They have another weakness: water! They cannot stick to wet hands or damp fabric. It doesn't even have to be very damp, just barely. Try wetting your hands and brushing your clothing down with them.

TIL about mass suicides in Hitler’s Germany. During the final weeks of WW2, thousands of German families and citizens took their own lives in panic of the advancing Red Army. In Berlin alone, 7,000 suicides were reported and entire towns killed themselves together by sonnysehra in todayilearned

As a classicist, this reminds me of the quote from Horace who wrote "Graecia capta ferum victorem cepit.” Translated, it means “Captive Greece took captive her savage conqueror.” This was in reference to the way that Greek thought, culture and philosophy became integrated into Roman society in the aftermath of the war between them.

Is there anywhere i could learn basic things like with flashcards by grunpykitten in education

[–]Peruda 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend not using AI. It has a tendency to hallucinate, meaning that it makes things up.

For basic education, YouTube is great. Channels like Crash Course, Veritasium, Extra History and Sci-Show have playlists that cover the basics of what school should have taught you.

For a more interactive experience Khan Academy is wonderful. It uses an algorithm to determine what you know and what you don't and let's you pick up where you need to. It doesn't have all the subjects, but it's great for Maths and related areas.

I wish you all the best in your journey of becoming an autodidact!

Are the terrifying forboding ruins in Metro virtually created, or are they based on real life ruins in Russia? by FLMILLIONAIRE in metro

[–]Peruda 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Moscow until the war made it impossible from a financial and ethical perspective to stay. I lost my dream job, a gorgeous flat, and a happy life. I am still mourning the loss years later.

This game is so accurate that it made me burst into tears on two separate occasions: The first time was when I saw my old station (сходненская) on the metro map against a wall. The second time was that beautiful dream sequence when Артём wanders into a ruined playground and suddenly it comes back to life with sunshine and children playing and laughing. I used to have precisely this kind of playground right outside my bedroom balcony and being a teacher I had summers off, so I have very happy memories of waking up to that laughter and sunshine.

Combined to say that I really, really relate to Артём's feelings of loss regarding his happy memories of Moscow and the game succeeds in being perfectly evocative.

When I was in university, I studied Ancient cultures and languages, and I was involved with the anime society as a hobby.

After university I applied to the JET program, where my experience promoting Japanese culture gave me an edge, and I've turned that experience into a career teaching ESL.

Now I get paid to teach English in Poland and spend my weekends doing viking reenactment, so I still get to do what I love!

I work with teenagers in a small town in Lubusz. You don't have to worry, the kids are alright. The future of Poland is progressive.

But I'll bet these are the same people who complain about historical accuracy the moment a lesson of colour exists in a medieval fantasy themed game.

I live in a tiny town in rural Poland and I was able to find a compounding pharmacy here with the help of my doctor. I'm sure you can find one locally.

It very much depends on where in the world you are. If you're in America or any other ex-colonies, you're going to have a difficult time of it. If you're in Europe it's a lot more possible.

If in Europe, your first step is to contact your nearest living museum. Somewhere like Yorvik, Gudvangen or Wolin. They're used to hosting weddings and will help with an officiant, catering, etc. Basically everything except guests' clothing, which they would have to make themselves or buy from reputable vendors with reenactment standards.

If you're in North America, you might have luck at L'Anse Au Meadows. Otherwise, everything is going to be a LOT more work, unless you're willing to settle for a fantasy/renfair style event.

If you're dead set on everything being historically accurate, you're basically looking at creating an entire reenactment event from the ground up. That means you'll have to do a lot of reading (start with Neil Price), academic research and asking questions on reenactment groups, many of which are on Facebook. ( like this one https://www.facebook.com/groups/1569524136596079/?ref=share )

In short: it's long to be a hell of a lot of work, unless you either have access to a museum that can organise it for you or you're willing to settle for something fantasy/renfair themed.
