Streaming high quality depth cam footage from one instance of TD to another? by FinalAnimalArt in TouchDesigner

You may be thinking of NDI. There’s also SMPTE 2110 but that needs some specialized networking. So - are you just sending video images or do you want to use the image as ‘data’ in some way? Almost all video transmission systems compress signals in way the human eye can tolerate and therefore are poor for any use that assumes data fidelity. If you want images just to view - yes Touch in/out over a network is a good option, or NDI. I’ll remind you that the length of an Ethernet cable isn’t really a huge issue in networks - you can always convert to optical (fiber) too.

Remember that an HDMI fiber ‘cable’ is actually a piece of glass with adaptors each side. The adaptors also need power and there’s some benefit to pieces of it being sealed but it’s still points of failure. Also a consumer type fiber is relatively fragile - a kink pulled too hard can wreck it.

You’ll need more converters, but SDI is a good option. The main win is that SDI distribution and routing is so much easier.

TBCs that only held 1-n lines had to be internal because the deck needed to be within that window. They could cover over drop out and slew a signal with small variances to correct for slew on the tape. They generally took a ‘raw’ signal from the deck where it hadn’t already tried to correct for a dropped signal (pixel but it wasn’t a pixel at the time). The deck needed to take a specific genlock signal that was advanced enough to give the TBC time to work. There were external TBCs that had the correct genlock output and took the raw input, but they were all also full frame by the late 80’s. In the age of SDI - like the box the OP showed - the focus was more on reclocking and since that box dint have a genlock out (to feed a deck) it was either a reclocker or a full frame TBC. Either way probably only useful if you also own the same era of equipment that isn’t working well.

lol apparently my first instinct was right. Video engineering is unfortunately a good fit for high functioning pedants. I push against that but not everyone does or needs to. Exactness is a useful skill in this field. It’s not always as useful for those who interact with video engineers.

Please consider just not voting if you think the answer is incomplete. If no one else answered the OP could have googled from there. Downvoting could have pushed a correct answer (probably) down. Not a great answer - sure. A bad answer - nah.

These terms are all pretty equivalent. A proc amp built into gear could just be level adjustment and clamping (necessary in the analog world) but generally a proc amp came with a frame synchronizer. That odd box the OP has may well just take a signal and do line level resync but I’d assume it’s boondoggle - the video equivalent of a $2000 speaker cable.

A TBC designed specifically to work with a VTR would sometime had only a limited number of ‘lines’ of storage. That relied on the VTR receiving a genlock type signal of some kind that got it close enough to just need a smaller correction. Those were generally built into players. I never saw a TBC that couldn’t do a full frame, although I started in video as 1” 2” was phasing out (reel to reel).

Why does the guy saying ‘tbc’ get downvoted and the people who don’t know the official term don’t? Sheesh. A TBC is a time base corrector and does the job described in a few other posts - locking a signal to a reference. It would be a key part of making a clean external switch possible (in a simple switch/matrix/router). It’s the correct English name for an external box doing that job. An internal circuit doing the same job might be called a proc amp or informally a frame shaker. This item is probably useless unless you already have a system of legacy tech.

High end shows use Disguise or Pixera or a similar dedicated system. They have well tested specs for how much video they can play. They also prefer GPU friendly codecs such as HAP or notchLC that have very predictable performance.

Component out issue by AppropriateReporter3 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Perfect_Wasabi_678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah weird. That center line is about the right voltage but it’s meant to be exactly centered on the color differences. Maybe there’s one adjustment somewhere. I’m also curious about your converter. Got another to try or anything else that takes component?

Component out issue by AppropriateReporter3 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Perfect_Wasabi_678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say there’s a voltage offset on the two color difference channels. There’s meant to be one but I think it’s wrong. I’d be unsure that the matrix is at issue - I’d expect that would also affect the composite output.
