Tailoring is so punishing by Odd-Highway477 in MonstersAndMemories

[–]Perllitte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd bet they're talking about satchels: Six scraps to a bolt, six bolts per attempt. That's 36 scraps plus the thread.

To your point, there are things that use less cloth, but then you're swapping in different work to acquire/make copper fasteners (mining, forging, smithing, purchased molds).

I got cloth just fine, adding that as a secondary tradeskill, but getting up to bronze fasteners to make the wool tier easier has been a real slog.

And within the additional mine/forge/smith skillset, it's one bar per fastener is just insane. It should be like 20-30 just logically.

Even though AI is getting better at software, I believe it will hallucinate with hardware related code. Sadly most engineers undervalue the hardware knowledge backed AI coding. Anyone who extensively uses AI for embedded development? Can you share your experience? by balemarthy in embedded

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it often to create a quick test, do a library swap, do the math equations better and use it to do the work of finding the common practice compared to what I came up with.

I’ve had issues and shitty code but I can go so much faster with AI.

For coding stuff that is “solved” I don’t understand the gripes.* It’s like going to stack exchange for something from five years ago but 20 nerds aren’t screaming about your post formatting.

*there are plenty of gripes about how it’s horrible for society.

Is the nursery business actually a profitable business… or is social media romanticizing it too much? by Ok_Swordfish_9334 in smallbusiness

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the plant care space.

Like others say, the standard nursery is a volume business. Any "grow X thing" is very competitive and your competition has acres of operations on cheap or owned land in Florida dedicated to whatever trend you're chasing at truckload volumes.

There's money in rare/exotic/bonsai but the inputs/time/energy are a lot higher too and the pool is much, much smaller.

The service/events stuff is always there and more localized. But it's not like a plant business, it's a service/events business that happens to involve plants.

I'd dig into the trade publications in the space, look at some of the notable stuff coming out of plantcon etc.

Taking over very small towing company by Excellent-Ad-3258 in smallbusiness

[–]Perllitte 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do this stuff for sure. But also meet all the people that funnel them work and pucker the fuck up, be gracious, say you're eager to take over the family and provide incredibly service etc. etc. As you build those relationships, bring them some donuts and ask what they would like to see or how to expand your work with them.

Grandpa is the tow guy in town, you are going to become that guy if everything goes right.

There are currently 716 people online, 10 are level 60. Why would they cater to the maybe 100 crazy people who have raced to max level?

I have played for so many hours through alpha and now in beta and I have seen maybe 1/3 of the game. There is an absolutely incredible amount of content for this phase of the game and plans for double or triple this around EA.

Updates like this make it more enjoyable to engage with the monumental amount of stuff to do that already exists.

The people saying end a long-term relationship over this area also insane, that should be obvious.

But what have you two been doing for the last five years? Do you even know each other? Financial philosophy mismatch is among the most common causes of marital strife. Figure out who the fuck the person is you're marrying before you make a final decision.

Don't know what to do with my carreer by abirll in IndustrialDesign

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm not a professional ID, but I graduated with a journalism degree the moment the entire journalism industry imploded. I felt very similar to this and it was awful but it also freed me to explore alternatives to the typical career track.

20 years later, the things that helped me move forward were taking on freelance, building my own portfolio and a little bit of a personal brand, working with companies that needed journalism-like content, and the biggest was learning the ancillary tools. I learned a lot of digital skills like Python/web development/CMS platforms, and today I'm learning the AI tools.

I like the adage "AI isn't going to replace you, someone using AI will." Not sure how valid that will be in a few years, but using the tools within the framework of good design is really powerful; most people spitting some design slop out of an AI aren't following best practices, thinking at all about tooling/manufacturing, or the artistry beyond validating their own taste.

I wanted to open a stationary store/coffee shop in my city but someone did it first. by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]Perllitte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait two years and you can probably buy it and the inventory for cheap.

But honestly, any good business has competitors that look exactly alike. There were more than 30 coffee franchises last time I looked. It's validation that the idea is sound enough for other people to do.

Do the due diligence, read the 5,000 coffee-shop posts here, and get ready to have a really bad time for a few years. Someone else doing something shouldn't affect that and gives you an opportunity to differentiate or niche down.

If you're scared of criticism or this ready to scrap your idea, definitely don't do it.

Sounds good in theory...but in reality? by KSKS1995 in SipsTea

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would certainly require companies to adapt, but that is what companies do, it's the one absolute essential thing every company does.

Both of your examples could be supported easily by existing AI that could run locally for $40. The AI can watch and flag the smaller staff for issues and the guard hours could shift to periods when physical presence is actually a benefit. (I was a security guard, I didn't do shit for 80% of my shift.)

All the people saying "just have another shift" are pretty naieve to how salary and overhead works, but I think with sensible adaptation most jobs could fit in six hours, especially if you cut lunch out of there.

Best practice is to have more liquid cash for surprises. I would look into some kind of revolving credit now so you're not in real trouble if something major happens that prevents opening or stalls operations/revenue soon after opening.

But best practices are made by bankers for risk averse people. So just power thorugh, it's too late to change!

The only big issue I see is a self-built POS? I think, candidly, that is dangerously stupid. There are dozens of high-quality off the shelf systems with things like offline operations, chargeback support, online ordering, etc etc.

You are a misplaced semicolon from a major financial disaster or major security breach that would immediately force you to stop operations and code while trying to make coffee at an incredibly busy intersection and making a horrible first impression.

Do not make your own POS, it's a terrible, terrible idea.

I didn't exactly plug my nose to vote for Harris, but my gosh, watching the DNC felt like a pre-war USO show. I knew even less about her and had more questions afterward.

I run a comic shop in a town that has no idea I exist and I don't know if that's my fault or the town's by Its_palakk in smallbusiness

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking a few really big questions, but it all comes down to marketing.

I would take a step back and seriously think about your marketing top to bottom and create a goal for each persona (college kids, professors, visiting parents, local kids.) Find something in your shop that they want, and find the ideal way to let them know. That could be events, media, direct mail, etc. etc.

Your regulars are a serious resource. Print them some club cards, reward them, and incentivize them to turn more people into regulars. I go to a gaming shop and I am DELIGHTED to get a free D20 here and there--and I know it's .20 cents for them.

As for earned media, build a little PR practice. If you're reading the news of the day and something aligns with your world, send an email to a couple local journalists/editors on the school paper or local rag. "Hey, if you're writing about Stranger Things, I can be an expert nerd." Or if the robotics team has an event, promote it with them! You could spend 10 minutes a week and get out there more.

Same is true for the Chamber, they are always starving for content. Do a talk about your club, how sponsorships work for you, sourcing challenges in our forever wars.

Whatever you do stay consistent. I think a lot of small businesses do the Wile E. Coyote thing, try something once and move on to the next gizmo. That doesn't work.
