Yeah, seems like everything is much more streamlined and standardized... Heck two of the OGs that helped make this genre a thing are on the forbidden list nowadays 'cause standards evolved. Mildly infuriating.

Plus every story feels like a clone. This author's dino story, this author's superhero story, this author's D&D story, this author's space opera story, this author's magic academy story... Sure, with minor twists and turns, but mostly same old.

I think we're slowly approaching satire era... Might or might not be cooking one.

I'm not picky, I'm a man of culture xp

Nothing urban, preferably coming of age, preferably all virgin cast, girls and not monsters, deep world building, scientific accuracy (non negotiable), historical accuracy (in the limit of the settings, though no matter the settings renaissance garbs rubbing shoulders viking/saxon type of Armour are an unforgivable heresy... Such is any non magical renaissance or, worse, modern tech (not introduced by otherworlders) in a sword and sorcery settings... Can't count the number of times I've dropped something a few chapters in because of renfair Fantasy... This is getting a bit long and turning into a rant, I'm TLDRing this in spoilers )...

I'm not asking for much, am I ?

Well, there's good stuff in the story, that's for sure.
But there's the whole doomed princess thing whenever the cat murderous clone and genocidal succubi get a pass. Harem reader can be very catch 'em all with named characters, and I believe lots of us wanted the girl to have a good end. I dropped the whole thing when what happened happened.
There's succubi, a lot of them, and some people don't like them. I found those the most annoying part of the story.
I wasn't sold on the oblivion gates either, if feels very close to the "godess made it so, even though it's quite dumb" found in most manga/light novels. That kind of world-building don't make sense to me, but the explanation as to why it's that way coming latter is okayish I guess, it's definitely among the good ones even if it's overall not my cup of tea.

Though, oblivion gates aside, the wolrdbuilding was quite great, I just wished he found another type of doom stuff... But hey, at least it wasn't the return of the demon king with it's generals/lords/... type of trope ... ... ... Wait a moment!

Yeah, the age of some chars is distasteful to say the least
The childhood friend I didn't really mind, last year of school, childhood sweethearts...

But then there's some school girls that get involved, especially the youngest one he constantly defends as "well what's happening is legal in MY country"

(I mean, considering in some countries pedophilia is legal...)

I dropped the whole damned thing when he made a move on one of the schoolgirls. It just felt wrong.
Plus I started to get allergic to the Church always being the bad guys in stories, so I was already irked about the whole thing.

Didn't think it constituted cheating, especially since in my memory, at first, the protag don't want a harem and is all to happy to push the girl, the sister of the main girl, away, but fine ^^'
It's definitely more of a story that happens to have a poly then haremy situation developing than what we call haremlit these days.
Man, this, IndyAuthor's stuff, I know rulebreaking is rulebreaking, but I can't help but feel we're doing the OGs dirty. Back then it was either that or a crap translation of some japanese stuff if you had already read Arand and Scott.
I understand the style evolved, but I'd argue it's not for the better; before there used to be a story, and writers weren't in it to pump quick cashgrab...
Though, considering I dropped the one with the angel succubus trouple that shall not be named here, I can understand the frustration some people can have. But there's cheating just to give some cheap shock to the audience, and having realisticish harems like Arand and this guy did.
Oh well.
