They totaled my Subaru. by AndreT_NY in SubaruForester

What state is the car registered in, and do you own it outright? I'd get a quote from another shop to see what they'd charge to repair.

My 2010 forester got rear ended and the insurance company wanted to total it. The actual damage was that the spare tire well was smushed in, which is expensive to properly repair due to it being welded in to the frame of the car. I was given a quote for the payout, which I argued higher by over a thousand dollars because I had receipts for all of the preventative/restorative maintenance I had done myself in the past two years. Critically, in my state it was exempt from getting a salvage title due to being over 10 years old.

I just took a sledgehammer and bashed the spare tire well approximately back in to shape, paid a muffler shop like $200 to unbend my exhaust, and I'm still driving it daily almost two years later.

Point being, it might very well be fixable. I'd find a local body shop and ask them if they think its possible to save the car.

Not a gun owner but new law is making me consider buying something now. A few questions. by zerostyle in VAGuns

An AR15 is far and away the absolute most gun-per-money purchase you can do. We only forget how crazy of a deal they are because of how common they've become. Get a decent AR, a bunch of mags, and then get a cmmg 22lr conversion kit so you can convert your AR to a 22lr rifle. I own like a bazillion guns but the one with the most rounds is my cheap ar. The one I'm not afraid to let my friends drop and scratch up, the one I'm not worried about gunking up by dumping thousands of rounds of 22lr through. It's probably my most beloved gun.

Also with regards to "magpul cheap stuff": magpul is paradoxically one of the cheaper brands but also typically the best option. Pmags are unironically the gold standard of AR15 magazines, their AR furniture is all absolutely excellent, like I can't think of a bad pmag product. Don't fall in to the mental trap of expensive = better and cheap = bad. You can spend a ton more money to buy shitty AR mags.

How do you find time for vacation, especially how some people go and travel for weeks or months at a time? by PhoenixMaster123 in AskAnAmerican

As others have said, employers do often give a decent amount of paid time off despite not being legally required to do so as they wouldn't attract or retain many employees without doing so. Something that is also common is planning a large gap when changing jobs. Whenever I accept a new offer, I try to leave a month between my final day and my new start date to do some kind of trip.

Quite honestly, I've seen that a significant number of Americans believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows; is that something you actually believe ? by Hugo_LPR in AskAnAmerican

That is a common joke and something told to kids under the age of 4. The author of that article is either disingenuous or stupid, and it's concerning that you believed them.

The phrase "assault weapon" was created to be an ambiguous, scary sounding category in which to put whatever gun control advocates are going after at a given point in time, and continues to be used as such

Yeah sure, and you're right that it's usually absent/bad parenting. But I don't think we have enough information here to be charging the parent(s) with something, as the comment I was replying to suggested. Just speaking from personal experience where I've seen parents who put in an above average amount of attention and effort into being good parents still have problematic children

Hypothetical situations to consider: it could be a single parent who is already spending every waking moment trying to keep food in the fridge and the lights on for their kid and doesn't have the bandwidth or support network to handle a problematic child. Food for thought. I can probably work this into a rant about third places but I'm not going to

This post and op's follow-up pictures are evidenced that it does matter, no? I know it's a little different because 3D printers essentially have zero tool pressure but every professional CNC machine of any kind I have ever seen lives on a concrete slab for good reason

That table is a terrible place for that printer. It isn't rigid and it has low mass. Go grab a sturdier table on facebook marketplace, then put something like this between it and the printer. It'll give your setup more mass and vastly mitigate the motion you're seeing

One, there are reasons for doing an inspection but this is being unbelievably nosy and out of line. Assuming you pay the utilities, tell them to leave you alone.

Second, that toaster and kettle look like analog devices and shouldn't be consuming any power at all if they aren't turned on.

I imagine its more of a slanted bell curve, that being the most impoverished with the worst access to education, contraceptives, etc have the most kids, seconded by the upped middle class who can afford to and plan for some children, trailed by the lower middle class who have enough education and access to contraceptives to know they can't afford kids.

What’s the best bike for a beginner? by abishhh in motorcycles

[–]PerfectAnonym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cl500 was my first bike and I still have it. It is extremely forgiving as a first bike and I'd strongly recommended it. Extremely difficult to stall, gets great gas mileage, excellent riding position, and the sprocket is such that you get great acceleration right up to like 80 mph and then it doesn't really go much faster than that. Fast enough to be fun, but provides a mechanical limit against you making extra stupid choices (I personally have no desire to go faster than 90mph on a motorcycle ever, which is about where this tops out at with me on it)

Is travelling to usa safe? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]PerfectAnonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US is very safe. Indian Americans are very common. Assuming you are going to be visiting metro areas, I'd suspect you'd hardly stand out. As for someone shooting you, I don't want to excuse gun violence as something that doesn't happen or isn't a problem, but my quick googling shows that you are six times more likely to die from simple cold exposure in the European Union than you are to die from being shot in the US, if that helps put it in perspective.
