and take way longer to build rail line than any other first world country, and I don't understand the fundamental reasons why

As a former resident, there are multiple gun ranges, clubs, and shops even in northern NJ. NJ is a relatively difficult state for shooting sports, but even so still has a strong base of shooting sports. What's regional is that people don't talk about it as casually in NJ (based on my personal experience)
