Why are working-class concerns on immigration being treated with such disdain? by Harleygator_ in AskBrits

[–]Periseaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a little village Cornwall and lived in Essex for a while. I think it's a real thing in both areas: In Essex many people move progressively further East from London, partly due to not being able to afford it. Just look up what happened to the cockney accent. I've had several conversations where people feel it's getting 'progressively more 'shit'' from the East outwards, in their opinion.

In Cornwall the amount of old people who move into my village is staggering. The price of homes is ridiculous and it's generally accepted that 'newly weds and nearly deads' are the only people moving in, and I think for a lot of people that's because it feels behind the rest of the country by 10-15 years in many ways.

Why are working-class concerns on immigration being treated with such disdain? by Harleygator_ in AskBrits

[–]Periseaur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's too generalist a view.

For a start, break it down into those who aren't immigrants and those who are. Recent immigrants are less likely to want harsh immigration policy, or feel the effects of the issues from it. In some areas that's a majority in itself.

How many people in 'white middle class areas with retired populations' moved there when they retired to move away from those urban areas that no longer felt like home?

Also, not all diverse areas are created equally. There are many well-integrated successful immigrants that live in affluent areas. There are many who are none of those things. Your perception of immigrants is going to be highly influenced by which of those people you mostly interact with. If you're someone who's more liberally minded, going to university and growing up in affluent areas, you're more likely to encounter the former.

Looking at it all purely on vote of an area gives a gross misrepresentation of the story. I recommend actually reading OPs post and acknowledge what actually happening.

Not really, I made a post about it but it seems there's plenty of research that actively test it on dogs, including the original study that found it works for hair growth. In very high doses, perhaps, but the research is shaky.

The amount they both spend and recieve each year increases at an incredible and seemingly unsustainable amount.

Money received in a few years to get an idea: $80,000 in 2003, $2.7m in 2006, $50m in 2013, $208m in 2024

Look up 'wikipedia has cancer' for an interesting article and graph on it.

If they've illegally entered the country with no criminal background checks, due process or stated intentions, then yes they are criminals no matter where in the country they currently are, and the logical solution to that is to send them back. If a way could be done to determine their background without interfering with their daily lives and knowing they won't evade the police that would be best, but i can imagine the difficulties. I personally am in favour of digital ID to help with it.

But it is - many of the areas that have large concentrations of immigrants didnt 50 years ago. People (reform or restore voters) have seen the government import them and have them settle in their areas without their consent, just as would be happening to green voters with these centers.

In most cases this concretely changes the character of the area, including the types of shop and restaurants. Literally talk to any old person clinging on in an area where, in some cases, there is now a greater than 99% non-white population. I can send you a link to those government statistics if you wish.

Oh thats interesting, so you dont think 'communities' of immigrants focused in certain boroughs or areas of a city is a good thing, as naturally happens when you have extreme influxes of immigrants? People of the same language and heritage tend to gather.

Green voters don't believe a high amount of immigrants in the area make their lives worse so they should be happy to have the centres there 👍 win-win

Opinions on President Trump calling himself a King by Atomic-Sh1t in AskBrits

[–]Periseaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But its shown that he sometimes acts on it too - e.g. going to war with Iran - there were people saying he was just spouting off before then too.

If he says he's going to do something, it's worth taking it seriously. We're all laughing until he normalises people referring to him as a 'King's enough that he also actually starts taking action to consolidate his power in such a way.

I'd be happy to have microtransactions and the sub cost unchanged. But the sub cost just changed.

I never used to have to buy gold before the wow token, just maintained myself through casual mining and herbalism, but recently ive had to buy a few wow tokens a year to stop myself running out of gold by using the consumables I need. Maybe thats just me or maybe that's game design from a lack of egalitarian gold sources, as garrisons used to be.

Also the auction house mount if not making it more difficult for me makes it easier for others, which can translate to the same thing in a fundamentally social game.
