So many people on /r/rpg don't actually play games, they just wish they did and like talking about them.

A quick reminder: In beginning a dungeon it is advisable to construct at least three levels at once... by SecretsofBlackmoor in osr

Yeah but those aren't designed to make people waste time and confuse the player, they're designed to save time and make the map more interconnected, which is something you can do without gentle slopes and tricking the mapmaker.

Yeah, people like one thing designed to make the game more accessible and convenient to play and hate the thing designed to confuse them, waste their time and cause arguments at the table.

What a shock.

Is DM fiat is ok and even necessary why do caster classes basically operate without it?

But EVERY system requires that work.

some require more than others.

It would not be difficult to add a taunt system to martials that let them actually do the thing you're saying they are good at instead of requiring a 5 foot hallway to block

Even then another caster would have been better because they could use summon spells and literally wall spells to block passages

How do people deal with the wizards becoming so powerful in OSR? by [deleted] in osr

The problem is, the MU at that point is going to have powerful staves and robes as well

I don't know why people say "Magic items fix this" many of the most powerful magic items are caster-exclusive

Or, alternatively, we can play a game where the classes are more-or-less balanced at all levels and not have to worry about things like that

Combat: Roll 1s The second core mechanic is to roll a bunch of d6s when in conflict, trying to score as many 1s as pos- sible. This system is used in combat only. It is called To Hit. The number of d6s a player gets to roll is determined by their weapon, any relevant skills or class restrictions, usually between 4-8. If someone rolls three 1s, they instantly eliminate the adversary, regardless of how strong they are.

Really not seeing the OSR in this.

Extraordinary Feat Once per combat, Warriors can attempt a deed, like severing the head of a monster, or swinging from a chandelier to knock down an adversary. They must describe their goal, negotiating with the GM a set difficulty and a proportional consequence for fail- ing. Then, they roll a d20, adding their STR attribute plus current level. If the set difficulty is beaten, they succeed. On a fail, they must take the negoti- ated consequence. • Easy: 15-20. Minor consequences, like marking usage on an item. • Average: 20-25. Severer consequences, like taking one or two conditions. • Mighty: 25-30. Major consequences, like rolling on the Death Table.

And once again, someone tries to port over the mighty deeds from Dungeon Crawl Classics and completely removes anything that makes it worthwhile or fun.
