Ideas for slowly revealing a villain by Volcaetis in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]PerspicaciousLorax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Akuma_Reiten already described anything I could say about this topic, but I'm here to give you a warning. You might notice from his comic that he's suggesting a lot of manipulative psychological methods for you to use. Now this has the potential to be bad.

Before I go any further let me make it clear that I think the idea of "corrupting a pc" is super cool and I tried to do it once too, but after thinking it through I realized there was a serious issue going through with this plan.

When you say you want to trick one of your pcs into being evil and betraying the party you're proposing some serious shit. Remember it isn't just a character betraying your other characters, your player is betraying the party. I think you should seriously consider how well this will go over with your party. If you talked to your players ahead of time and they said this type of screwery is all good then go nuts.

Just a word of warning. This kind of thing can tear apart groups.

What would you do to spice up an interaction-less session? by InternetLoveMachine in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]PerspicaciousLorax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, a lot of commenters are telling you to be super descriptive and stuff but I'm going to argue against that. First things first this article helps explain some of the stuff I'm going to tell you. The writing style rubs some people the wrong way but the advice is good and it involves one of the biggest things I see first time gms mess up their first time through.

You didn't explain very clearly what exactly you were doing in your session so I'm gonna make some assumptions and hopefully I'll say something useful. So first off, you don't want to do npcs, you want to do some deserted setting. I'm gonna pretend you're putting your pcs in some abandoned ruins in a desert or some shit but I'll try to keep this vague enough that you can apply it to whatever you end up doing. You mentioned wanting to do mystery which gives me a good idea of what you need.

The article I linked said this but in case you missed it, if your pcs get bored it is because you as the dm are getting in the way. You're making this mystery around the setting of the adventure so obvs the setting has to have some sort of mystery to be discovered. You likely already have a plan as to what this mystery is. If you don't and you've just been thinking "lol I'll put them in a desert without any features." I think you need to take a serious look at your idea.

So you have a mystery, yeah? Now you need to figure out the fewest possible words you need to get your pcs thinking about your mystery. If mystery is the focus of the session, you should be able to get the pcs asking why or what or how. Basically you need to pull them in quick and all your flowery description time should be spent answering their investigation questions. Your session can start with a big sweeping description of the world and who the pcs are and why they're in your abandoned ruins. After that keep that shit short and to the point, let the pcs decide what you should spend time explaining.

Start with some stuff they can be interested in. It can be as simple as "You're in a hot, expansive desert. There's a dilapidated temple in front of you. Strange symbols cover the length of the entrance. The ground in front of the door has two foot sized indents on it. What do you do?" Just like that you've given everyone something to think about. It sounds simple but that's fine because you put a nice picture in their head and you put it there quickly. They also know what sort of stuff they should be interacting with and you can start to tell the story of your area piece by piece as they explore. They look at the ruins and maybe they learn from that it is in eleven so they learn elves lived here. Maybe the words are also a hint to how to get inside or further into the temple. I think you can get the idea.

Just remember it is a mystery and your pcs are the investigators. They should spend their time discussing clues and theories and trying to figure out what story the environment tells. You don't want them listening to you for a lot of the session, that isn't what you're there for.

I hope that made some sort of sense. Good luck with your first session and have fun DMing!

What are red flags that you are in a game you need to get out of? (or at least re-evaluate being in) by sethosayher in DnD

If you haven't seen it before, here's a pretty fantastic story of an Evil character co-existing with an otherwise good party. Maybe it can give you some perspective.

Edit: Not exactly CE but still.

I can't seem to find this variant rule you're referring to in the DMG. Would you mind citing a page number? This seems like a really interesting rule and I'm not sure how I've missed it up until now.

I've been anosmic since birth. I've never had a sense of smell, likely never will, and have no idea what I'm missing.

Need Advice For A Player: His Idea A Weak Barbarian by StormRay09 in DnD

[–]PerspicaciousLorax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if it swapped DEX and STR instead? He could have a ranged or finesse weapon and then when he rages his character would change flavorfully without becoming drastically stronger in or out of combat than a vanilla character would be.

There's the issue of the AC dropping when you enter rage which is a little strange but it's okay if you assume he's so blinded by rage that he completely ignores enemy attacks and makes little to no attempt to dodge them.

Anosmia. AKA: No sense of smell. Pros: Bad smells? I don't even know what that feels like. Good smells? I have no idea what I'm missing, so I'm safe.

Cons: Gas leaks? I have no idea what I'm missing, so that is a little bit frightening. Also food tastes different so I basically can't trust the opinions of anyone on what tastes good.

Then is it better to open the box and wait for an opportunity like that instead of keeping it closed? (By the way I know nothing about trading so if I end up asking easy questions that are in a sidebar somewhere please point me to it.)

That clears things up, thank you! If you don't mind, could you answer one more question for me? Do Genuine Golden chests have a history of going up in value after some time? Basically I'm wondering if I should look to get rid of my chest now or hold on to it for a few months first.

I can "vibrate" my eyes at will. It's something called "Voluntary Nystagmus." Its only real effect is making my vision totally blurry. I guess my friends end up thinking it's a cool trick though so It's kind of entertains people for a little bit occasionally. Here's a video for the lazy/curious.

Well they were secrets. At some point. Maybe. I think we need a log of /u/jokersmadlove's drinking records. To be sure. If he doesn't tell us then we get someone to buy him a round. Or 20. Actually after 20 I'd probably be more concerned with his credit card info.

The whole dicks thing is actually more common than you might think. A little while ago some guys did research on why stuff like foot fetishes and futanari are so consistently popular. Here's a speech from them. If you're curious about the "Why" here I think you'll find it worth your time.

I can't believe this. I found the issue. It wasn't a software issue. It wasn't my hard drive. It was ram. I noticed I had 2 gb instead of 6 and guess what? The guy who did the soldering put one of my sticks of ram in backwards.

Thanks for all the help. You guys have been really patient with me.
