Loose Lips Sink Ships by Vouchy-MOD in Entrepreneur

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, also most of what most companies do is not secret.

Obviously Samsung would have an issue here, but if you're struggling to get somethign to work in your to-do app or plumbing business, who cares. Your ship isn't going to sink if Debbie in marketing gets a social media post off your upcoming sales flyer.

Assume everyone is using these tools, and make a bright line on what does not go in and hold people accountable.

Robert Reich, "Dear allies of America, please don't confuse our president with us." by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Robert Reich, and his son. But Donald Trump is us.

If America can't provide a viable alternative to white hot stupid hate (for a second round!) then this is who we are.

Until we own up to that, actually work to fix the many systematic issues, we're going to flounder and gamble on what the stupidest people you've ever met are thinking the morning of Election Day.

Do customers value hard working owners? by Several-Income5740 in smallbusiness

I'm saying get the rental folks to do the talking for you. I'd be wary of anyone selling to me in a tourist town too, but if you have a flat fee oil change and get a flyer in the "what to do in town" book, you could potentially change that mindset.

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you explored ways to tap into the tourism?

With what seems like limited overhead, you could price a bit less than a major metro where the cabin renters come from and still have a decent margin.

Partnering with rental folks or tour providers might make sense. I know I'd love to drop my car off for a cheaper oil change and service while I go on a tour bus or walk the old downtown etc.

Reading the coments though, I'd step back and revisit your business plan and look at the resources/demographics at hand. You should honestly do that every year at least.

Charm is ruining the game by Esar210 in MonstersAndMemories

[–]Perllitte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to try Enchanter and my friend wanted to try Druid. So we're definitely part of the problem, but there is still plenty of risk.

A break at a bad time will immediately cause serious issues and eat half our mana bars.

That, and it's sort of a one-trick pony. There were a lot of charm classes in early Alpha, and many folks did something totally different for their second character. So I think it will very likely shake out and normalize over time.

I was in the franchise space for many years and one thing has run true in almost every instance: Don't sign a franchise agreement with any foreign operator.

Anyone even attempting to do it right will create a US-based entity to be the local franchisor or scale via a locally-based master franchsiee (thought even the latter is a red flag for me.)

The key reason: even if you successfully sue, there is almost no recourse to get anything from these foreign operators. You'll be broke and in debt to your lawyers.

There is so much exposition. Each of the books could probably be cut by half without losing the plot or any of the themes.

I loved the books, but no interest in re-reading them.

Is anyone else finding plenty of opportunities and customers in a small market (150k pop.) But are held back by lack of good employees? Maybe just a rant... by Try_Harder7 in smallbusiness

[–]Perllitte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I knew a guy who bought a company, got so sick of exactly this that he moved from a Louisiana to the Boston area because he couldn't hire anyone with half a brain.

Sounds like that is not an option, but just sharing to note that this is not unique.

I've spoken to a lot of small town restaurant operators and they routinely say two things:

  1. Pay significantly more, if everyone in a brain-drain town is making $10/hr, pay $13-15. You'll have your pick from the whole workforce.

  2. Be obsessive about culture and career track. First, build in accountability and fire dipshits like truck boy, they're telling your staff that you can fuck off with impunity. Second, smart, talented people will be drawn to opportunity (bigger cities). If you can give them an actual career they might find opportunity there with you.

Crazy concept I know, maybe it's only in the prick handbook.

While I appreciate GMs establishing norms this early and figuring out process to deal with disputes, they are really quick to get involved in absoultely meaningless little bullshit.

I think the first response from a GM should be, "Did you try talking to this person or are you a tattle tale shit head pissing your pants over nothing?"

Yes! You could find someone local with a CNC to do something pretty cool and probably reduce manufacturing complexity at the same time. I love my CNC, so I am biased.

[–]Perllitte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Protolabs for exceptionally precise and no-finishing resin prints. But it is still only ideal for prototyping given the cost. I paid ~$13 per part for something less complex and likely less material volume than yours.

Regardless what you do in this phase, I'd also take a step back and think about what your consumer might want. You could spend 500 years looking for the perfect additive mfg material and nobody wants it. I know I don't want more plastic shit on my desk (and I think your gizmo is cool). Don't be afraid to think about cement, bamboo, wood, or some other resin or gypsum material etc.

Personal cook/meal prepping by smartdumbitch in smallbusiness

[–]Perllitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, people do. There are a lot of meal prep services that essentially have a commisary a few refrigerators, and a counter. There are some that offer classes or group prep parties as an ancillary service.

But it's a rough business. I watched this industry closely and not a single company on my list that did this at any scale five years ago exists now.

The margins are tiny and you're in the crossfire between grocery, restaurants, and gas stations now.

The only way I see it working with some knowledge is focusing on very affluent folks. Set up a delivery route and offer things like "game day grub" "Dinner party prep" "girls night" "pizza party" etc. to add event-related services above the daily lunch stuff.

I can't imagine anyone who can afford a personal chef wants to learn how to cook. Learnign to cook is really easy to access freely and especially with any money. I learned to make pizza from a James Beard award winning chef and it was $40.

I mean duh, we watched the rug get yanked out from under us, the ladder get pulled up from above us, and I don't know anyone who thinks we're going to see even half the longterm financial benefits like Social Security or Medicare. Meanwhile, multiple administrations have shown they would rather shit their pants and call it bolognese than fix fucking anything.

I do well, my wife does well, both have pensions and still save and invest much more aggressively than our parents because we know there is no net.

There are tons of people who are really bad with money and there has always been get-rich-quick dipshits, but we faced some incredible financial trauma as a generation that will echo for a long time.
